President John Mahama, during the commissioning of 40 armoured vehicles for the Police Service in Accra on December 4, personally drove one of the vehicles.
In a viral video shared on social media, President Mahama was spotted wearing a helmet, entering and driving one of the armoured cars.
The ceremony was held at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
The Ghana Police Service received 40 new armoured vehicles to strengthen its operational capabilities.
President John Mahama personally handed over the 40 new armoured vehicles to the Police Service.
The ceremony was attended by other government officials and police leadership.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu, speaking at the event, assured that the vehicles would be strategically deployed and properly maintained.
He added, “We wish to sincerely express our profound gratitude to the government for thinking about us and prioritising our welfare. Our assurance to you is that the vehicles will be well-maintained and strategically deployed to achieve the intended objectives.”
John Mahama also announced that the Ghana Police Service will receive ten covert operations vehicles and drones.
Speaking at the commissioning of 40 armoured vehicles for the Police Service in Accra on December 4, John Mahama stated, “A police detachment that will be trained how to use drones for urban surveillance and information gathering in any theatres that you are involved in”.
“You will also get 10 Covert operational vehicles that I have been cautioned not to talk about. It’s only you who will know you have them. These 40 vehicles are just the first batch of what you are receiving. By the end of this month, you’ll receive two tow trucks… and many more will follow,” he said.
President Mahama further commended the IGP, saying, “Let me begin by commending the IGP, the Police Management Board, and all the officers and rank-and-file of the Ghana Police Service. You are doing a good job… Our highways are getting safer because you’ve taken on the highway robbers and you have dealt with them.”
“In the past, there were many unsolved murders. I’m happy to note that recently… with good police intelligence, you’ve been able to bring the suspects to book,” he said.
He added, “Many times, we send our police… into assignments without giving them the appropriate safety equipment. That is going to be a thing of the past,” he assured.
Mahama further highlighted that his government committed to preventing needless deaths in the line of duty.
“Many men have died in the line of duty just because they were not properly equipped for the assignments that we asked them to do. Government will ensure that that becomes a thing of the past,” he said.
