Deputy Director-General of Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), Alexander Twum-Barimah, has insisted that background checks on suspects arrested in connection with the Dunkirk cocaine seizure have found no evidence linking any of them to the security details of President John Dramani Mahama or Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Alexander Twum-Barimah’s clarification follows claims that one of the suspects, Musah Attah, alias “Kromo”, had worked with presidential security.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, September 26, the Deputy Director-General of NACOC stated, “When we arrest people, we do checks, and there was nothing that showed that any of them worked with the security details of the President or Vice President”.
“He is not a staff. He said he’s a farmer. That is the information that we have. There is nothing—we have not gotten anything to prove that he is with the presidency,” he said.
He further argued, “You will never be made to be a presidential security with the President and also be with the Vice at the same time. It doesn’t work that way. You are with one of them”.
“Do your own check whether any of the security persons with the President or even with the Vice—they are in different sections or groups—whether any of them have been picked,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Executive Director of the Crime Check Foundation, has dropped more details surrounding Musah Attah, identified as “Kromo”, one of the suspects arrested in connection with the €225 million cocaine bust in France.
The CEO of Crime Check revealed that it has now been established that Musah worked with the security detail at Jubilee House.
According to Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng, Musah Attah, alias “Kromo”, provided security for both the President and the Vice President.
He further disclosed that Musah resigned from his position at Jubilee House barely three months before he was busted in connection with the €225 million cocaine bust in France.
The CEO of Crime Check disclosed that Musah had repeatedly complained about his GH¢6,000 monthly salary, describing it as inadequate, and calling for an increase.
He further highlighted that Musah was assured that his salary would be reviewed when the economy improved; however, he resigned from his position.
Speaking on his Crime Check programme, Ibrahim Oppong Kwarteng stated, “It has been established that Musah Attah worked at the Presidency, and there have been several instances where the President and the Vice President were travelling and he was part of the security detail”.
“Information gathered has it that, at the time he was working at the Presidency, his salary was GH¢6,000, and he protested several times that the money was woefully inadequate. He was assured that when the economy got better, he would get an increase.
“But the bottom line is: How did some of these people get to such places to work? … So, he left his job at the Jubilee House because of the money,” he added.
The development follows Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, who has alleged that one of the four suspects arrested over the $261 million worth of cocaine seized in France from a shipment from Ghana is a member of the security detail of President John Mahama and Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
According to Ekow Assafuah, the suspect named Musah Atta is a security personnel who has been detailed to both President John Dramani Mahama and the Vice President.
In a Facebook post, Ekow Assafuah shared photos of the supposed suspects in proximity to the President and Vice President, and questioned how this could happen.
In the pictures, Ekow Assafuah singled out a man he claims to be Musah Atta, who was part of the security detail of the president at his swearing-in on January 7, 2025.
He also shared another picture showing a man who looks like the same person protecting the vice president.
He wrote, “US$261.45 million cocaine bust and one accused, Musah Atta, is reportedly part of the security detail of both the President and Vice President.
“How does a presidential security operative become linked to a case of this magnitude? Who granted the access, and who was watching the watchers?” he added.
