“NPP fears going extinct by the time 2026 budget is executed” – NDC MP

News“NPP fears going extinct by the time 2026 budget is executed” – NDC MP

Kofi Benteh Afful, the NDC Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, has mocked the NPP Minority in Parliament as the One Corner Minority.

According to the NDC MP, the minority are failing to see the distinction between economic growth and development.

He asserted that the NPP minority fears that when the 2026 budget is executed, they will become extinct.

Kofi Benteh Afful further mocked the NPP minority, saying that their best score in the December 2024 election was 87 out of 276.

Speaking on the floor of parliament, Kofi Benteh Afful stated, “Before I became a parliamentarian, I heard that this House had two sides, your left-hand side and your right-hand side. But ever since I came here, I’ve seen a median. However, what I have seen are four ‘connects,’ one of which is occupied by the NPP, which was in the previous government.”

“Our friends in one corner are trying to tell us that they have forgotten the basic economics of the distinction between economic growth and economic development. If this is what you did, then I’m not surprised that you went into the examination in December 2024, and your best score was 87 out of 276.”

“We would not want to be like you. We are treading cautiously. The Minister for Finance is not only a finance expert, he is also an accountant and has taught us how to prudently manage an economy,” he said.

“Today, we are presenting a budget that is not only seeking to grow the economy but to develop it. Even though we have stepped up to grow the economy by 4.8%, Mr Speaker, in this 4.8%, 800,000 jobs are going to be created to solve some of the problems they left behind,” he said.

The MP added, “That is why he is not running his mouth. He doesn’t want to run away. He doesn’t want to be a fugitive of justice. He wants to be able to come back home and attend the funerals of relatives.”

“Their only fear is that by the time the programmes in this budget have been executed, they will become extinct.”

The NDC in the ninth parliament of Ghana has a two-thirds majority in Parliament with 184 out of 275 seats, along with four independent MPs, while the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds 86 seats.

Also, Patrick Yaw Boamah, the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, has described the planned Accra-Kumasi expressway as unnecessary and a misplaced priority.

The lawmaker lambasted the Mahama government for failing to add to the existing road project, but rather seeking to undertake what he describes as a far-fetched project that lacks funding.

Speaking on the floor of parliament, Patrick Yaw Boamah stated, “Mr Speaker, if you look at the cover page of this year’s budget, you can see a clear Photoshop of a certain express road that the minister spoke about.

Mr Speaker, what is the crime of the people of this country, especially most of us who travel that road to our villages, especially from Accra to Paga and to Bawku, for eight years from 2009 to 2016, not a single kilometre was added by the NDC government.

You come into government instead of prioritising the completion of the dualization of the Accra-Kumasi road, you are telling us that you are going to construct an express road with what funds?”

The lawmaker added, “It is a completely misplaced priority. What the Ghanaian want to see is the completion of the dualization project that was started by the Akufo-Addo Kufuor administration, then you can look at that. Even the financial muscle does not help you, how are you going to construct this?”.

He further added, “In 2025, only, death on the Accra-Kumasi highway is 525 for the Eastern Region, Ashanti 570, and Greater Accra 331. A reasonable government will take the completion of the dualization program as a priority, complete it and save Ghanaian lives rather than taking another step of constructing an expressway way which I believe is not a priority for Ghanaians”.
