“Abrego Garcia cannot be deported to Ghana” – Ablakwa tells US authorities

News“Abrego Garcia cannot be deported to Ghana” – Ablakwa tells US authorities

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has shut down reports suggesting the United States plans to deport a Salvadoran national, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, to Ghana.

According to Ablakwa, Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia.

He boldly added that Ghana’s stand has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities.

In a social media post, Ablakwa wrote, “Ghana is not accepting Abrego Garcia.

He cannot be deported to Ghana.

This has been directly and unambiguously conveyed to US authorities”.

He further added, “In my interactions with US officials, I made clear that our understanding to accept a limited number of non-criminal West Africans, purely on the grounds of African solidarity and humanitarian principles, would not be expanded.

Ghana strongly objects to these misleading media reports”.

Ablakwa’s post comes after the Department of Homeland Security said it now plans to deport Kilmar Abrego Garcia to Ghana.

Reports had claimed the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had informed Abrego Garcia’s attorneys of its intention to deport him to Ghana.

A U.S. court filing, DHS had previously considered deporting Abrego Garcia to Eswatini and Uganda.

After he was wrongfully deported to El Salvador, and later returned to the United States.

The information gathered suggests Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran native, was living in Maryland with his wife and children and was deported in March to El Salvador’s CECOT mega-prison.

He was deported despite a 2019 court order barring his removal to that country due to credible fears of persecution.

The deportation was justified on allegations that he was a member of the criminal gang MS-13; however, his family and lawyers have consistently denied this allegation.

He was later returned to the U.S. in June to face human smuggling charges in Tennessee, where he pleaded not guilty.

After being released into his brother’s custody pending trial, Abrego Garcia was re-arrested by immigration authorities, who again initiated deportation proceedings.

Meanwhile, an immigration judge recently denied a proposition by his attorneys to reopen his case.
