The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has told disgruntled party members that President John Mahama cannot appoint everyone.
According to Asiedu Nketia, appointments under the current Mahama administration are limited; however urged party supporters who are yet to receive appointments to remain calm and exercise patience.
The NDC National Chairman further stressed that it is practically impossible to appoint all deserving members at the same time, citing the constitutional restrictions placed on the president’s appointment.
Asiedu Nketia further urged party members to avoid resorting to anger or public criticism and to use internal channels to seek redress for their grievances.
Speaking during his Thank You Tour at Winneba in the Effutu Constituency on Thursday, February 12, Asiedu Nketia, stated, “I am aware that some of you are unhappy because you did not get to be appointed to any position upon our return to power. This is understandable. It is the reason why I am embarking on this ‘Thank You Tour’, to explain issues for your understanding.
“The challenge is that, given the number of appointments that the constitution permits President Mahama to make, not all members of the NDC can be taken care of. So be patient. There is no need to be angry with the party.”
“You have elected a good president who is doing a good job. Everyone acknowledges this fact, including some members of the opposition. So, I urge you to be patient with the government. If you have any concerns that have not been addressed yet. There is time for everything. Your concerns will be addressed. All you need to do is to channel them through the right quarters and it will be resolved,” he assured.
Johnson Asiedu Nketia comes on the heels of some irate Tema Central NDC executives who have forcefully locked up the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in Tema.
Reports suggest the NDC executives locked up the Tema NHIS office over what they describe as unfair and exclusionary appointments.
In a viral video shared, the irate NDC executives drove out all staff at the NHIS office and proceeded to lock up the main gate.
Benjamin Ims Djakumah, the Constituency Chairman, led the NDC executives into locking up the office over what he described as dissatisfaction over recent appointments to the NHIS and other public institutions in Tema.
He revealed that appointments were made without consultation with several qualified party members, being overlooked.
According to Chairman Djakumah, the leadership of the NDC in the constituency is unhappy over the sidelining of grassroots executives after they work to regain power for the party.
Henry Davidson Ayeh, the Constituency Secretary, supported the protest, adding that the grassroots feel they have just been taken for granted.
The Constituency Organiser also highlighted that the sacrifices made by party faithful in Tema Central must be acknowledged.
Meanwhile, Augustus Nana Kwasi Andrews, the Ashanti Regional leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) some months ago revealed he is under a lot of pressure, as the party’s grassroots are demanding jobs.
According to the Ashanti Regional NDC Chairman, the NDC grassroots are calling for more, demanding their own share of appointments and employment opportunities.
Augustus Nana Kwasi Andrews asserted that the NDC grassroots played a critical role in securing the NDC’s victory in the 2024 elections.
Speaking to journalists in Kumasi on December 8, the NDC Ashanti Regional Chairman stated, “Looking at the campaign that we did last election (2024), they did very well. They used their energy, their money, their resources, everything. And you know that when you work for somebody, and the person wins power, you have to compensate the person. And there’s a lot of pressure on me. So everybody is demanding.
He further urged the NDC grassroots to remain calm, adding that not everybody will get an appointment.
He added, “The grassroots are calling for more, and everybody needs their own share. That’s why I’m asking my branches to remain calm. They should have hope in H.E. President John Dramani Mahama”.
“We know that not everybody will get, but the few that will get an appointment, we have to bring it down so that everybody can enjoy their sweat.”
