The former Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya Adwoa Safo has told the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to ignore claims that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia caused the economic mismanagement under the party’s administration.
Adwoa Safo highlighted that Dr Bawumia was not the finance minister, arguing that the former vice president was only a driver’s mate.
According to Adwoa Safo, when some NPP members of parliament called for the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, over his poor management of the economy, was he not allowed to destroy the economy before stepping down?
Adwoa Safo further fired critics of the former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Speaking to NPP delegates, a highly vociferous Adwoa Safo questioned Dr Bawumia’s critics whether he was the Finance Minister.
The former Gender Minister quizzed critics on why they blame Dr Mahamudu Bawumia when he was not the Finance Minister.
Adwoa Safo, speaking to NPP delegates, stated, “Was Dr Mahamudu Bawumia the Finance Minister? We were in government when some of our MPs questioned how the economy was being managed and called for the removal of our Finance Minister. Did they allow him to step aside? Didn’t he destroy the economy before he was sent home? So why blame Dr Bawumia?”.
Adwoa Safo further declared Dr Bawumia was not the cause of the NPP’s 2024 election defeat, arguing that Ghanaians despise the NPP because when they spoke, they were not listening.
She added, “If you are a mate and your master is driving a car, can you overrule the driver, even if the driver is not performing well? We did our thing badly. When people spoke, we didn’t listen; we even placed our hands in pensioners’ funds. There are a lot of things that caused the 2024 elections’ defeat; it is not one individual. Dr Bawumia did not cause the NPP defeat; Ghanaians despise us because when they spoke, we were not listening”.
It may be recalled that back in November 2022, Ninety-eight(98) New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament reignited calls for Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to be axed.
They have threatened to boycott the upcoming 2023 budget presentation and all Finance Ministry business if the president refuses to sack Ken Ofori-Atta immediately.
Earlier, over 80 MPs held a press conference on Tuesday, October 25, to demand that Ken Ofori-Atta and Charles Adu Boahen be sacked from their respective roles, which led to a meeting with President Akufo-Addo.
He requested that the Finance Minister be allowed to conclude the IMF talks and present the 2023 budget statement.
