Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, a Ghanaian media personality, has said the John Mahama government has made it so obvious there is a witch-hunt against opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) members.
Vim Lady argued that the ongoing investigation into Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, by EOCO clearly shows there is a political witch-hunt.
According to Afia Pokua, the activities of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) are becoming a big embarrassment to Ghana.
She questioned the way in which EOCO is handling the investigation, stressing that the development could set a worrying precedent for future governments, warning that a change in government could result in similar actions being taken against political opponents.
Afia Pokua stressed that EOCO’s activities are giving the impression that members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are being deliberately witch-hunted.
In a video shared on TikTok, Afia Pokua stated, “The rate that the EOCO is going, it is becoming a big embarrassment to Ghana, and it is becoming so obvious that we have something to hide”.
“And I am pained that if the NPP comes to power, they will do worse because the government has made it so obvious that there is a witch-hunting going on. It is becoming so obvious that the government is witch-hunting NPP people,” she added.
Afia Pokua’s comments come on the heels of attention surrounding EOCO’s investigation into Baffour Awuah, a senior partner of the law firm Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners.
Meanwhile, EOCO has stated that after Baffour Awuah surrendered himself, he was subsequently placed under arrest and is currently cooperating with investigators as the investigative process proceeds.
EOCO disclosed that the Baffour Awuah ongoing investigations has to with allegations relating to criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering, tax-related offences and other matters under investigation.
In a statement, EOCO stated, “The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) wishes to inform the public that Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Senior Partner of Sarkodie, Baffour Awuah and Partners, voluntarily surrendered himself at the premises of EOCO today at approximately 10 am to assist investigators in ongoing investigations.
