Speaking at the Russian University of Transport on October 27, 2026, where he received an honorary doctorate, Mahama stated, “I hope that before I leave office we will have Ghana Airways back in the air”.

Mahama also outlined investments in Ghana’s transport infrastructure, including the expansion of ports and airports, the reconstruction of major roads and the development of the railway network.

“New freight trains and the expansion of our railway network are also ongoing. And even as I speak, we are working on revamping our cherished national airline. It is my hope that before I leave office, we will have Ghana Airways back in the air,” he stated.

Also, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that President John Mahama has taken steps to restore the airline, which stopped operations more than two decades ago.

Ablakwa disclosed that a technical committee established by the President has completed its work and submitted a report to guide the revival of the national carrier.

He disclosed that Ghana Airways is expected to return to the skies in 2027, with Canada identified as a priority destination for direct flights under the government’s plan to revive Ghana’s national airline.

Ablakwa also disclosed that President Mahama had held discussions with aircraft manufacturer Boeing as part of preparations to bring Ghana Airways back into operation.

He stated, “President Mahama is passionate that the pride of Ghana, the wings of Ghana, which flew in the skies and made all of us proud until the early 2000s”.

“President Mahama has put together a technical committee. They have submitted their report. Last month, he had a good meeting with the management of Boeing, and I can confirm to you that President Mahama’s target is that next year, 2027, we should have Ghana Airways back in the skies,” he added.

Meanwhile, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has also disclosed that Ghana’s plan to establish a national airline is progressing.

Speaking at the launch of Uganda Airlines’ Accra–Entebbe service, Joseph Bukari Nikpe stated, “All of us are aware that Ghana used to have Ghana Airways, which got liquidated some years back. His Excellency the President is thinking that we cannot have beautiful airports and connect our airports to other airports without participating in that industry of aviation or flying people,” he said.

“And so very soon, the task force is almost done with their work. And very soon, we will join Uganda Airlines to be able to move our people from producing centres to the marketplaces, from the marketplaces to the factories, and from workplaces to other tourism sites, so that Africans will have that kind of free movement within our own [continent],” he added.

Ghana Airways, established in 1958, was once the country’s national airline, operating international flights before ceasing operations in 2004 after years of financial and operational difficulties.
