President John Dramani Mahama has told the newly sworn-in Deputy Chairpersons of the Electoral Commission (EC), Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, to apply the same standards to everyone.
Mahama urged the two deputy chairpersons to remain impartial and ensure that no political party receives preferential treatment.
According to John Mahama, the Commission must operate fairly and protect the right of Ghanaians to freely choose their leaders.
At the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, October 12, 2026, President Mahama told the two officials that their responsibility was to the Republic and its people, not any political party.
Speaking at their swearing-in ceremony, Mahama stated, “As president, I expect no preferential treatment from the Electoral Commission for myself, my party, or my government”.
He further urged the new Deputy Chairpersons to uphold electoral integrity, even when their decisions might be unpopular with other political actors.
“I expect an institution that applies the same standards to everyone and protects Ghanaians’ right to choose their leaders freely”, he added.
Mahama also called on the officials to help make electoral participation easier for all citizens, encouraging Ms Agbenyo and Dr Asamoah to use their different professional backgrounds to improve the Commission’s operations.
Also, Mahama touched on public confidence in the EC, noting that trust cannot be demanded but had to be earned through the Commission’s actions, urging officials to ensure that the Commission’s procedures were transparent, its decisions clearly explained and concerns addressed promptly.
The development follows Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Government Spokesperson, earlier disclosing that Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr Bossman Asare, has resigned.
According to Kwakye Ofosu, effective July 31, 2026, Dr Bossman Asare would no longer be the Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.
The Government Spokesperson made the announcement when he addressed the Government Accountability Series on Monday, June 15.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu further disclosed that Bossman Asare, in his resignation letter, stated that he is stepping down to return to academia and continue his work at the University of Ghana.
He also disclosed that EC’s Deputy Chairperson in charge of Operations, Samuel Tettey, has retired from his position.
According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the process to replace the two officials has already begun, with nominees forwarded to the Council of State for consideration.
He further disclosed that once the Council of State completes its review, an official announcement will be made.
Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu disclosed that Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr Bossman Asare, resigned of his own volition.
Kwakye Ofosu argued that the resignation was entirely voluntary and was carried out in accordance with established procedures.
According to Kwakye Ofosu, Dr Bossman’s resignation was not influenced by political pressure.
Speaking on Citi FM on June 15, 2026, Kwakye Ofosu stated, “First of all, there is no basis for giving any assurance because nothing of that sort has happened. The process for removing a member of the Commission is clearly spelt out by law.
“Dr Bossman Asare himself, of his own volition, wrote to the President indicating his desire to leave at the appointed date, and that is what happened,” he stated.
