President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to construct airstrips in regions without airports to facilitate emergency air travel and medical evacuations.
According to John Mahama, Western North, which currently has no operational commercial airport, will benefit from the planned infrastructure under the initiative.
Mahama argued that the proposed facilities would provide landing sites for aircraft during emergencies.
He explained that regions with existing airports would not require the additional facilities, adding that those without airports would be provided with airstrips approximately 2 kilometres in length.
President Mahama highlighted that the project will improve access to air transport during critical situations, including cases requiring urgent medical evacuation.
Speaking during a courtesy call by chiefs of the Western North Region, President Mahama stated, “We are going to provide an airstrip in every region that does not already have an airport. Sometimes there are emergencies, and sometimes medical evacuations are necessary. At the moment, some regions do not have landing sites for aircraft.
He added, “Regions that already have airports are covered, but those without airports will receive landing strips. They will be about two kilometres long and will have a small control office so that aircraft can land in the region in an emergency. Western North will be one of the beneficiaries.”
In related news, President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to invest $2 billion annually over four years under the government’s proposed $10 billion New Economy Programme to accelerate industrialisation, boost production, and create jobs.
According to Mahama, the proposed $10 billion will position Ghana as a manufacturing and logistics hub for West Africa.
Mahama highlighted that the programme would channel investment into productive sectors of the economy.
He disclosed that 50% of the funding is earmarked for agriculture and agro-processing, adding that the remaining allocation would support industry and the infrastructure that will link producers to markets.
Speaking on Thursday, October 15, 2026, when he cut the sod for the commencement of construction works on the Afienya Industrial Park, President Mahama stated, “Next year, things are going to get even faster, because we are launching the new economy programme,” he said during a tour of industrial facilities.
“The new economy programme is a programme where we invest $2 billion every year in sectors that are rich with job creation,” he added.
“This is what we talk about when we say the 24-hour economy. It is beginning to show the job creation aspect of it,” he said.
