Ewulu Nii Adjei Klu, a veteran broadcaster, has fired shots at Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, after he described Teshie as the most dangerous town in Ghana.
According to Ewulu Nii Adjei Klu, A Plus is suffering from verbal diarrhoea, describing his comment as irresponsible, noting that the MP is notoriously known for speaking anyhow.
Speaking in a video shared on Facebook, the MP stated, “I am not surprised that Kwame A Plus has made such a statement because that guy is notoriously noted for speaking anyhow. He’s highly disrespectful, and he’s suffering from verbal diarrhoea”.
“He should thank God that he’s an MP because when you look at his character, the way he speaks, I don’t think morally he’s qualified to be an MP,” he stated.
The veteran journalist stressed that Teshie is generally a peaceful community where residents can move around freely at any time.
“Kwame A Plus, I’m telling you, Teshie is a very, very peaceful place. Teshie is a place you can walk about, move about 24 hours,” he insisted.
He further expressed sadness over the killing of a phone dealer identified as Dinero, which has been linked to an incident around the Teshie-Manet area, but cautioned against using the killing to characterise the entire Teshie community as dangerous.
“It is very, very unfortunate and it saddens my heart to hear that somebody has been murdered in Teshie called Dinero, this phone dealer from Seti. It is very, very unfortunate, so we shouldn’t capitalise on it and speak anyhow,” he added.
He further disputed the suggestion that the incident occurred within the main Teshie township.
The veteran journalist also alleged that none of those arrested in connection with the murder was an indigene of Teshie and claimed that some migrants to the area were responsible for criminal activities.
His comment follows A Plus describing Teshie as the most dangerous place in Ghana at the moment.
According to him, he has now upgraded Teshie from being one of the dangerous areas in Accra to what he considers a national security concern.
A Plus said attempts to compare the security situation in Teshie with the recent land dispute in Gomoa fail to capture the seriousness of the situation in Ghana’s coastal community.
The Gomoa Central MP described Teshie as a once peaceful and enviable community that has, in his view, deteriorated into what he called a “gangster’s paradise” and a haven for criminals.
He argued that some transport companies have issued security advisories to passengers and drivers travelling through the area.
The Gomoa Central MP further claimed that ride-hailing companies have held several meetings with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to discuss measures to address rising crime in Teshie.
A Plus noted that passengers can request ride-hailing services to places such as Ashaiman, Kasoa and Nima as late as 1 a.m., but securing a driver willing to travel to Teshie after 8 p.m. has reportedly become increasingly difficult.
“Kasoa is safer than Teshie. Nima is safer than Teshie. Ashaiman is safer than Teshie. That alone should tell you how serious the situation is,” A Plus said.
The Gomoa Central MP also described the situation as particularly ironic given Teshie’s concentration of security and military institutions.
According to A Plus, the area hosts the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, the Headquarters of the Southern Command, other military training facilities and a military shooting range.
Despite the presence of these major security institutions, A Plus argued that lawlessness continues to thrive in the area, raising questions about the effectiveness of security measures in one of the country’s most heavily concentrated security zones.
