President John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana is no longer experiencing power outages, popularly known as dumsor.

According to John Mahama, Ghana’s electricity supply has improved following his government’s efforts to settle debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), insisting that the country is currently not experiencing power outages.

Mahama disclosed that his administration had cleared outstanding debts owed to IPPs and introduced a payment arrangement to ensure that electricity suppliers are paid promptly for power supplied to the country.

Speaking to Ghanaians in Moscow, Russia, President Mahama explained that the measures had helped restore confidence among power producers, some of whom had previously threatened to suspend electricity supply because of unpaid bills.

He disclosed that the government inherited approximately $1.7 billion in debt owed to IPPs, alongside arrears for gas supplied from the Jubilee Field and by ENI.

According to him, addressing these financial obligations was critical to stabilising the energy sector and preventing potential disruptions to electricity supply.

Mahama stated, “With regards to energy, I can report that there’s no dumsor in Ghana. Everybody has adequate power. And that’s one of the areas that has been quite dramatic in terms of its management.

“I’m happy to announce that we have cleared the IPP debt. That is, we are current. Any energy they supply today, we’re paying them,” he said.

Mahama further explained that the government had established a payment plan to manage its remaining financial commitments, with initial payments followed by subsequent settlements as the obligations fall due.

He said the arrangement had improved the government’s relationship with power producers, who were now satisfied with the payment structure.

The President maintained that Ghana currently had enough electricity to meet demand, describing the changes in the management of the energy sector as significant.

His comments come amid continued public interest in the reliability of electricity supply and the government’s efforts to address the financial challenges that have affected the energy sector.

In related news, President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed that social media platforms, particularly TikTok, have become useful tools for monitoring public concerns and identifying areas where his government needs to improve.

According to the President, he pays attention to complaints and criticisms shared by citizens online and often forwards issues concerning government performance to the relevant ministers for action.

Mahama explained that public feedback, including criticism from people with different political affiliations, provides valuable insight into the challenges facing citizens and helps him make better decisions as a leader.

He further disclosed that he does not take offence when citizens accuse his administration of heading in the wrong direction.

Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian Community in Moscow, President Mahama stated, “I don’t mind if people tell me that I’m leading the country in the wrong direction. I’m trying to do my best. Criticism helps me to do better”.

“Sometimes I go on the media, and I see something, and I call the minister and I say, ‘Hey, my friend, what is happening in your sector?'” he recounted.

“So all your TikToks and things, don’t think I don’t see them. I see them,” President Mahama said.

He further added, “That is how you solve some of these things”.

President Mahama also noted that the growing influence of new media presents an opportunity for government to receive information directly from citizens.

He added, “The new media is an advantage because it gives us information in real time”.

“The more we see the danger signs that somebody is leading us the wrong way, we must, all of us, not based on partisan leanings, all of us must say no, we’re not going in the right direction”, he said.
