Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister, has announced his ministry will launch a National Value Added Tax (VAT) “Reward Scheme” to boost compliance.
The Finance Minister made this announcement when he engaged Officers at the Large Taxpayer Office at the VAT House in Accra.
The Finance Ministry, in its communication, stated, “The initiative was announced after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson engaged the team at the Large Taxpayer Office at the VAT House in Accra, where he reaffirmed his commitment to strengthen their work and remove obstacles that hinder revenue mobilisation.
Under the new scheme, VAT receipts collected by tax-compliant citizens will be entered into national draws, giving participants the chance to win a range of attractive rewards.
The programme is expected to encourage more Ghanaians to demand receipts, thereby reducing leakages in the VAT chain and improving overall revenue performance.
The VAT Reward Scheme forms part of a package of tax administration reforms scheduled to begin next year.
These include the rollout of a redesigned VAT system and the deployment of fiscal electronic devices to enhance compliance, transparency, and data accuracy.
According to Dr. Ato Forson, the combined reforms will help “build a modern, fair, and efficient revenue system” capable of supporting the government’s broader “agenda of Resetting for Growth, Jobs, and Economic Transformation”.
Meanwhile, some Ghanaians have reacted to the news, saying, “This better be good. I mean like worth much more than just paying the right tax amount annually”.
“They don’t have to award us! They should just reduce it and see how many businesses will comply”, a netizen added.
One more X user wrote, “The system is working .. better than E levy and some nuisance tax like bet taxing.. After collecting those taxes, Fuma. Please keep the good works up, that is where you’ll keep those looters in opposition for 32 years”.
“Good initiative, but a country with cronyism as a branch of government it’s always some way”, a netizen added.
In related news, Isaac Adongo, the Chairman of the Finance Committee, has said that if the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, stays on his current path, he does not see the next president going beyond him.
According to Isaac Adongo, Ato Forson will win the next election for the NDC if he keeps focus as he had started.
Speaking on GHOne on Isaac Adongo explained, “Privately, I told him (Ato Forson). I said if you continue on the path that you are continuing, I don’t see the next president beyond you. I told him personally because to has done the things that he has done in this short period, and don’t forget that he has the full backing of His Excellency [Mahama].
“If you have a finance minister who doesn’t have the backing of the president, he will be a failure because there are certain difficult decisions that you take that even your colleagues are not comfortable with, but that is what is required to swallow the bitter pill and heal”.
He continued, “I’m not by this saying that Ato Forson wants to contest for president, but it is just to let him understand how I situate the work that he has done. He’s a young man; I don’t think he may even be having that contemplation.
But just to let him understand that we are sitting back, we are impressed with the work that he’s done and that he should keep the focus. And if he keeps the focus, he will win the next election for the NDC. There’s no two ways about that. And I do believe that his biggest strength was placing Ghana first,” he explained.
