Sam Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, during his appearance at the Public Accounts Committee, did not mince words to criticise the Akufo-Addo government’s financial mismanagement.
The Communications Minister chides the chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee, Abena Osei-Asare, who was then a deputy minister of finance, Ken Ofori-Atta and Dr Bawumia for the high expenditure recorded at the Ghana Postal Services Corporation.
Speaking during the PAC hearing, Sam George answered a question posed to him, stating, “Mr Chairman, the answer is just simple in one word, the mismanagement of the economy by the Akufo-Addo administration, a lot of the increases. You know, Ghana Post pays a lot of Airlines for the transportation of the parcels that we send to Europe and the United States; we pay that in dollars.
When you saw the mismanagement when Ken Ofori-Atta, Abena [Osei-Asare] and co were at the finance ministry and Dr Bawumia in charge of the economic management team, you then saw….”
Abena Osei-Asare interrupted Sam George for his criticism of individuals, saying, “Respectfully, Minister, stop it right there. Just go straight to your answer and don’t be name-calling, please answer the question, I don’t think that is what we should do here.
You have been here before, I have been where you are before, let’s just go straight to the point”.
Sam George later responded, “I’m guided Chairman”, and explained, “In 2023, when the cedi depreciated, because we were paying in dollars, if you were paying a fee of $100 to an airline and the exchange rate was 8, our expenditure would have been 800 cedis, when it went to 16 in 2023, the expenditure now become 1600 cedis. So it is the Forex that loses.
I am sure that when you see the 2025 financial, even though we are doing more volumes, our expenditure will have dropped, because with a better, stronger cedi that is trading very favorable, our forex expenditure will be better”.
Some Ghanaians reacted to the video, saying, “Not surprising because she was part of that administration, and she was scared her name might be mentioned too. Morally and ethically, should she be there?”
“I’m out of here sef such a disgrace. Leaders solve problems and aren’t bent on letting their followers know this is how your past was. Leaders bring on board intellectuals to create solutions and not rant day and night about the usual problems that everyone knows”, one netizen added.
One more netizen added, “Oh, so, this minister from the previous gov’t, among the public accounts committee..Wow, no wonder she was criticising Sam George mentioning Akuffo Addo’s corrupt appointees’ names!!”.
“The funny thing is, he has every right to name-call, who was in charge of the government’s finances, as well as the deputy minister guiding and supporting any decisions made by the finance minister. If the economy were in good standing, she would have asked him to mention names sia”, one more netizen added.
