“Akufo-Addo gave me a blank cheque” – New Juaben South MP

News“Akufo-Addo gave me a blank cheque” - New Juaben South MP

Michael Okyere Baafi, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, has revealed how former President Akufo-Addo gave him a blank cheque.

According to Okyere Baafi, his loyalty to Akufo-Addo earned him an appointment and also a blank cheque.

Speaking in an interview on JoyPrime, Michael Okyere Baafi stated, “So, we believe in him, you know, he has been our father for a very long time… Remember, sometimes we went to him for support when he was a lawyer. I loyally work for him. I believe in loyalty. Politics is about loyalty and commitment”.

He further disclosed that he was the first person to receive an appointment under the Akufo-Addo administration due to his loyalty and commitment.

The New Juaben South MP Added, “I think one of the privileges I had working with the president then, before he became the president… I think I was the first CEO to be appointed in Akufo-Addo’s government.

I was given my appointment on the 25th January. Other ministers had not even been appointed. He gave me a blank cheque. That’s the first time I’m saying this. He gave me a blank cheque that I should look for what I wanted. And he gave it to me”, he added.

In related news, Michael Okyere Baafi, some weeks ago, disguised himself as a Taxi driver to hear the worries of his constituents.

In a viral video shared on social media, Michael Okyere Baafi was spotted driving through his constituency and picking up residents and engaging them in a conversation.

According to Michael Okyere Baafi, this move is to get first-hand information on how his constituents are doing.

Speaking during the video, the lawmaker stated, “Most of them didn’t even recognise me. Some only realised who I was at the end of the conversation. It gives me the chance to hear their real concerns without any filters.”

“This approach helps me know their problems firsthand and lobby the government to address them immediately,” he said.

According to the lawmaker, he intends to drive the taxi for 3 days and plans to make such engagements a regular feature of his constituency work.

Meanwhile, Michael Okyere Baafi has revealed he would not seek re-election in 2028 for the New Juaben South seat.

The lawmaker alluded to the worrying state of Ghana’s politics as his main reason not to seek re-election in the 2028 elections.

Speaking in an interview on AsaasePa FM on September 2, 2025, Okyere Baafi stated, “If this is how our politics is turning, then the world is becoming scarier. That’s why some of us, and I, have said that after this term, I won’t seek re-election in 2028”.

He added, “We did all the work and campaigning, and we were confident of winning the election. But the NDC’s strategy was to buy votes. Almost every voter who wanted money was paid about GH¢500-1,000 by the NDC.

They distributed items such as hair dryers, spraying machines and other things. Given the work we put in, there was no way we should have lost. The NDC even had a table with thugs protecting the table, and not even the police could intervene”, he added.
