He disclosed that the GES will communicate the directive to schools through regional education directors to remind teachers of the provisions in the service’s code of conduct that prohibit the practice.

The GES Director-General highlighted that students should not be asked to undertake domestic duties for teachers.

Speaking in connection with allegations of sexual abuse involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, the GES Director-General stated, “I agree with those calling for a ban on students going to teachers’ bungalows. We are going to write to schools to make sure that it doesn’t happen because in our code of conduct, in Section 3.7 (V), it is written that the students are not expected to be asked to engage in household chores, so we are going to write to the regional directors on October 23.

“And so I expect the news to get to all regional directors to remind our staff to familiarise themselves with the code of conduct and cease inviting students to do household chores because the code of conduct does not permit that. It is not acceptable.”

Also, Kofi Asare, the Executive Director of the Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has called on the GES to ban the practice of students performing domestic duties in the bungalow.

He quizzed the GES if parents send their children to school to receive an education, or to work as house helps for teachers?

In a social media post, Kofi Asare stated, “According to the Obuasi SHTS report, P, a female student, alleged that the Headmaster sexually harassed her while she was performing duties at his residence.

Following her complaint, P was reportedly relieved of the responsibility of taking food to the Headmaster’s residence, and another female student, B, was assigned the same duty.

If P was relieved of her duties because of an allegation of sexual harassment, why was another girl assigned to the same residence?

Manasseh’s report indicates that some more girls were sexually abused while performing domestic duties in the Headmaster’s bungalow.

Ghana Education Service, do parents send their children to school to receive an education, or to work as house helps for teachers?

How many more girls are currently working as house helps in teachers’ bungalows across our schools?

The earlier GES bans that practice, the better!
