In a Facebook post on November 5, 2026, GES clarified that no student had died at the school recently and urged the public to disregard the reports.

The Ghana Education Service also criticised persons circulating the reports, blaming them for reopening the painful memories of the bereaved family and also damaging the reputation of the school’s teachers and housemistresses.

The GES Facebook post stated, “No student has passed away at Ghana National College. This particular reported demise occurred in 2018.

The general public is therefore urged to disregard the disingenuous attempts by some faceless individuals to reopen the painful wounds of the bereaved family and unjustly besmirch the reputation of the teachers/house mistresses and the school”.

The GES clarification follows reports that Ruby Teiko, a first-year student of Ghana National College, has died after reportedly suffering a severe asthma-related breathing crisis during a dormitory inspection at the school’s Elsie Dadzie Hall.

The circumstances surrounding her death have sparked concerns, with her family alleging that school authorities failed to provide her with immediate assistance despite repeated complaints that she was struggling to breathe.

According to the family, Ruby Teiko, who had a history of asthma, experienced breathing difficulties twice while the inspection exercise was underway.

The family claim that rather than receiving urgent medical attention, the student was instructed by the housemistress on duty and another staff member to wait until the inspection had been completed.

Her condition reportedly deteriorated shortly afterwards, causing her to collapse.

Ruby Teiko was subsequently rushed in a taxi to the Cape Coast Government Hospital for treatment.

However, she died despite the efforts to get her medical attention.

Meanwhile, the family’s account has raised questions about how the school handled the emergency and whether the student could have received assistance earlier.

Also, particular concern has been directed at the alleged instruction for Ruby to wait for the inspection to end even after she complained of difficulty breathing.
