Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister, has urged the public not to use the sexual misconduct allegations at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) to generalise Ghana’s second-cycle education.
According to Haruna Iddrisu, the incident should not be used to judge the standards, discipline and performance of senior high schools across the country.
He argued that secondary education in Ghana continued to uphold discipline and established standards, despite the concerns raised by the allegations.
The Education Minister further stressed that there is discipline, students and teachers who are keeping to the rules and standards across the country.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Tuesday, October 27, Haruna Iddrisu stated, “Let us not use the Obuasi incident to stereotype. There is everything good and well with secondary education in Ghana; there is discipline, students and teachers are keeping to the rules and standards across the country”.
The Education Minister’s comments come amid public concern over allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of Obuasi SHTS.
He urged the public to assess the wider secondary education sector on its overall performance rather than allowing a single case to shape perceptions of schools.
Meanwhile, Manasseh Azure Awuni, an investigative journalist, has revealed a new twist in the sexual misconduct against Zakaria Abdulai, the headmaster at the centre of the Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) scandal.
According to Manasseh Azuri, he has been receiving information which suggests that allegations against the headmaster are not new.
He disclosed that education authorities had been informed about incidents involving the headmaster during his earlier postings, particularly at Nsawam SHS, where Abdulai was made headmaster for the first time, from 2023 to 2025.
The investigative journalist revealed that he has received several calls from individuals who claimed that similar incidents had occurred at Nsawam SHS, adding that one source alleged that his exploits at Nsawam SHS were far worse than the current case being reported at Obuasi SHTS.
Manasseh alleged that one of the most serious claims involved a female student who reportedly told the headmaster that she was pregnant, adding that the headmaster allegedly gave the student money to terminate the pregnancy.
“I have been receiving call upon call,” Manasseh stated.
The investigative journalist added that information from sources linked to Twasi Senior High School and the school he referred to as “Mister One Senior High” suggested that the allegations predated the Obuasi SHTS saga.
Also, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has emphatically stated the party’s position regarding the headmaster of Obuasi Secondary Technical School (SHTS), who happens to be a member of the party.
According to the NDC, it does not endorse or cover up acts of alleged sexual misconduct.
Fifi Fiavi Kwetey maintained that law enforcement agencies must be permitted to conduct an independent investigation without any political interference.
He explained that although the headmaster was initially requested to step aside from an internal party contest, a decision that was followed by his voluntary withdrawal, the party remains resolute that it will not shield anyone from the law.
The NDC assured Ghanaians that the leadership will allow state security agencies to thoroughly probe the matter to establish the facts.
Speaking during a press briefing, the General Secretary of the opposition party, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, clarified, “We have assured that this party will not in any way interfere. We want the truth to be brought out, and on the back of the truth, the country will have clear assurance that as a party and as a government, we do not cover anybody. If he is found guilty, he will pay the highest price. If he is not guilty, we will be happy for him”.
