Stan Dogbe revealed that the exercise was carried out under the supervision of National Security at the request of Labadi Beach Hotel.

He stressed that the exercise was different from the work of the Anti-Flood Taskforce in areas including the Kpeshie Lagoon, East Legon Boundary Road, Oyarifa and behind Mayfair Estates.

Mr Dogbe explained that Labadi Beach Hotel raised concerns about the structures affecting the safety and tranquillity of the facility, as well as, the experience of visitors.

In a Facebook post, Stan Xoese Dogbe wrote, “Let’s not get it twisted.

Friday’s action along a section of the beach front was not a Flood Mitigation Action by the government task force.

The action has nothing to do with the work of the Taskforce along the Kpeshie lagoon, East Legon Boundary Road, Oyarifa, behind Mayfair Estates, etc, that are efforts towards supporting the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources to mitigate any future floods.

To understand Friday’s action, it was carried out under the supervision of the National Security at the request of the Labadi Beach Hotel. These are structures, some permanently built (Polo Beach Club and others) on the beach in front of the hotel, and which according to the business, is adversely affecting the safety, tranquillity and reputation of the Hotel, diminishing the visitor experience and undermining the orderly management of one of Ghana’s

most important tourism destinations.

While the hotel will be able to explain, in more detail, the necessity for its action to reclaim its beach front, we must all be concerned about the serious sanitation issues that these unauthorised and unregulated commercial operations cause, in addition to the security risks.

I have seen drone shots and other short videos. Is the Labadi Beach Hotel not right in reclaiming its beach front (I am not talking about the La Pleasure Beach, please)”.

Meanwhile, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, the Member of Parliament for La has raised concern and expressed her displeasure over the exercise.

She argued that the demolition has affected people who depend on the beach for their livelihoods.

Rita Naa Odoley Sowah disclosed that the exercise was being led by the Labadi Beach Hotel and its board chairman allegeing that government officials had not been informed about the operation

Speaking at the scene, she Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, “It is the Labadi Beach Hotel, with their board chairman, who is leading this exercise. Government has no knowledge”.

“I got wind of the fact that they were going to carry out the demolition here, and I went to the authorities and they assured me that Labadi Beach Hotel would not be demolished,” she indicated.

Background

The demolition exercise begun at the La Pleasure Beach in Accra amid heavy security presence and a tense atmosphere as residents, workers and businesses try to salvage their belongings.

The the La Pleasure Beach demolition exercise is being carried out as a joint operation involving personnel from the 48 Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, alongside the Ghana Police Service.

Reports suggest several structures at the La Pleasure Beach have since been completely pulled down, while others have been partially demolished.

Meanwhile, workers and residents have been seen moving through the affected areas, clearing rubble and debris from structures with some who depend on the facility for their livelihoods, were seen crying.

The demolition follows weeks of controversy over the future of the La Pleasure Beach with management of the facility had previously rejected a directive to vacate the premises.
