Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Minister of Transport and Member of Parliament for Saboba, has revealed that a new Sea transport service will start from February 2026.

The Transport Minister announced that an investor has secured two large vessels to begin marine transport operations along the West African coast.

According to the Transport Minister, the transport operations along the West African coast will link Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview on The Point of View on Channel One TV on Monday, December 22, Joseph Bukari Nikpe announced, “Currently, I am happy as a Minister to say that we have had an investor who has brought in two ships, bigger vessels that will soon start operations from the coast through to Nigeria. He will now be taking passengers and cargo from Ghana through Togo, Benin to Nigeria.”

“We believe that will ease the congestion on the Volta route to Benin. It is going to take from Accra through Lomé, through Cotonou, and then finally by sea—goods and human beings,” he stated.

The Minister revealed that the preparations for the new Sea transport service are at an advanced stage.

He added, “If you have your vehicle, you wouldn’t want to spend any time on the roads”.

“By February 2026, it should start operations because it is far gone,” the Minister said.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama had earlier disclosed that a private investor is set to launch a ferry service in Tema.

According to John Mahama, the ferry is designed to serve countries along the West African coast by transporting vehicles, passengers, and goods between Ghana and other nations in the region.

John Mahama further assured that his government will provide comprehensive support to ensure the success of the project.

Speaking at the commissioning of Phases 1 and 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project on Thursday, November 14, John Mahama revealed, “The private sector maritime operator has just recently approached us to establish a ferry service to countries on the West African coast to be located in Tema.

The ferries will carry vehicles, passengers, and goods between Ghana and other West African states,” he stated.

He added, “We will give him all the encouragement to be able to establish this service so that we can increase the exchange of goods among our people”.
