Jacob Anaba, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), has revealed that 38 teachers at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) have been targeted after they spoke against headmaster Zakaria Abdulai, amid allegations of sexual abuse involving female students.

According to the NAGRAT President, 38 teachers at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) were asked to leave the school.

He argued that the development raised serious questions about how complaints against the headmaster had been handled.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on  October 19, the NAGRAT President stated, “As I speak to you, 38 teachers were being asked to leave the school. What was the reason?”

He alleged that the development follows work of a fact-finding committee chaired by the district director of education.

Jacob Anaba stated, “It was the wrath of the students that brought this thing into the public domain. It happened earlier before that. It happened earlier before that”.

“He knew about it. What measures did he take? He never. He allowed this thing to happen,” Mr Anaba alleged.

“You see, this Ghana belongs to all of us. We have to protect the Ghana that we all belong to,” he said.

“So, if a member of us, a teacher, does the wrong thing, he must be taken through the due course of the law. No one should be shielded. No one,” he demanded.

He further called for decisive action against the headmaster, saying, “This man should leave immediately. He can’t be a teacher again, because the profession that we decide to belong to is a noble one”.

“You have a fiduciary relationship with the student that you are handling. We may make mistakes, but not this type of mistake,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary, has revealed that the Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has denied involvement in sexual abuse allegations.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Mustapha Gbande stated, “He has denied his involvement in issues raised against him, but I will not hold brief for him”.

“We have given him an opportunity to state his case, and so I wouldn’t be his PRO.”

“He would have to go and make his own case,” he said.

Mustapha Gbande further revealed that the NDC has reversed an earlier decision asking embattled Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai to withdraw from the constituency chairmanship race.

According to Mustapha Gbande, the Deputy General Secretary, the Obuasi SHTS headmaster can now contest while investigations into sexual abuse allegations against him continue.

Mustapha Gbande, however, warned that Zakaria Abdulai winning the election would not shield the aspirant from removal.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express, Mustapha Gbande stated, “As much as we are dealing with the public interest nature of the issues, we don’t also jeopardise the rights of the person who is involved. We want to make sure that the processes are run properly.

“We do not overrun the substantive processes triggered by the minister and the GES. So we want to see how all of this plus the documentary by my brother Manasseh, how it plays out, then the party will be advised appropriately,” he said.

He can now file and proceed”.

He disclosed that the decision follows the headmaster’s appearance before the party’s Functional Executive Committee.

“Indeed, it is true. Those were preliminary directives that were taken.”

Mr Gbande said the party wanted to protect the aspirant’s rights while allowing those processes to run.

The NDC Deputy General Secretary said the party wanted to protect the aspirant’s rights while allowing those processes to run.

“But in the meantime, we think that, given the nature of the processes that have been triggered, it is only prudent and right that the party proceed with caution and follow the story keenly as it unravels.”
