Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, has jabbed the Minister of Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, in Parliament over the allocation of additional GH¢4 billion to his office.
On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, during the proceedings of the Committee on Security and Intelligence on the 2026 Annual Budget Estimates of the National Security Council, the minority leader questioned the process and timing surrounding the presentation.
He stressed that the minority was not given prior notice nor supplied with copies of what he described as a newly printed “addendum”.
According to Afenyo-Markin, such actions undermined consultation and parliamentary procedure, principles.
He asserted that the Interior Minister himself had previously championed while in opposition, but today is quiet because he has been given a GH¢4 billion allocation to his office for additional responsibility for national security matters.
“When the Minister of Interior, with additional responsibility for national security, entered the chamber, he came with all his might. Suddenly, another paper was printed and brought in. We have not been given copies,” he stated.
“Mr Speaker, the amount in the report … when you cannot provide for Women’s bank…I was only signalling them that the amount that they have given to the Minister of Interior with additional responsibility…. Mr Speaker, he is not paying attention to me, with all the provocation, he has decided not to respond; he has to respond.
He added, “Mr Speaker, he can’t be quiet today, honourable Muntaka is not known for being quiet, he can’t be quiet today. Honourable is not known for being quiet. You have taken 4 billion so you’re quiet. Money does not like noise … your mouth is full, so you don’t want to talk”.
“These things must stop. If you want to run a one-sided Parliament, say so, and the civil society organisations will come after you,” he cautioned.
Bernard Ahiafor, who was the presiding speaker, intervened at several points, citing that the report had not yet been formally laid and cautioning members against debating.
However, the Chairman of the Committee on Security and Intelligence later presented the report on the 2026 National Security Council budget estimates.
The Speaker then announced it and laid it, and made it available for distribution to Members of Parliament.
In related news, Kennedy Agyapong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful, has publicly told the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, to step down as minority leader.
According to Kennedy Agyapong, there is internal jostling to oust Afenyo-Markin as minority leader.
He revealed that some persons within the NPP believe the Minority Leader should come from the Eastern Region or the Ashanti Region.
Kennedy Agyapong further added that he has already told the minority leader to leave the position for them.
Speaking in an interview on UTV on December 15, Kennedy Agyapong stated, “He is well-to-do, so he should leave the position for those who are fighting him”.
“Those criticising Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s leadership want positions. Some people are arguing that the Minority Leader should come from the Eastern Region or the Ashanti Region. I have told him to leave the position for them, and I have personally called him to tell him to step aside.”
“If it were in the olden days, I would have mentioned all those seeking his position’s names, but now I won’t. He can eat for the rest of his life, and it shouldn’t look like being an MP is the only way to survive,” Agyapong stated.
