President John Dramani Mahama has said he is glad that Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s Bawku mediation process has concluded.
Speaking during the presentation of the mediation report at the Jubilee House on December 16, 2025, President Mahama pledged that his government will, within 24 hours, release their position on the Bawku Mediation Report.
John Mahama stated, “I’m pleased that this mediation has come to an end, and that he has presented a report”.
“I can assure him that the government will look at this report, and within the next 24 hours, the government will issue a statement on its definitive position on the report.”
He added, “But it’s my hope that the National Peace Council, the House of Chiefs, Otumfuo himself, and all the religious bodies would go the next step of continuing the engagement between the Nayiri and the Bawku Naaba to ensure that we are able to bring reconciliation between the two groups”.
Meanwhile, the Asantehene has said the Bawku mediation report should bind on all parties.
He described the Bawku Peace Mediation process as a fact-finding effort aimed solely at restoring lasting peace.
The Asantehene stated, “We present the report for your kind consideration, whatever action you and your government consider appropriate,” the Asantehene said.
“There’s nothing more grievous than the peace and security of the land. Like I said, it was a mediation. It wasn’t an arbitration, and I’m not here to say that this one was wrong or this one was right. I’ll present the facts as they are, and that’s what it should be, binding on all of us.”
He added, “At the commencement of the hostilities, the government of former President Akufo-Addo issued a statement on the legal position.
“Both President Akufo-Addo and now President John Dramani Mahama came to the conclusion that historically, governments have intervened without lasting peace, and that court pronouncements have not been respected by either side if they went against them.”
“Both governments took the position that I should define a solution to the Bawku situation using mediation, and that my recommendations or conclusions shall be enforced by both governments at all times as a traditional solution to the problem,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Interior has announced a renewed curfew for Bawku Municipality, effective Monday, December 15, before the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, submitted his report to President Mahama.
According to the Ministry of the Interior, the curfew will run from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in the area.
Authorities have urged chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, and residents to exercise restraint and channel their energies through non-violent means to ensure stability.
The complete ban placed on the carrying of arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons within Bawku and its environs remains in force, with violators subject to arrest and prosecution.
