News“GAF and all its allied institutions to be upgraded into National Defence University” - Haruna Iddrisu hints

Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has announced plans to soon present a National Defence University Bill to Parliament.

According to Haruna Iddrisu, it is President John Mahama’s desire for the Ghana Armed Forces and all its allied institutions to be upgraded into a university of the National Defence University.

The Education Minister made this known at the launch of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s scholarship scheme for legislators and staff of the Parliamentary Service.

Haruna Iddrisu, speaking in a video shared on social media, stated, “I’m sure sooner rather than later, I’ll come to Parliament to introduce the National Defence University. It’s President Mahama’s decision that the Ghana Armed Forces and all its allied institutions be upgraded into a university of the National Defence University (NDU). We’ll come to Parliament to introduce a bill on that”.

The Education Minister also praised the Speaker’s academic achievements, citing that his experience makes him qualified to lead any top institution in the world, be it Yale, Princeton or Oxford.

“Everywhere in the world, Speaker Bagbin would qualify for a governor’s chair of any institution of higher learning, whether it’s Yale, Princeton, Oxford, or Cromwell—everywhere in the world, given his standing and given the enormous experience he has acquired over the period,” he added.

In related news, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has said all persons injured at the El-Wak Stadium stampede will receive a special recruitment package.

According to GAF, the November 12 stampede victims will receive free medical care at the 37 hospital until they are fully recovered and also receive a special recruitment package after recovery.

GAF, in a press statement on Monday, November 17, 2025, signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin (Ghana Navy), Acting Director General of Public Relations, also announced the resumption of its recruitment exercise in the Greater Accra Region.

According to GAF, its recruitment exercise resumes beginning Thursday, November 20, 2025.

They also announced that the screening process will be placed in eight sub-centres within five key locations in Accra.

“El-Wak Stadium – 2 centres, Nicholson Park, Burma Camp – 2 centres, Air Force Base, Burma Camp, Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Teshie – 2 centres and the Eastern Naval Command, Tema”, GAF statement detailed.

The statement further revealed that all qualified applicants will be grouped in batches of 600 and will receive notifications detailing their reporting dates and centres.

They further urged applicants to regularly check the recruitment portal for updates.

The statement further added that new officers will now oversee the recruitment process, which includes Commodore F.A. Nyarko – Director General, Human Resource, Colonel F. Kusi-Darko – Director, Manpower, and Colonel G.B. Eduah – Director, Information Technology.

This follows the six people who have died in the ongoing military recruitment at the El-Wak Stadium.

According to GAF, 28 people were taken to the 37 Military Hospital.

They further revealed that six people have died, with five in the ICU and another 12 in critical condition.
