Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu has been appointed as Ghana’s High Commissioner-Designate to Nigeria by President John Dramani Mahama.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 1, 2026.
In a post shared by Minister of Foreign Affairs and regional integration Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on X on March 1, 2026, read, “Congratulations, Baba Sadiq, on your well-deserved appointment by President Mahama as High Commissioner designate to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
I have no doubt you will hold aloft Ghana’s flag and make the youth of our continent proud”.
Baba Sadip, as High Commissioner-Designate wil spearhead initiatives that enhance trade, cultural exchange and diplomatic cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
His appointment follows President John Mahama’s recall of the previous High Commissioner, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, popularly known as Baba Jamal.
In related news, Baba Jamal, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso East, has explained why he is leaving his job as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria to contest in the Ayawaso by-election.
According to Baba Jamal, the benefits he gets as a High Commissioner to Nigeria are three times those of an MP,
He stressed that he is not motivated by material things but motivated by human service.
Speaking to some voters, Baba Jamal stated, “The benefits and conditions of service I get as a high commissioner to Nigeria are three times that of an MP. In fact, I have been an MP, so I know what I am talking about. But I have decided to leave all and come and serve my people, so the question everybody should ask is what is my motivation.
I’m not motivated by material things; I’m motivated by human service. My colleague in Brazil called me to say that he heard I was going back to Nima. He said the salary is good oo, this is our condition, you want to leave it? I said yes, I am leaving it because I am not motivated by material things. If it is about money, I will stay in Nigeria”
Baba Jamal further added, “Look at all these lageese. Every day I spend out there, I’m giving $547 my telephone allowance is $600, have you seen an Ambassador who has spent two to three years and come back as a poor person unless he is a fool. At the end of the month, all that I buy from my $12,000 is food”.
Meanwhile, Pressure Group Democracy Hub has filed a lawsuit at the High Court in Accra seeking to halt the upcoming Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election.
According to the Democracy Hub, NDC’s Ayawaso East primaries were characterised by widespread vote buying, inducement, and monetisation, which they argued undermines democratic principles enshrined in Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The Democracy Hub lawsuit stems from the alleged vote-buying during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries held on February 7, 2026.
The pressure group lists NDC as the first defendant, with the Electoral Commission (EC) as the second, and the Attorney-General as the third.
Democracy Hub is seeking the High Court to quash the EC’s recognition of Baba Jamal as the NDC candidate and to restrain the Commission from accepting or acting on his nomination, calling for a fresh primary to be conducted in accordance with democratic principles.
