First-year Ghana National College student dies during dormitory inspection

Ruby Teiko, a first-year student of Ghana National College, has died after reportedly suffering a severe asthma-related breathing crisis during a dormitory inspection at the school’s Elsie Dadzie Hall.

The circumstances surrounding her death have sparked concerns, with her family alleging that school authorities failed to provide her with immediate assistance despite repeated complaints that she was struggling to breathe.

According to the family, Ruby Teiko, who had a history of asthma, experienced breathing difficulties twice while the inspection exercise was underway.

The family claim that rather than receiving urgent medical attention, the student was instructed by the housemistress on duty and another staff member to wait until the inspection had been completed.

Her condition reportedly deteriorated shortly afterwards, causing her to collapse.

Ruby Teiko was subsequently rushed in a taxi to the Cape Coast Government Hospital for treatment.

However, she died despite the efforts to get her medical attention.

Meanwhile, the family’s account has raised questions about how the school handled the emergency and whether the student could have received assistance earlier.

Also, particular concern has been directed at the alleged instruction for Ruby to wait for the inspection to end even after she complained of difficulty breathing.

In the meantime, the circumstances leading to her death, including the school’s response to her medical emergency, have yet to be independently established.

In related news, Monde Konedu Agyemang, a 15-year-old student of Ada Senior High Technical School (ASTECH), has died after reportedly collapsing.

According to reports, the Ada SHS student died during a sporting activity organised as part of the school’s Girls’ Education Week celebration.

Reports detailed that the tragic incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, which coincided with her 15th birthday.

The late Monde Konedu Agyemang was rushed to the Sege Polyclinic but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Dr Stephen Arthur, the Ada West District Director of Education, has disclosed that the cause of death had not yet been established.

He, however, revealed that arrangements were underway for an autopsy to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the Ada West District Director of Education, Monde Konedu Agyemang enrolled at the school about three weeks before her death and had no known medical condition declared on her admission form.

Monde’s body has since been transferred to the General Hospital as police investigations continue to establish the cause of death.
