The Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpor, has disclosed that more than 700 residents of Hohoe in the Volta Region are seeking shelter in classrooms after their homes were destroyed by flood waters.
According to the Hohoe MP, mud houses were among the homes worst affected.
Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpor said some residents had also lost their belongings to the floodwaters.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, 29th September, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpor stated, “With the figures we have currently, we have over seven hundred as of yesterday [Monday] living in classrooms”.
The Hohoe MP further appealed for immediate support for those displaced, many of whom he says are now relying on classrooms for temporary shelter.
“We want support immediately because our people are in a dire situation,” the MP said.
Meanwhile, over 3,000 residents have been displaced by severe flooding in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region after River Dayi overflowed its banks.
According to reports, more than 400 homes have been affected after the River overflowed its banks.
Reports suggest several communities along the river have been impacted, with Zongo reportedly among the worst-hit areas.
The information gathered suggests more than half of the community has been submerged, forcing residents to flee their homes as floodwaters spread through affected neighbourhoods.
The displaced residents have been relocated to temporary shelters, including classrooms, as authorities work to secure more suitable accommodation.
The extent of the flooding has placed considerable pressure on the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and other local authorities, leading to calls for urgent support from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders.
The Hohoe Member of Parliament Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo appealed for immediate assistance for residents affected by the disaster.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, September 28, Worlanyo Tsekpo stated, “It’s overwhelming. The MP and the MCE alone cannot, in fact, we are not able to. We are calling for support”.
Worlanyo Tsekpo, however, commended the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and security agencies for their efforts to evacuate residents from vulnerable areas and help prevent loss of lives.
The Hohoe MP noted that the situation remained fluid, adding that water levels continued to rise even after the heavy rainfall had subsided.
He further called for sustained emergency support as authorities continue efforts to protect affected communities and provide relief to displaced residents.
