“Your conclusion is lousy” – Dafeamekpor hits back at Ntim Fordjour over enlistment age limit

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, has hit back at Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, following his remarks on the enlistment age limit.

Rev Ntim Fordjour labelled the two NDC MPs, Sam George and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, who called for a review in the age restriction for military enlistment, as an attempt to allow average NDC foot soldiers into the military.

According to him, the NPP will resist every attempt by the NDC to load their overage foot soldiers into the Ghana Armed Forces.

In a social media post, Rev Ntim Fordjour wrote, “Hon Sam George and Hon Dafeamekpor’s call for unqualified overage NDC foot soldiers into the military is a misconceived and misguided populist agenda.

We will resist every attempt by NDC to load their overage foot soldiers into the Ghana Armed Forces. Ghana Armed Forces is not a dumping ground for overage NDC foot soldiers”.

Ntim Fordjour added, “NDC Cabinet Ministers and Parliamentary Leadership must be made to know that it is extremely backward and dangerous to force unqualified people into the military as a reward for party patronage”.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor labelled Rev. Ntim Fordjuor’s conclusion on the matter as a lousy one without engaging the issues.

In a social media post, he wrote, “Hon. Rev. Ntim Fordjuor, your conclusion in this matter is a lousy one without engaging the issues”.

He cited that the former NPP government also increased the Maximum Service years from 25 years to 30 years.  

He added, “But let me ask you this: as the Ranking Member on the Defence & Interior Committee of Parliament now and as a Deputy Minister of State just last year, when your Npp Govt increased the Maximum Service years for the Other Ranks (Junior Officers) of the Ghana Armed Forces from 25yrs to 30yrs such that now they retire at 60yrs instead of 55yrs, was it to allow average Npp foot Soldiers to remain in the Army? Don’t be so unguarded.

Point is that I have meticulously provided data on how 20 different Armed Forces in other jurisdictions have transitioned and yet maintained military strength”.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor further emphasised, “I am only asking that the NPP Policy of having to extend the upper ceiling for years of service for Other Ranks from 25 years to 30 years be also applied to enlarge the ceiling for entry from 25 years to 30 years or more, subject to medical fitness”.

The Majority whip added, “I insist, subject to a medical fitness test though, that what a 25-year-old can do in training at Bundase, a medically fit 26-year-old can do the same or better at Achiase.

I maintain, again subject to a medical fitness clearance, that we have no regulatory or statutory justifications to tell a 26 or a 30-year-old Ghanaian SHS or Technical School Graduate that s/he cannot join the Ghana Armed Forces to perform non-combatant duties like a Cook, Haberdasher, Driver, Bandsman, Mechanic, etc.

So to Hon Ntim Fordjuor and the NPP, it is better to keep 56-60-year-olds in the Army than it is to intake 26-30yrs as Soldiers”.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) announced the commencement of the 2025 enlistment and recruitment across all 16 regional capitals of the country.

The recruitment process has been officially published in state-owned newspapers, including the Daily Graphic and Ghanaian Times.

According to the GAF, the decentralised recruitment is aimed at offering equal opportunity to all eligible applicants, regardless of location.

Rev John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, has boldly told Sam George and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor that the Ghana Armed Forces is not a dumping ground for overage NDC foot soldiers.

The NPP MP’s remarks follow, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, who revealed his phone has been buzzing with NDC foot soldiers calling, not happy with the maximum age limit for enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces.

In a social media post on his X page on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Dafeamekpor wrote, “I have had many calls from our Party foot soldiers regarding the Army Recruitment and max age for prospective applicants. They aren’t happy”.

Dafeamekpor further went on to make a long reference to the maximum age limits for military recruitment in other countries around the world.

The South Dayi MP cited examples from African countries such as Benin and the Ivory Coast, where the maximum age limit for prospective applicants is 35 years.

He called for the same approach to be considered in Ghana and emphasised that the recruitment must come with clear conditions and defined roles for individuals within that age group.

“So, in Ghana, we can extend our age limit to say 35 years or even 40 years, depending on the medical fitness and non-combatant roles. We need new ways of doing things,” he stated.

Also, Sam Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has said a maximum enlistment age of 35 years would serve our young people better.

According to Sam George, there are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation.

Sam George called for the re-examination of the maximum age for enlistment into Ghana’s military services.

In a post on X, Sam George wrote, “I honestly believe it is time for our beloved Nation to re-examine the maximum age for enlistment into our military services.

There are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation. We must not deny them this opportunity simply because of their age.

There is a precedence across the world. I believe an upper limit of 35 years would serve our young people better. Let’s nurture their dreams and not kill it.

For God and Country”, he added.

However, in a sharp rebuttal, Rev Ntim Fordjour labelled the two NDC MPs’ calls for a review age restriction for military enlistment as an attempt to allow average NDC foot soldiers into the military.

According to him, the NPP will resist every attempt by the NDC to load their overage foot soldiers into the Ghana Armed Forces.

In a social media post, Rev Ntim Fordjour wrote, “Hon Sam George and Hon Dafeamekpor’s call for unqualified overage NDC foot soldiers into the military is a misconceived and misguided populist agenda.

Ntim Fordjour added, “NDC Cabinet Ministers and Parliamentary Leadership must be made to know that it is extremely backward and dangerous to force unqualified people into the military as a reward for party patronage”.

He further cautioned the NDC government to stop interfering in the professional recruitment process of GAF.

“Stop the undue interference in the creditable and professional recruitment process underway by the Ghana Armed Forces”, he concluded.

YEA denies allegations of 10-month salary delays

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA), in a statement, has denied allegations of owing some 300 of its staff 10-month salary delays.

Suadique Musah, Director of Corporate Affairs, in a statement, clarified that all legitimate employees on YEA YEA-approved payroll have been paid from February to September 2025.

The statement added that Chief Executive Officer Malik Basintale inherited the existing payroll approved by the YEA Board when he assumed office in February 2025, adding that no verified employee has been excluded from salary payments.

The YEA statement read, “The attention of the Management of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has been drawn to reports circulating in the media alleging that about 300 staff of the Agency across the country have not been paid their salaries for ten (10) months. The Agency wishes to set the record straight and provide clarity on the matter as follows;

It is important to note that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of YEA, Mr Malik Basintale, assumed office in February 2025. It is therefore factually inaccurate for any group to allege that the CEO has failed to pay them for ten months, when he has been in office for only eight months”.

The statement further added, “Upon assumption of office, the CEO inherited the existing payroll, which was presented to the Board of YEA and duly approved. Since February 2025, all staff members captured on the official payroll have been paid consistently up to September 2025. No individual whose name was duly verified and approved has been left out of the payroll

In keeping with transparency, management undertook a comprehensive staff audit earlier this year to ensure that only legitimate employees are maintained on the payroll. This exercise, far from being punitive, was to protect the integrity of the Agency and safeguard public funds. All staff who participated in the audit have been paid accordingly and continue to receive their entitlements”.

The statement further clarified that “certain categories of staff had their contracts expire prior to the CEO’s assumption of office. In such cases, management directed that they reapply for renewal through their respective directors. Those whose contracts were renewed have since been placed on the payroll”.

The Youth Employment Agency assures the public and all stakeholders that the Agency remains committed to protecting the interests of its staff, ensuring accountability, and delivering on its mandate to create sustainable employment for Ghanaian youth”.

The YEA statement comes following some staff of the Agency across the country demanding the release of 10 months’ unpaid salaries.

According to the YEA staff, numbering about 300, they depend on their wives and menial jobs to survive as they have not been paid for 10 months.

The YEA staff have accused the agency of neglect and frustration.

Speaking at a news conference in Kumasi on Wednesday, October 8, they appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in their situation.

Osei Yaw Akoto, the convener for the group, stated, “Mr President, please hear our cry and save us and our families from further starvation”.

The YEA staff revealed they were permanently employed in November 2024 after receiving clearance from the Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Finance, and were posted, but have since not received any salaries.

They further claimed that the YEA CEO revealed that their mechanisation was valid in a Zoom meeting in February 2025, but said an audit would be conducted to address concerns of unqualified staff.

According to them, they are starving, with some unable to feed their families, pay school fees, or sustain their marriages.

They further cited cases of colleagues suffering strokes and one nearly attempting to commit suicide due to the situation.

The YEA staff described their situation as a human rights issue and accused management of deliberately frustrating them.

Abronye arrested again, granted GH¢1 million bail

Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was arrested yesterday, 8 October 2025 and granted bail of GH¢1 million with two sureties.

According to reports, Abronye has been re-arrested and charged with two new criminal counts. The court has granted him bail set at GH¢1 million with two sureties for the offences related to false publication and insulting conduct.

Abronye has alleged that his second arrest was orchestrated by the bodyguard of NPP flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong.

This marks the second time in three weeks that Abronye has been arrested.

It will be recalled, Abronye was arrested on Monday, September 8, by the Ghana Police Service, based on what the police described as “offensive conduct conducive to the breach of public peace”.

Before his arrest, he had sought political asylum and security protection over threats on his life by government operatives and IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno and his boys.

Abronye was granted bail of the sum of GH¢50,000 with one surety, without justification.

Meanwhile,  Abronye DC has confidently declared that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government cannot silence him because of his mouth.

Abronye, on his Ohia TV show, has detailed his ordeal with the Ghana Police Service.

According to Abronye, the Police suspected some government officials were leaking information to him and wanted to seize his phone.

He revealed that the Police demanded his mobile phones to scan and search for the sources of evidence and allegations.

Abronye also revealed that the Police questioned him about two companies he owned and some fifteen houses they allegedly claimed he owned.

The NPP regional Chairman insisted that his arrest and prosecution would not silence him.

Speaking for the first time on the Ohia TV show, Abronye, “The NDC government cannot silence me because of my mouth. When Tetteh Yohonu came to arrest me, the first thing they demanded was my mobile phone so they could track my information. They mentioned two companies, Asampa Country Men and Abronye Communication and Mining and asked which government contracts I had used them for”.

“I told them jokingly that I used them to build the Jubilee House because they cannot take me there and ask me unnecessary questions”.

He added, “They also questioned me about my alleged 15 houses in Accra, an accusation made by an ally of Kennedy Agyapong. I told them to go and look for the houses and give them to the state, because they wanted to know where the houses were”, he added.

All five NPP presidential aspirants cleared for January 31 ‘showdown’

All five flagbearer aspirants contesting to become the next New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer have been cleared to contest by the party’s Election Committee.

According to reports, no aspirant was disqualified, and all five have been invited to take part in the balloting for positions on the ballot paper this Friday.

The information gathered suggests the NPP is expected to make an official announcement later today.

All five aspirants being cleared follow Tuesday’s meeting of the National Council in Accra, which reviewed the report of the Presidential Vetting Committee.

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum have all been cleared to contest the scheduled election for January 31 2026, with a possible run-off on February 14.

Parts of the letter to an aspirant read, “I bring you warm greetings from the Presidential Elections Committee and congratulate you on a successful vetting outcome. The Chairman of the Committee has directed me to extend an invitation for your participation in a balloting process to determine your positions on the ballot paper for the upcoming January 31st Presidential primary”.

Meanwhile, Mussa Dankwa, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, has said Kennedy Agyapong and other contenders face a daunting task to catch up with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to Mussa Dankwa, it is still not over, but it is highly unlikely that every undecided voter will go to one candidate.

He highlighted that Dr Bawumia’s advantage will be difficult to overturn.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, September 29, Mussa Dankwa stated, “It is still not over. I won’t say it is over, but if you look at where the leading candidate is, it is highly unlikely that every undecided voter will go to one candidate”.

“We believe that Kennedy has to do a lot more to bring Dr Bawumia down, or his other competitors should do a lot more in order to drag Dr Bawumia from where he is,” he added.

Mussa Dankwa’s remarks come following a latest poll by the Global Info Analytics, which reveals Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, has taken a commanding lead in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries.

The poll results published on social media platforms by the Global Info Analytics revealed that Dr Bawumia secured 47 per cent of delegate support and is the clear front-runner ahead of the NPP’s primaries.

Dr Bawumia continues to enjoy the confidence of nearly half of the delegates surveyed.

Kennedy Agyapong, the former Assin Central legislator, emerged second with 17 per cent of delegates’ support.

Dr Bryan Acheampong secured only 3 per cent of delegates’ votes, while Dr Yaw Adutwum and Ing Kwabena Agyapong secured 1 per cent of delegates’ votes respectively.

However, the poll revealed that a significant number of delegates, 27 per cent, remain undecided.

Also, the poll revealed  57 per cent of Ghanaians prefer former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the next general election.

“I am hopeful bail processes will be finalised today” – Wontumi’s lawyer

Lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has said he is hopeful his client will meet his bail conditions and be released from police today.

Andy Appiah-Kubi noted that although the court granted Wontumi bail, the process could not be completed before the close of the day yesterday, Tuesday.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi stated, “We made an application for bail on Tuesday, and the court granted it with three sureties, two to be justified. We are processing the application, and by God’s grace, we have had people to sign the bail bond and stand as sureties”

“It was late after the court proceedings, so we couldn’t complete the process with the police and the court registrar. This morning, the police prosecutor, ASP Godwin, called to inform me that his men are ready to inspect the properties of the sureties so we can expedite the process,” he explained.

He added, “I really appreciate the effort of the police prosecutor for calling me to inform me they are ready. This is rare. I must also commend the court registrar, who is coincidentally also called Gordon, for his effort to expedite the process”

“I am very hopeful the processes will be finalised today, and Wontumi will be released,” he added.

Wontumi on Tuesday, October 7, was granted a ₵25 million bail by the Criminal Division of the Accra High Court in connection with two separate cases relating to alleged illegal mining.

Chairman Wontumi and the Operations Manager of Akonta Mining Company Limited were granted bail in the sum of GHC10 million with two sureties.

The two sureties, one must be justified with proof of landed property.

Wontumi and Akonta Mining have been accused of destroying 13 hectares of land in the Tano Nimiri forest.

The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman pleaded not guilty to all seven charges levelled against him.

Chairman Wontumi was slapped with seven fresh charges, which stem from his alleged mining in Tano Nimire Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

The charges come barely after he appeared in a separate case.

In this case, Wontumi and four others associated with his Akonta Mining Company Limited are facing the accusations of unlawfully engaging in mining operations, environmental destruction.

Additionally, the Accra High Court has granted Wontumi a ₵15 million bail with three sureties in a separate case.

According to the court, Wontumi’s sureties must be justified with landed properties.

The presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, granted Wontumi bail on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after hearing arguments from Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, and the Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai.

Andy Appiah-Kubi urged the court to grant bail, insisting that his client posed no flight risk; however, Dr Srem-Sai, who did not oppose, called on the court to impose stringent conditions given the gravity of the charges.

He argued, “Gold mining is a capital-intensive business, and by their own admission, the accused is a man of substance. It is common knowledge that persons of substance are often greater flight risks”.

Wontumi was granted a GHC 15 million bail bond, three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

He is also to deposit all passports with the court registrar; he has also been placed on the Ghana immigration stop list at all entry and exit points.

Also, Wontumi must report to investigators on the first and third Monday of every month.

The Accra High Court gave the prosecution three weeks to file disclosures.

Meanwhile, the next hearing is scheduled for October 28, 2025.

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, an aide to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has backed the decision to take Chairman Wontumi to court.

According to Dennis Miracles Aboagye, he is glad Chairman Wontumi is having his day in court.

He emphasised that anyone found foul of the law should be taken to court for that person to prove whether or not he is involved in galamsey.

Speaking on ChannelOne TV on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Dennis Miracles Aboagye stated, “I’m glad that finally Chairman Wontumi is having his day in court. For me I think that is how we should run our society; anybody found foul of the law should be taken to court. Let the person go through the court system before we drag them in the public space,”

“Chairman Wontumi has a responsibility to prove to the entire country that he is not engaged in galamsey because Akonta Mining, as we all know, is a licensed small-scale mining company. Is he engaged in galamsey? Let the court determine that,” he said.

He added, “Once again, Chairman Wontumi’s prosecution and persecution actually bring up a very important point. For the entire period when the NDC were in opposition, they created an impression as if Chairman Wontumi is the one doing galamsey.

 Today, as Chairman Wontumi is in court, do you know what the expectation of Ghanaians is? We shouldn’t see galamsey going on. If galamsey is still going on, who is the other kingpin? Who are they?” he quizzed.

He further quizzed why the NDC chairman in Upper Denkyira East, who was captured fighting the military, is not in court.

He added, “Who are the other people? Why are they not in court with Chairman Wontumi? Your cameras have captured the NDC chairman in Upper Denkyira East fighting military men, plainly doing galamsey.

Why is he not in court? The Aowin Traditional Council has written a petition to the President about the NDC MP for Aowin. Why is he not in court with Chairman Wontumi? In nine months, you have allegedly gotten one kingpin, and yet we see galamsey tripling in its devastating effect. Who are the other people, because you said that once NPP is voted out of power, galamsey would end?”

Some Teachers in the Ketu South constituency are urgently calling on their MP, Hon Dzifa Gomashie, to intervene as poor infrastructure continues to disrupt learning.

In a painful video recorded by a teacher, students were seen running for shelter as rain poured through their makeshift classroom structures.

In the viral video shared the students who were being taught under trees were interrupted as they were alerted to come inside, as it was about to rain.

The student hurriedly carried their desk and ran into a school building.

Some students were also spotted running in the heavy downpour to get their belongings.

Speaking in the viral video, a Teacher at the school stated, “Hey, hurry up and come in, it is about to rain, these are the things we have been going through on the school campus. They are not coming to work for us, we beg. Where is our MP?  We beg you, MP, come and help us. We are going to die”.

Meanwhile, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and Member of Parliament for Ketu South, has said her constituency deserves a Tertiary Institution.

According to Dzifa Gomashie, one of the reasons why she fought hard for the NDC to win the 2024 election is so she will be able to push for a Tertiary Institution in Ketu South.

Speaking to Bola Ray of Starr Chat, Abla Dzifa Gomashie stated, “The second one will be education, it is a big constituency, but as I speak to you now, I don’t have even one Tertiary Institution in the community, and I am not happy about that.

It is the reason I fought as hard as I could so my party would win, so that I could champion that cause. So, I am not going to relent on it, I am going to push as hard as I can, but we do need a Tertiary Institution in Ketu South”.

Dzifa Gomashie also added that although she is happy to be known as the MP who brings in more votes for the National Democratic Congress, it must reflect the lives of the people in the constituency.

She asserted that dealing with the issues of Ketu South is very daunting and knows her predecessor will agree with her for the constituency to be divided.

According to her, she will push for Ketu South to be divided as the constituency is too huge.

Dzifa Gomashie, “Division of the Constituency, I think it should be divided. I am happy to be known as the person who brings in the biggest vote and all of that, but it must reflect in the lives of the people.

I will champion the division of the constituency because it is too large, and dealing with the issues that come with it is really daunting. I know from the bottom of my heart that all the MPs before me will attest to this fact”.

“It is a nice feeling to say I come with the votes, but for the sake of the people, I would rather the people benefit than to have personal glory for bringing the big votes, so what?”, she added.

When asked about her three main issues she wants to tackle and be known for, Dzifa Gomashie added, “I have said this in the constituency so many times, the human resources that I have there, their development is my most pressing need.

The Children of Ketu South, the youths of Ketu South, the women, and everybody within the space have the opportunity to improve upon who they are and where they are.

All the lists you gave me gave me a bittersweet feeling, because I have the opportunity to explore, I wish the same for Ketu South and the people in it”.

DOVVSU arrest two nannies for shockingly drugging twin toddlers

The Airport Divisional Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU)  has arrested two nannies for shockingly drugging twin toddlers with a sleep-inducing substance in East Legon.

The suspects have been identified as Francisca Boakye, 30, a student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah, 31, from Jasikan in the Oti Region.

The two were arrested after the mother of the twins filed a complaint in September 2025.

Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of the Public Affairs Unit, during a press briefing, revealed the mother reported observing unusual drowsiness and behavioural changes in her two-year-old twin boys, which prompted further enquiries.

It was revealed that the nannies were administering an unidentified sleep-inducing substance into the children’s milk without the mother’s consent.

Superintendent Obeng stated, “They claim the substance made the children sleep for extended hours so they could attend to other household chores”.

Police investigations revealed Harriet Ansah admitted to the act and claimed she learned the practice from her Francisca Boakye.

Harriet Ansah further revealed that she had subjected the children to other abuse by striking their heads with a fire and calling them chimpanzees.

Following a search in the suspects’ living quarters, two used sachets and four unused sachets containing substances were retrieved.

Francisca Boakye and Harriet Ansah have both been charged with the appropriate offences and are currently in police custody, expected to reappear before the court on 20th October 2025.

Superintendent Obeng further condemned the inhumane treatment of the children as deplorable and unacceptable.

“We urge all parents and guardians to be extra vigilant in the supervision of domestic staff, especially those left in charge of vulnerable persons such as children,” she added.

In related news, the Ghana Police Service has launched a manhunt for the suspect who assaulted one of their Officer at Garu in the Upper East Region.

According to reports, the Police officer was assaulted on 6th October 2025 when the officer and Community Protection Assistants (CPAs) were conducting stop-and-search operations along the Garu–Nakpanduri road.

The Police intercepted a tricycle loaded with sacks of groundnuts with some passengers sitting on top.

The Ghana Police statement read, “The Upper East Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into an incident in which a police officer was assaulted by a commercial tricycle rider at Garu in the Upper East Region.

The incident occurred on 6th October 2025, when the officer and Community Protection Assistants (CPAs) were conducting stop-and-search operations along the Garu-Nakpanduri road”.

The statement added, “The team intercepted a tricycle loaded with sacks of groundnuts and passengers sitting on top. When the officer instructed the rider to stop and park properly for inspection, he became aggressive and attacked the officer. The suspect then fled the scene on his tricycle.

Efforts are underway to arrest the tricycle rider and ensure he faces the full rigours of the law”.

Rosemond Obeng, a Presidential Staffer/Member, NDC Communications Team, has accused the former New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of issuing mining licenses like candy.

The Presidential Staffer emphasised that the NPP has no audacity to say galamsey is worsening under the NDC.

Speaking on GHOne TV, Rosemond Obeng stated, “NPP was issuing mining licences like candy, and they have the audacity to say galamsey is worsening under the NDC?”

In related news, President John Mahama says his administration has not issued a single mining license since taking office.

Speaking at his maiden media encounter on Wednesday, September 10, John Mahama stated, “Let me be clear, since my administration resumed office, not a single license has been issued to any company to mine in our forest reserves.

“The repeal of Li 2462 is, therefore, intended just to crystallise in law what we have already demonstrated in practice, which is our commitment to protect these forest reserves.”

He added, “A dedicated national task force is currently in place, actively combating the menace of illegal mining. As a result of their operations, hundreds of excavators, water pumps and other heavy equipment have been seized, disrupting the networks that have long exploited our lands and our rivers.”

“Nine forest reserves have been successfully recovered from the grip of illegal miners, restoring these vital ecosystems under state protection.”

John Mahama further added, “Our tree for life initiative is being actively rolled out across the country, targeting the restoration of lands degraded by legal mining activities.”

Meanwhile, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has stormed a notorious galamsey hideout named ‘Gangway’ at Aboso in the Western Region.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of Government Communication, the operation was carried out on Monday, October 5, 2025.

In a post on X, he wrote, “The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has carried out a significant operation in the Western Region, targeting notorious galamsey hideouts.

On Monday, October 5, 2025, the Task Force stormed “Gangway,” a crime-infested community in Aboso, Prestea-Huni Valley District.

-Makeshift Structures Destroyed*: Several makeshift structures serving as hideouts and drug bases were set ablaze, and galamsey equipment was destroyed.

-Hundreds Surrender: Several hundred locals, mostly galamseyers, surrendered to the Task Force. These individuals were involved in various social vices, including illegal mining, trading, and narcotics smoking, as well as gambling.

-Drugs Seized- Eleven parcels of Indian Hemp were seized, alongside other hard drugs.

– Previous Warnings Ignored: This operation follows a similar one in June 2025, where NAIMOS warned criminal gangs and galamseyers to vacate the area. Despite this, the warnings were ignored.

Additional Operations:

While en route to Gangway, the NAIMOS Task Force conducted anti-galamsey operations in the Dadwen-Domping areas of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. These operations resulted in:

– Seizure of Equipment: 15 water pumping machines and one generator set were seized.

– *Destruction of Equipment*: Three chanfangs were destroyed, and other structures and equipment belonging to illegal miners were set ablaze.

The NAIMOS Task Force remains committed to combating illegal mining and its associated social vices in the region”.

However, some netizens have reacted to the news saying, “Strong move by NAIMOS, but it’ll only matter if it’s followed by sustained enforcement, rehabilitation, and real alternatives for those who surrendered. Otherwise, it’s just another fire that’ll burn out too soon”.

Another netizen wrote, “Boss Felix, something baffles me. So are we saying, upon all these arrests NAIMOS is doing, none of these victims can lead the security to the big men who are sponsoring these acts?”.

One more X user wrote, “Meanwhile, the person who put them there is paying them chop money if ¢50 daily aside their wages is cooling off somewhere in Accra. Next week the foreman will get a new squad to go and continue from where they left off”.

Grace Akosua Amoabeng, a Member of the  NPP Communications Team, has said the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), case is a pure witch-hunting by the NDC government.

According to Grace Akosua Amoabeng, Chairman Wontumi’s bail conditions are not right.

Speaking on GHOne TV, the NPP communicator stated, “Chairman Wontrumi’s case is pure witch-hunting by NDC, his bail conditions are simply not right”.

Chairman Wontumi and the Operations Manager of Akonta Mining Company Limited were granted bail in the sum of GHC10 million with two sureties.

The two sureties, one must be justified with proof of landed property.

Wontumi and Akonta Mining have been accused of destroying 13 hectares of land in the Tano Nimiri forest.

The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman pleaded not guilty to all seven charges levelled against him.

Chairman Wontumi was slapped with seven fresh charges, which stem from his alleged mining in Tano Nimire Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

The charges come barely after he appeared in a separate case.

In this case, Wontumi and four others associated with his Akonta Mining Company Limited are facing the accusations of unlawfully engaging in mining operations, environmental destruction.

“Count one: Undertaking a mining operation in 2022 at Samreboi without a valid licence.

Count Two: Undertaking a mining operation without a licence, Chairman Wontumi and one Kwame Antwi at Tano Nimire Forest Reserve.

Count Three: Undertaking a mining operation without a licence

Count four: Felling trees in a forest reserve without written authority

Count Five: Abetment of unauthorised felling of trees, Wontumi and three others

Count Six: Erecting buildings in a forest reserve without written authority

Count Seven: Abetment of unauthorised erection of buildings in a forest reserve”

Additionally, Chairman Wontumi has been charged alongside two others in connection with galamsey activities allegedly carried out by his Akonta Mining Limited.

Wontumi has been charged alongside Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Company Limited (Wontumi’s firm).

The second accused person, Kwame Antwi, is currently on the run.

According to court documents, Chairman Wontumi have been slapped with six counts, including “Assignment of mineral rights without approval, Assignment of mineral rights without approval, Corporate liability for unauthorised assignment, Purposely facilitating unlicensed mining, Purposely facilitating unlicensed mining, and Corporate facilitation of unlicensed mining”.

Wontumi and the two other charges stem from alleged unauthorised mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The charge sheet detailed that an operation by state security on April 26, 2025, led to the arrest of Michael Ayisi Gyedu and 28 on the Akonta Mining concession.

Mr Gyedu, during interrogation, fingered one Henry Okum as the one who gave him authorisation to supervise mining activities on the land.

According to the state, Henry Okum, during interrogation, admitted to seeking and receiving permission from Chairman Wontumi to mine within the Samreboi concession.

Investigators alleged that Wontumi granted permission without first obtaining the legally required approval from the Minister, as mandated by the laws.

Meanwhile, the Accra High Court has granted the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, a ₵15 million bail with three sureties.

According to the court, Wontumi’s sureties must be justified with landed properties.

The presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, granted Wontumi bail on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after hearing arguments from Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, and the Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai.

Andy Appiah-Kubi urged the court to grant bail, insisting that his client posed no flight risk; however, Dr Srem-Sai, who did not oppose, called on the court to impose stringent conditions given the gravity of the charges.

He argued, “Gold mining is a capital-intensive business, and by their own admission, the accused is a man of substance. It is common knowledge that persons of substance are often greater flight risks”.

Wontumi was granted a GHC 15 million bail bond, three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

He is also to deposit all passports with the court registrar; he has also been placed on the Ghana immigration stop list at all entry and exit points.

Also, Wontumi must report to investigators on the first and third Monday of every month.

The Accra High Court gave the prosecution three weeks to file disclosures.

Meanwhile, the next hearing is scheduled for October 28, 2025.

“We are starving” – YEA staff cry out over 10 months’ unpaid salary

Some staff of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) across the country are demanding the release of 10 months’ unpaid salaries.

According to the YEA staff, numbering about 300, they depend on their wives and menial jobs to survive as they have not been paid for 10 months.

The YEA staff have accused the agency of neglect and frustration.

Speaking at a news conference in Kumasi on Wednesday, October 8, they appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in their situation.

Osei Yaw Akoto, the convener for the group, stated, “Mr President, please hear our cry and save us and our families from further starvation”.

The YEA staff revealed they were permanently employed in November 2024 after receiving clearance from the Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Finance, and were posted, but have since not received any salaries.

They further claimed that the YEA CEO revealed that their mechanisation was valid in a Zoom meeting in February 2025, but said an audit would be conducted to address concerns of unqualified staff.

According to them, they are starving, with some unable to feed their families, pay school fees, or sustain their marriages.

They further cited cases of colleagues suffering strokes and one nearly attempting to commit suicide due to the situation.

The YEA staff described their situation as a human rights issue and accused management of deliberately frustrating them.

In related news, Malik Basintale, the Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), has revealed plans to increase the allowance of the agency’s sanitation module by 300 per cent.

Speaking to journalists after appearing before the Public Accounts Committee on Friday, August 22, 2025, Basintale stated, “When I took office, I swore by my late grandfather’s grave that no contract would be signed to pay GH¢258.

That figure is unacceptable in this modern era. In any future contract, we will not go below the minimum wage. We are looking at more than a 300 percent increase,” he stressed.

“We have not discovered ghost names; what we found are individuals who were absent. Those at post have been validated, but those absent will lose two months’ pay.

“Beneficiaries who were validated can attest that their allowances have already been credited to their accounts,” he explained.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip, has said his phone has been buzzing with NDC foot soldiers calling not happy with the maximum age limit for enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces.

In a social media post on his X page on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, Dafeamekpor wrote, “I have had many calls from our Party foot soldiers regarding the Army Recruitment and max age for prospective applicants. They aren’t happy”.

Dafeamekpor further went on to make a long reference to the maximum age limits for military recruitment in other countries around the world.

The South Dayi MP cited examples from African countries such as Benin and the Ivory Coast, where the maximum age limit for prospective applicants is 35 years.

He called for the same approach to be considered in Ghana and emphasised that the recruitment must come with clear conditions and defined roles for individuals within that age group.

“So, in Ghana, we can extend our age limit to say 35 years or even 40 years, depending on the medical fitness and non-combatant roles. We need new ways of doing things,” he stated.

Also, Sam Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has said a maximum enlistment age of 35 years would serve our young people better.

According to Sam George, there are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation.

Sam George called for the re-examination of the maximum age for enlistment into Ghana’s military services.

In a post on X, Sam George wrote, “I honestly believe it is time for our beloved Nation to re-examine the maximum age for enlistment into our military services.

There are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation. We must not deny them this opportunity simply because of their age.

There is a precedence across the world. I believe an upper limit of 35 years would serve our young people better. Let’s nurture their dreams and not kill it.

For God and Country”, he added.

It must be noted that Ghana’s maximum age for enlistment into Ghana’s military services is not more than 25 years, and not more than 27 years for tradesmen.

Their calls follow the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) announcement of the commencement of the 2025 enlistment and recruitment across all 16 regional capitals of the country.

The recruitment process has been officially published in state-owned newspapers, including the Daily Graphic and Ghanaian Times.

According to the GAF, the decentralised recruitment is aimed at offering equal opportunity to all eligible applicants, regardless of location.

GAF, in an earlier press release issued on Monday, September 29, stated, “The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that the 2025 Enlistment/Recruitment? Enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces will commence in the coming days at all the regional capitals of the 16 Regions of the country. This approach offers equal opportunity for all potential applicants in the entire country,

The enlistment/recruitment exercise will be announced through the official Ghana Armed Forces platforms such as gafonline.mil.gh, gafrecruitment.mil.gh, in addition to the Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Times newspapers”.

The statement further added, “The general Public is kindly informed that any purported recruitment links on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or any other social media platforms inviting people for protocol recruitment is a scam and should be ignored.

Additionally, no such enlistment/recruitment invitation will emanate from any member of the Ghana Armed Forces or its High Command and should be ignored as well.

Dr Rashid Pelpuo, the Employment and Labour Relations Minister, has said the former Akufo-Addo government recruited 12,000 new workers without financial clearance to pay them.

 Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on October stated, “This tells the story of what complaints we had when we assumed office. At the point of exit of the NPP government, they imposed on us 12,000 new workers that they did not prepare to pay. They didn’t have the money to pay them, but they employed them. And then they exited.

The three-month budgets which they had to prepare for, as we take over, didn’t take into consideration any of these. And so we came into office with no preparations to pay anybody.

All the people they had just newly employed did not have enough clearance, but they imposed them on the government, and then they left”.

He further recalled a similar situation in the past under President J.A. Kufuor when he was leaving office.

Dr Rashid Pelpuo added, “Remember when President J.A. Kufuor was leaving, what was imposed on us was the Single Spine Salary Structure, which Atta Mills had to struggle with. So it’s like their DNA to give the incoming government a problem — let them fail, and let the people say that they have failed.

“It’s not a good thing for us to be doing. Once your point of existence as a government comes to an end, go. The people had already rejected you. There’s nothing you can do to bring yourself back to power. You can’t recreate a future which has been lost.”

“We are working towards ending this problem of unpaid workers. We acknowledge the fact that young people need to start life and be comfortable working for what they have been employed to do.

So we are doing everything to make it possible that we solve this problem, maybe before the end of the year.”

Also, Dr Rashid Pelpuo revealed that ministers serving under President John Mahama’s administration, including himself, have not been paid for nine months.

According to Dr Rashid Pelpuo, the delay is part of a broader problem with the government’s new payroll system.

He revealed that the system is in a renewal stage aimed at avoiding future payment challenges.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, Dr Rashid Pelpuo explained, “It’s the overall system of renewal so that you don’t run into a problem eventually that we are trying to solve”.

“It’s not about the fact that the money is not there right now, but it’s about the fact that you want to do it alongside all the others they are complaining about, so that we just have a completely addressed system.”

Dr Rashid Pelpuo further touched on the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives staged a protest in Accra to demand payment.

He added, “Yeah, there’s a problem.  And if we can resolve ours, and newly employed nurses and teachers cannot resolve theirs, then there’s a problem. So it has to be done holistically, so everybody can be paid.”

“But those who are members of parliament and non-ministers, the parliamentary system has been taking care of them. The parliamentary system is okay, it’s properly done and operational”.

Dr Rashid Pelpuo further accused the Akufo-Addo government of burdening the Mahama government with 12,000 newly recruited public sector workers before exiting office.

He added, “This gentleman here has to be arrested and brought to justice!! He has no right to assault an officer 👮!! Is it because the officers are too lenient to us that’s why all these things do happen??”.

“This is happening because you guys sold your respect for money. If you want civilians to respect you, then change your behaviour”, another netizen added.

One more netizen advised the Police, “Garu tempane should have more police presence, and a command station should be set up in tempane”.

Additionally, a netizen added, “Great work! These things are becoming far too common on the streets. Find him, bring him to justice and lock him up next time he’ll learn sense”.

Furthermore, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), has issued a bold statement to criminals operating in Ghana.

According to COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, no matter how far or long they run, the police will eventually catch up with them.

Speaking during a press briefing at the National Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday, September 24, COP Donkor stated, “To the criminals out there, always remember that you may run and hide, but we will surely get you arrested to face the full rigours of the law. We are coming for you”.

“We wish to assure the good people of Ghana that the Police Service will continue to work around the clock to ensure security, law, and order at all times,” she added.

She further added, “As always, we call on all our stakeholders and the general public to continue to support the police, report suspicious activities, and share credible information with the police”.

The Ankobra River in the Nzema East Municipality is located in the Western Region.

– 100 Makeshift structures set ablaze

– 7 Chanfangs destroyed

– 88 Water Pumping Machines seized

– 3 Gas cylinders seized

– 3 Shovels seized

– 4 Plastic Chairs seized

– 2 Water Hoses seized

– 1 DSTV dish seized

– 1 Gen set seized

– 1 Pick Axe seized

In a post on X, he wrote, “The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has carried out a significant operation in the Western Region, targeting notorious galamsey hideouts.

On Monday, October 5, 2025, the Task Force stormed “Gangway,” a crime-infested community in Aboso, Prestea-Huni Valley District.

-Makeshift Structures Destroyed*: Several makeshift structures serving as hideouts and drug bases were set ablaze, and galamsey equipment was destroyed.

-Hundreds Surrender: Several hundred locals, mostly galamseyers, surrendered to the Task Force. These individuals were involved in various social vices, including illegal mining, trading, and narcotics smoking, as well as gambling.

-Drugs Seized- Eleven parcels of Indian Hemp were seized, alongside other hard drugs.

– Previous Warnings Ignored: This operation follows a similar one in June 2025, where NAIMOS warned criminal gangs and galamseyers to vacate the area. Despite this, the warnings were ignored.

Additional Operations:

While en route to Gangway, the NAIMOS Task Force conducted anti-galamsey operations in the Dadwen-Domping areas of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. These operations resulted in:

– Seizure of Equipment: 15 water pumping machines and one generator set were seized.

– *Destruction of Equipment*: Three chanfangs were destroyed, and other structures and equipment belonging to illegal miners were set ablaze.

The NAIMOS Task Force remains committed to combating illegal mining and its associated social vices in the region”.

Meanwhile, the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Col. Dominic Buah, has said illegal miners are the prime enemies of the state.

He said, “Mr. President, with your permission, I would like to send this warning to illegal miners, their assigns, and financiers. They are the first or prime enemies of the state, and they will be dealt with as such. There will be no room for them to escape or to hide. NAIMOS will smoke them out very soon; there is no resting place for them,” Col. Buah said.

Col. Buah added, “They should get ready and be assured that very soon our waters will turn blue and our forests will turn green. We have already trained over 400 troops who are the first batch deployed or are under deployment to sensitive areas. We will continue to deploy more so that we will all go to bed knowing that NAIMOS is firmly on the ground and illegal mining will be a thing of the past.”

“All illegal miners, galamseyers, and financiers, beware. NAIMOS is closer to your bases, and there will be no hiding place for you”, he added.

The minority leader and member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has admitted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have failed Ghana in the fight against illegal gold mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Afenyo-Markin expressed growing politicisation of Ghana’s fight against illegal gold mining.

He highlighted that the political blame game between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is upsetting genuine efforts to fight the galamsey menace.

Speaking at a seminar organised by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) on Ghana’s natural resource management regime, Afenyo-Markin cited the 2020 general elections.

He stated, “During the 2020 campaign, the message was that they [NPP] came to take your food away, so vote against them. And the debate kept going to where we are. If we do the blame game thing, we will not get anywhere”.

“I think it goes beyond the NPP, NDC arguments. I think as a nation, we need a whole national orientation.

“Frankly speaking, I think we all failed our nation. We have to let the authorities know that we have no other alternatives; this must stop,” he stated.

“I can’t see the tunnel, let alone talk about the light” – Domelovo on ORAL lack of prosecutions

Daniel Domelovo, the former Auditor-General and a member of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team, has fumed over the lack of prosecutions so far under the John Mahama government.

It will be recalled that on February 10, 2025, the ORAL team submitted their final report to President John Mahama, who has since directed the Attorney General for further actions.

The chairman of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed that with just 36 cases, Ghana can potentially recover $ 20.49 billion in stolen state resources.

Domelevo painted a grim picture of the Attorney General’s procedure in the ORAL cases as snail speed, as he cannot see the tunnel, let alone talk about the light.

According to Daniel Domelovo, nine months is not a small thing, emphasising that before Ghanaians realised that President John Mahama would be done with the quarter.

The former Auditor-General noted that culprits and their lawyers are praying for a change in government.

Speaking in an interview, Daniel Domelevo stated, “With the briefing that the Attorney General has been giving, a lot of work is going on, but am I satisfied? No. I can’t see the end of the tunnel, not to talk of the light at the end of the tunnel”.

“The procedure currently being used is very slow. Nine months is not small. Before we realise, we’ll be done with the quarter.”

He added, “In fact, the prayer of the culprits and their lawyers is that there should be a change in government. Then you hear nolle prosequi, then our money is gone.

It begs one question: were they prepared before coming to office? Because when I look at the quantum of money we should recover and the snail speed at which we are moving, I wonder when we are going to get there,” he lamented.

He further added, “I think we have to change the speed at which we are moving and let people gain the confidence that things are moving and moving very fast. We need to change the legal framework.

If the government refuses to make these changes, it only tells me that either they are doing the same thing, they are also stealing, or they have the intention of stealing”.

Also, Kofi Bentil, a private legal practitioner, has said that the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) was overhyped and it is under-delivering.

According to Kofi Bentil, despite his criticism of ORAL performance, he maintains his support for the overall goal of fighting corruption.

Speaking on The Key Points on TV3, Saturday, September 27, Kofi Bentil stated, “ORAL was overhyped and it is under-delivering. But I support the call to fight corruption”.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, the Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Searchlight newspaper, has filed a writ at the Supreme Court challenging the legality of the Mahama government’s Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL).

On September 24, 2025, Kuranchie filed his writ invoking the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court under Article 2(1)(b) of the 1992 Constitution.

 According to Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, the formation and operations of ORAL, including its investigations, decisions, reports, and prosecutions involving present and former government officials, are unconstitutional.

He argues that ORAL lacks the legal mandate required under the Constitution to perform such functions.

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has announced that the John Mahama government will introduce a new Sports Levy.

Kofi Adams revealed the Sports Levy will soon be presented to Parliament when it reconvenes.

He explained that the levy forms part of the government’s plan to sustainably finance sports development nationwide, serving as the main funding source for the proposed Sports Development Fund.

Speaking in an interview with Citi FM, Kofi Adams stated, “The government is introducing a sports fund that will make us have a well-structured funding for sports. We do not have that currently, and because of it, our support for sporting activities has been very limited,” the minister explained.

“Young people qualify, they struggle, they go through all the processes, and yet we are unable to push them to participate in competitions. So, the government has decided to establish a sports fund,” he added.

“You can’t establish a fund without a levy. Every fund must have a form of levy that contributes into it.”

Also, Treasurer to the Ghana Olympic Committee, Evans Yeboah, has also added, “There is an incoming Sports Levy that would go into the fund, there is a top-up from the Gaming Commission, so there is a revolving fund within that sector as well”.

‘‘It got cabinet approval two weeks ago, and it is looking to get to parliament very soon. We are hoping that by the end of the year or by the end of Q1 ( first quarter) next year, the Sports Fund will be launched and that will go to assist all the national federations”.

‘‘What is in it is that there is going to be a pool of funds that is reserved to assist national federations, especially the first priority, which is world championships, etc.”, Evans Yeboah added.

In related sports news, Kofi Adams has announced plans for a 50,000-capacity stadium at the Borteyman Sports Complex.

According to him, the Mahama government plans to turn the facility into a modern sports city of international standards.

Kofi Adams noted the infrastructural challenges confronting Ghana’s sports sector, adding that the Mahama government is committed to upgrading facilities to international standards.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Mr. Adams explained, “We are looking to have a new stadium of that size around our Borteyman Sports Complex. Because we want to elevate that whole space into a sports city or village so that international clubs can come and camp and train there.

“With such a facility, we will also add accommodation. When this is done, in the future, you will not see accommodation for the Black Stars on the national budget. But we are working on a PPP arrangement,” he explained.

Kofi Adams added, “We want to do a minimum of 50,000 in the Borteyman space, and we should be able to finish it before 2028,” he said.

Sam Nartey George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has said a maximum enlistment age of 35 years would serve our young people better.

According to Sam George, there are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation.

Sam George called for the re-examination of the maximum age for enlistment into Ghana’s military services.

In a post on X, Sam George wrote, “I honestly believe it is time for our beloved Nation to re-examine the maximum age for enlistment into our military services.

There are people in their 30s who are physically fit and sound enough to serve their Nation. We must not deny them this opportunity simply because of their age.

There is a precedence across the world. I believe an upper limit of 35 years would serve our young people better. Let’s nurture their dreams and not kill it.

For God and Country”, he added.

It must be noted that Ghana’s maximum age for enlistment into Ghana’s military services is not more than 25 years and not more than 27 years for tradesmen.

Sam George’s calls come following the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) announcement of the commencement of the 2025 enlistment and recruitment across all 16 regional capitals of the country.

The recruitment process has been officially published in state-owned newspapers, including the Daily Graphic and Ghanaian Times.

According to the GAF, the decentralised recruitment is aimed at offering equal opportunity to all eligible applicants, regardless of location.

GAF, in an earlier press release issued on Monday, September 29, stated, “The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that the 2025 Enlistment/Recruitment? Enlistment into the Ghana Armed Forces will commence in the coming days at all the regional capitals of the 16 Regions of the country. This approach offers equal opportunity for all potential applicants in the entire country,

The enlistment/recruitment exercise will be announced through the official Ghana Armed Forces platforms such as gafonline.mil.gh, gafrecruitment.mil.gh, in addition to the Daily Graphic and the Ghanaian Times newspapers”.

The statement further added, “The general Public is kindly informed that any purported recruitment links on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or any other social media platforms inviting people for protocol recruitment is a scam and should be ignored.

BoG to stabilise cedi by injecting $1.15bn into forex market

Dr Johnson Asiama, the Bank of Ghana (BoG), has revealed that in October 2025 that the central bank will begin foreign exchange (FX) intermediation under its Domestic Gold Purchase Programme.

According to the central bank, it plans to sell up to $1.15 billion to the market.

The Central Bank revealed the sales will be conducted on a spot basis through twice-weekly, price-competitive auctions open to all licensed banks.

The Governor of the BoG, Dr Johnson Asiama, highlighted that there will be no special conditions or earmarked allocations.

Speaking at a meeting with heads of commercial banks in Accra, the Governor of the BoG, Dr Johnson Asiama, stated, “Beginning October 2025, the Bank of Ghana will commence foreign exchange (FX) intermediation under the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, with plans to sell up to US$1.15 billion for the month.

These sales will be conducted on a spot basis through twice-weekly, price-competitive auctions open to all licensed banks,” he said.

The move is to deepen the interbank FX market, improve price discovery, and stabilise the cedi.

The Domestic Gold Purchase Programme is part of the BoG’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign currency and support long-term exchange rate stability.

Meanwhile, the cedi has been ranked the 4th strongest in Africa by Forbes.

The recent data from the Forbes currency calculator indicates that the Ghana cedi gained 21% against the Dollar in September, according to a new Forbes ranking.

The Tunisian dinar leads the ranking for the month, followed by the Libyan dinar in second place and the Moroccan dirham in third place.

As of September 26, 2025, the dollar was selling at GH¢12.35, the pound at GH¢16.48, and the euro at GH¢14.42 on the interbank exchange market.

In related news.  Dr Johnson Asiama, the Bank of Ghana Governor, has said the Ghana cedi still remains one of the best-performing currencies globally despite the slowdown in remittance inflows.

The BoG Governor highlighted that remittances have not been as strong as in previous periods, but the impact on the cedi’s performance has been confined.

According to Dr Johnson Asiama, the resilience of the cedi is attributed to the sound monetary policy, improved foreign-exchange reserves and tighter regulatory oversight.

Speaking at the opening of the Monetary Policy Committee meeting on September 15, 2025, Dr Johnson Asiama explained, “Despite the seasonal pressures and a slowdown in remittance inflows in recent weeks, the cedi remains one of the strongest currencies globally. Year-to-date, it has appreciated by about 21% as of September 12”.

“External buffers have strengthened. For the first eight months of the year, Ghana recorded a trade surplus of US$6.2 billion, underpinned by robust gold exports and higher cocoa receipts. Gross international reserves stood at US$10.7 billion in August, covering about 4½ months of imports”, he added.

Dr Johnson Asiama added that the cedi is performing alongside other currencies like the Russian ruble, Swedish krona, Norwegian krone, Swiss franc, euro and the British pound.

However, Renowned economist Professor Godfred Bokpin has predicted that the Ghana cedi is likely to end 2025 stabilising between GH₵13.5 and GH₵14 per U.S. dollar.

According to Professor Bokpin, the recent volatility of the cedi is a natural market phenomenon.

He called on Ghanaians to be calm and focus on the nation’s economic fundamentals.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM today, September 16, Professor Bokpin stated, “We have our peak period and then we have our low period as well. In the peak period, when we experience what we call cash flow mismatch in terms of inflows and then outflows…businesses would import in anticipation of Christmas and all of that. So the demand will pick up.”

“If you look at the average rate in the bank and you compare that to the forex bureau and then, of course, the outer layer black market, the divergence is too wide”, he said.

Also, the Deputy Minister for Defence, Hon. Ernest Brogya Genfi, has announced the government’s plans to commence the recruitment of 12,000 personnel into the Ghana Armed Forces over the next three years, as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s military and defence capabilities.

Brogya Genfi added that as part of the president’s dedication to fairness in the distribution of opportunities, the price of application forms has been slashed by 40% and the recruitment processes will be held at all regional levels.

Hon. Genfi stressed that recruitment into the GAF “is not for sale and will never be for sale,” warning against fraudulent syndicates exploiting the process.

“Your advice to Teachers constitutes sexual harassment” – Haruna Iddrisu tackles GNAT President

Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has tackled the President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Rev Isaac Owusu, following his shocking advice to male teachers.

It will be recalled, Rev Isaac Owusu advised male teachers to stop having inappropriate sexual relationships with their students and instead focus on single, beautiful female teachers. 

The GNAT president is quoted by GHOne TV to have said, “Male teachers, we(GNAT) are pleading with you, if you want to do the ‘thing’, we have nice, beautiful female teachers who are single”.

However, Haruna Iddrisu, speaking at the commissioning of the Dr Leonard Kaledzi Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence Education at Anloga on October 7, noted that the GNAT president’s advice constitutes sexual harassment.

The Education Minister stated, “We will punish any teacher found in any compromising act with a female student because it does not guarantee safety and learning in the environment.

So, the words of the GNAT President, who advised that male teachers who want to have sexual relations can do it with female teachers — I am reminding him that even that will constitute sexual harassment as it goes against the teaching code of conduct,” he said.

Also, a former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, has said some teachers are suffering in schools at the hands of certain students.

According to Professor Marfo, there are no saints in the world, as everyone has a shortcoming.

Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, speaking on the viral video involving the current Assistant Headmaster of KNUST Senior High School, Charles Akwasi Aidoo, made this known.

Speaking on Oyerepa TV on October 6, 2025, Professor Marfo stated, “There is no saint in the world. Everyone has their shortcomings, and we must work to fix them.

So, this is a wake-up call to fix things. That’s why I’m saying, how old is the child? Look at the background. How old is she? How is her lifestyle? I have even heard that it was through the teacher that they sacked her boyfriend from the school, so it was essentially a punishment for him.

There are several other incidents like this, but this one just happened to be captured on video. As humans, we must know our shortcomings and work on them”, he stated.

Professor Marfo noted that, every man likes women and is a potential womaniser.

He further added, “That is why, when men say they don’t like women, I see them differently because to me… You’re not a man if you say you don’t like women because every man likes women and is a potential womaniser.

There are bigger issues that need attention. Some teachers are also suffering in schools at the hands of certain students. For instance, there was a case where a student reportedly locked a teacher in an office, demanding an affair or threatening to frame him if he refused”, he said.

Meanwhile, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the vice president, has condemned the growing sexual misconduct in Ghana’s Senior High Schools.

According to Prof Opoku-Agyemang, teachers being transferred after inappropriate sexual relationships between them and students is not a punishment.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang labelled Teachers involved in sexual misconduct acts as disgraceful to the noble profession of teaching.

The vice president urged teachers to embrace mentorship and lifelong learning as important elements of their professional development.

She further highlighted that the government will not waver in punishing individuals who infringe the trust placed in them by students.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang stated, “Leadership cannot ignore those teachers in positions of power who abuse our young pupils. The recent event involving one of our teachers in a management position is a case in point. As teachers, we must always remember that we are placed in a position of trust, protection, and empathy.

“The power given to us is to facilitate learning. We will not wait to apply sanctions to those who violate that trust”.

“I am highly disappointed in how political he has become” – Ayikoi Otoo hits back at Domelovo   

Ayikoi Otoo, a former Attorney-General and counsel for former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, has hit back at the former Auditor-General Daniel Domelovo after he accused him of presenting fake evidence to protect Gertrude Torkornoo.

Daniel Domelovo, in an interview on the KSM Show, alleged that Mr Otoo presented fake documents during the committee set up by President John Mahama to probe the former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

According to Domelevo, it is interesting that lawyer Ayikoi Otoo criticised the committee and claimed procedural breaches.

Lawyer Ayikoi Otoo served as the lead counsel for Getrude Torkornoo during the proceedings, claimed that the committee acted unfairly and relied on questionable documents in its findings.

Speaking on the issue, Daniel Yao Domelevo stated, “Mr Otoo’s attack on me, I find it very interesting. He said he provided all the evidence to me, and that I sat there and didn’t take it. But I want to put it on record that he provided us with fake evidence”.

Domelevo revealed that one of the documents in question was supposedly signed by the Judicial Secretary, claiming to appoint the Chief Justice, a process he said was crooked and raised serious concerns about authenticity.

Reacting to Daniel Domelovo’s allegation, Ayikoi Otoo stated that he is highly disappointed in Domelovo and how political he has become.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story,  Mr Otoo stated, “I have listened to him; I was surprised at what he is doing. I didn’t know him to be that political, but I see him as only wearing political glasses…”

“This was the context. There was an audit report which raised certain issues. Those findings were sent to the Judicial Secretary, who is the spending officer, and the Judicial Secretary explained, using the travel policy, why certain expenditures were made.”

Mr Otoo added, “That management report is still available for everybody to read. This is where I brought in Domelovo. As an experienced and former Auditor-General, I was surprised he sat there quietly when I made reference to management letters and queries—issues he knows very well.”

“How come at the end of it all, you come and tell us that she was not entitled to something?” Mr Otoo asked.

He further added, “This is the man who should know—he’s the one who understands audit processes and management letters. Yet they ignored all of that and in their report claimed the Chief Justice was involved in some financial irregularity.”

“Did I do anything wrong?” he asked. “I didn’t mention any other person’s name. I only referred to what happened in the audit process.”

Also, Mr Otoo on Citi Eyewitness News expressed deep shock at Domelovo’s claims.

Mr Otoo stated, “I have listened to him and I am shocked by the things he went and sat there to do,” Otoo said. “If only he was doing politics. I have exposed them that they did a shoddy job, whether as a result of that they are now trying to find some face-saving measures.”

“Were you not in this country when the CJ was appointed…Didn’t we know when she was appointed? Didn’t we see that the President gave a warrant?” he asked. “That warrant of appointment will not contain your terms of service.”

“When we are talking of conditions of service and the person brings you one and it is signed by the spending officer, you decide that that thing is a forgery? It is something that beats everyone’s imagination, having regard to his experience — unless we have put him too high, beyond where he really belongs.”

“So nothing of the sort happened. We only presented the letter,” he stressed.

Transport fares to be increased if … – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has revealed plans to increase transport fares if fuel prices fail to remain stable.

According to the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, the rising fuel costs and the spare parts dealers’ refusal to reduce prices have forced the union to consider adjusting transport fares.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, Samuel Amoah stated, “When we were asked to reduce our transport fare by 15%, the fuel price was around 12.59p for diesel, and the petroleum too was around 11.34p”.

“After that, the expectation was that maybe the fuel price was going to remain the way it was, but then we noticed that it kept going up. At the same time, we are also complaining about the cost of spare parts and other components that we use to run our business.”

The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU further cried out at the spare parts dealers’ refusal to reduce their prices.

He further explained, “We came out complaining that the spare parts dealers should reduce their prices, but they haven’t done so. So, looking at where the fuel prices are now — diesel is now being sold at 14.44 pesewas, thereabout, and then petrol too around 13.69 pesewas — we find that if the next pricing window pushes fuel up again, then the transport operators would have to do some adjustments of transport fares so we can continue to serve the public”.

The GPRTU called on the government to act swiftly to stabilise fuel prices.

“We are asking the government to find a way of holding the fuel pricing for it not to go up again. But if it happens to go up, then there is nothing we can do but to increase the transport fare,” he said.

Meanwhile, the prices of fuel in Ghana have gone up following the continuous depreciation of the Ghana cedi.

The Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have begun adjusting prices at the pumps.

GOIL was the first to adjust prices after most OMCs kept theirs unchanged for about a week, with other OMCs expected to follow suit.

Reports suggest prices should have gone up by about 6% per litre from September 16.

COMAC has explained that the main reason for the adjustment is the depreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar.

The cedi fell from GH¢11.20 to GH¢12.07 to the dollar during the review period, which is a 7.76% drop.

COMAC explained, “The decline is primarily due to strong demand for the dollar for imports ahead of the festive season”.

However, on the global market, crude oil and refined petroleum product prices fell petrol by 2.52%, diesel by 4.12%, and LPG by 2.69%.

The Ghana cedi has come under pressure since the beginning of August due to what some market players describe as a limited supply of dollars on the market.

Meanwhile, Dr Johnson Asiama, the Bank of Ghana Governor, has said the Ghana cedi still remains one of the best-performing currencies globally despite the slowdown in remittance inflows.

The BoG Governor highlighted that remittances have not been as strong as in previous periods, but the impact on the cedi’s performance has been confined.

Speaking to his congregant in a viral video shared on X, the Pastor detailed, “When Covid came, a man that I respected so much, more than any honourable in Ghana, Kennedy Agyapong, I even respected him more than any other men of God but when Covid came, this same man rose against the church, thinking he was disgracing the church, and he had the audacity to say that if he were the president, he would destroy all one-man churches in Ghana.

 Today, that same man needs the church’s vote. If you are speaking, be careful. I am telling you, the only hope of NPP is Bawumia. The same man who rose against the church and Ghana is a Christian country, and this man rose up singlehandedly against the church”.

The man of God further added, “He stated that if he were president, only Roman, Pentecostal and Methodist would be left to operate today, the same man needs people’s vote. I am not somebody who is afraid of the truth”. 

However, a latest poll by the Global Info Analytics, which reveals Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the former Vice President, has taken a commanding lead in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries.

The poll results published on social media platforms by the Global Info Analytics revealed that Dr Bawumia secured 47 per cent of delegate support and is the clear front-runner ahead of the NPP’s primaries.

Dr Bawumia continues to enjoy the confidence of nearly half of the delegates surveyed.

Kennedy Agyapong, the former Assin Central legislator, emerged second with 17 per cent of delegates’ support.

Meanwhile, Mussa Dankwa, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, has said Kennedy Agyapong and other contenders face a daunting task to catch up with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

According to Mussa Dankwa, it is still not over, but it is highly unlikely that every undecided voter will go to one candidate.

He highlighted that Dr Bawumia’s advantage will be difficult to overturn.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Monday, September 29, Mussa Dankwa stated, “It is still not over. I won’t say it is over, but if you look at where the leading candidate is, it is highly unlikely that every undecided voter will go to one candidate”.

“We believe that Kennedy has to do a lot more to bring Dr Bawumia down, or his other competitors should do a lot more in order to drag Dr Bawumia from where he is,” he added.

In court, Chairman Wontumi and the Operations Manager of Akonta Mining Company Limited have been granted bail in the sum of GHC10 million with two sureties.

The two sureties, one must be justified with proof of landed property.

Wontumi and Akonta Mining have been accused of destroying 13 hectares of land in the Tano Nimiri forest.

The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman pleaded not guilty to all seven charges levelled against him.

Chairman Wontumi was slapped with seven fresh charges which stem from his alleged mining in Tano Nimire Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

The charges come barely after he appeared in a separate case.

In this case, Wontumi and four others associated with his Akonta Mining Company Limited are facing the accusations of unlawfully engaging in mining operations, environmental destruction.

“Count one: Undertaking a mining operation in 2022 at Samreboi without a valid licence.

Count Two: Undertaking a mining operation without a licence, Chairman Wontumi and one Kwame Antwi at Tano Nimire Forest Reserve.

Count Three: Undertaking a mining operation without a licence

Count four: Felling trees in a forest reserve without written authority

Count Five: Abetment of unauthorised felling of trees, Wontumi and three others

Count Six: Erecting buildings in a forest reserve without written authority

Count Seven: Abetment of unauthorised erection of buildings in a forest reserve”

Additionally, Chairman Wontumi has been charged alongside two others in connection with galamsey activities allegedly carried out by his Akonta Mining Limited.

Wontumi has been charged alongside Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Company Limited (Wontumi’s firm).

The second accused person, Kwame Antwi, is currently on the run.

According to court documents, Chairman Wontumi have been slapped with six counts, including “Assignment of mineral rights without approval, Assignment of mineral rights without approval, Corporate liability for unauthorised assignment, Purposely facilitating unlicensed mining, Purposely facilitating unlicensed mining, and Corporate facilitation of unlicensed mining”.

Wontumi and the two other charges stem from alleged unauthorised mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The charge sheet detailed that an operation by state security on April 26, 2025, led to the arrest of Michael Ayisi Gyedu and 28 on the Akonta Mining concession.

Mr Gyedu, during interrogation, fingered one Henry Okum as the one who gave him authorisation to supervise mining activities on the land.

According to the state, Henry Okum, during interrogation, admitted to seeking and receiving permission from Chairman Wontumi to mine within the Samreboi concession.

Investigators alleged that Wontumi granted permission without first obtaining the legally required approval from the Minister, as mandated by the laws.

Meanwhile, the Accra High Court has granted the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, a ₵15 million bail with three sureties.

According to the court, Wontumi’s sureties must be justified with landed properties.

The presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, granted Wontumi bail on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after hearing arguments from Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, and the Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai.

Andy Appiah-Kubi urged the court to grant bail, insisting that his client posed no flight risk; however, Dr Srem-Sai, who did not oppose, called on the court to impose stringent conditions given the gravity of the charges.

He argued, “Gold mining is a capital-intensive business, and by their own admission, the accused is a man of substance. It is common knowledge that persons of substance are often greater flight risks”.

Wontumi was granted a GHC 15 million bail bond, three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

He is also to deposit all passports with the court registrar; he has also been placed on the Ghana immigration stop list at all entry and exit points.

Also, Wontumi must report to investigators on the first and third Monday of every month.

The Accra High Court gave the prosecution three weeks to file disclosures.

Meanwhile, the next hearing is scheduled for October 28, 2025.

A former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, has said every man likes women and is a potential womaniser.

According to Professor Marfo, there are no saints in the world, as everyone has a shortcoming.

He emphasised that some teachers are suffering in schools at the hands of certain students.

Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, speaking on the viral video involving the current Assistant Headmaster of KNUST Senior High School, Charles Akwasi Aidoo, made this known.

Speaking on Oyerepa TV on October 6, 2025, Professor Marfo stated, “There is no saint in the world. Everyone has their shortcomings, and we must work to fix them.

So, this is a wake-up call to fix things. That’s why I’m saying, how old is the child? Look at the background. How old is she? How is her lifestyle? I have even heard that it was through the teacher that they sacked her boyfriend from the school, so it was essentially a punishment for him.

There are several other incidents like this, but this one just happened to be captured on video. As humans, we must know our shortcomings and work on them”, he stated.

He further added, “That is why, when men say they don’t like women, I see them differently because to me… You’re not a man if you say you don’t like women because every man likes women and is a potential womaniser.

There are bigger issues that need attention. Some teachers are also suffering in schools at the hands of certain students. For instance, there was a case where a student reportedly locked a teacher in an office, demanding an affair or threatening to frame him if he refused”, he said.

Additionally, Rev Isaac Owusu, the President of, Ghana National Association of Teachers, has weighed into the brouhaha over the growing sexual misconduct in Ghana’s Senior High Schools involving teachers and students.

According to the GNAT president, teachers should stop having inappropriate sexual relationships with their students and instead focus on single, beautiful female teachers. 

The GNAT president is quoted by GHOne TV to have said, “Male teachers, we(GNAT) are pleading with you, if you want to do the ‘thing’, we have nice, beautiful female teachers who are single”.

Also, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the vice president, has condemned the growing sexual misconduct in Ghana’s Senior High Schools.

According to Prof Opoku-Agyemang, teachers being transferred after inappropriate sexual relationships between them and students is not a punishment.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang labelled Teachers involved in sexual misconduct acts as disgraceful to the noble profession of teaching.

The vice president urged teachers to embrace mentorship and lifelong learning as important elements of their professional development.

She further highlighted that the government will not waver in punishing individuals who infringe the trust placed in them by students.

According to court documents, Chairman Wontumi have been slapped with six counts, including “Assignment of mineral rights without approval, Assignment of mineral rights without approval, Corporate liability for unauthorised assignment, Purposely facilitating unlicensed mining, Purposely facilitating unlicensed mining, and Corporate facilitation of unlicensed mining”.

Wontumi and the two other charges stem from alleged unauthorised mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The charge sheet detailed that an operation by state security on April 26, 2025, led to the arrest of Michael Ayisi Gyedu and 28 on the Akonta Mining concession.

Mr Gyedu, during interrogation, fingered one Henry Okum as the one who gave him authorisation to supervise mining activities on the land.

According to the state, Henry Okum, during interrogation, admitted to seeking and receiving permission from Chairman Wontumi to mine within the Samreboi concession.

Investigators alleged that Wontumi granted permission without first obtaining the legally required approval from the Minister, as mandated by the laws.

Meanwhile, the Accra High Court has granted the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, a ₵15 million bail with three sureties.

According to the court, Wontumi’s sureties must be justified with landed properties.

The presiding judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvie-Tay, granted Wontumi bail on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, after hearing arguments from Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, and the Deputy Attorney General, Dr Justice Srem-Sai.

Andy Appiah-Kubi urged the court to grant bail, insisting that his client posed no flight risk; however, Dr Srem-Sai, who did not oppose, called on the court to impose stringent conditions given the gravity of the charges.

He argued, “Gold mining is a capital-intensive business, and by their own admission, the accused is a man of substance. It is common knowledge that persons of substance are often greater flight risks”.

Wontumi was granted a GHC 15 million bail bond, three sureties, two of whom must justify with landed property within the court’s jurisdiction.

He is also to deposit all passports with the court registrar; he has also been placed on the Ghana immigration stop list at all entry and exit points.

Also, Wontumi must report to investigators on the first and third Monday of every month.

The Accra High Court gave the prosecution three weeks to file disclosures.

Meanwhile, the next hearing is scheduled for October 28, 2025.

“Nine months is not small, AG procedure snail speed” – Domelovo fumes over ORAL cases delay

Daniel Domelevo, the former Auditor-General and a member of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) team, has fumed over the lack of loots recovered so far in the nine months of the John Mahama government.

Domelevo described the Attorney General’s procedure in the ORAL cases as snail speed.

According to Daniel Domelevo, nine months is not a small thing.

He emphasised that before Ghanaians realised that President John Mahama would be done with the quarter.

The former Auditor-General noted that culprits and their lawyers are praying for a change in government.

Speaking in an interview, Daniel Domelevo stated, “With the briefing that the Attorney General has been giving, a lot of work is going on, but am I satisfied? No. I can’t see the end of the tunnel, not to talk of the light at the end of the tunnel”.

“The procedure currently being used is very slow. Nine months is not small. Before we realise, we’ll be done with the quarter.”

He added, “In fact, the prayer of the culprits and their lawyers is that there should be a change in government. Then you hear nolle prosequi, then our money is gone.

It begs one question: were they prepared before coming to office? Because when I look at the quantum of money we should recover and the snail speed at which we are moving, I wonder when we are going to get there,” he lamented.

He further added, “I think we have to change the speed at which we are moving and let people gain the confidence that things are moving and moving very fast. We need to change the legal framework.

If the government refuses to make these changes, it only tells me that either they are doing the same thing, they are also stealing, or they have the intention of stealing”.

Also, Kofi Bentil, a private legal practitioner, has said that the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) was overhyped and it is under-delivering.

According to Kofi Bentil, despite his criticism of ORAL performance, he maintains his support for the overall goal of fighting corruption.

Speaking on The Key Points on TV3, Saturday, September 27, Kofi Bentil stated, “ORAL was overhyped and it is under-delivering. But I support the call to fight corruption”.

It will be recalled that on February 10, 2025, the ORAL team submitted their final report to President John Mahama, who has since directed the Attorney General for further actions.

The chairman of Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed that with just 36 cases, Ghana can potentially recover $ 20.49 billion in stolen state resources.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Attorney-General, Dr Srem Sai, has reassured Ghanaians that the John Mahama-led government is working to pursue cases under the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) initiative.

According to Dr Srem Sai, the concerns about the pace of ORAL cases are legitimate, but he stressed that due process must be followed.

Speaking in an interview on TV3, Dr Srem Sai stated, “The public will say they don’t see anything, but the point I am trying to make is that the expectation is legitimate because of what we have witnessed.

The work we are doing is very thorough and vibrant. I hardly sleep, but the public has to be made aware that we just can’t bundle people based on complaints and throw them into jail”.

Dr Srem Sai also added that the legal vacation had contributed to delays.

“To the extent that for Adu Boahene, we have covered one-third of the case, if not for the legal vacation, which stops the court for two months, we would probably have concluded our case, and then the defence would be open.

We will come back in October and continue from where we left off. That is very fast if you compare it with all the other criminal trials that we are even doing here,” he noted.

Daniel Yao Domelevo, the former Auditor-General, has shockingly accused lawyer Ayikoi Otoo of submitting a fake document during the committee’s proceedings.

It will be recalled that Domelevo was a member of the committee that investigated petitions against former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo,

According to Domelevo, it is interesting that lawyer Ayikoi Otoo criticised the committee and claimed procedural breaches.

Lawyer Ayikoi Otoo served as the lead counsel for Getrude Torkornoo during the proceedings, claimed that the committee acted unfairly and relied on questionable documents in its findings.

Speaking on the issue, Daniel Yao Domelevo stated, “Mr Otoo’s attack on me, I find it very interesting. He said he provided all the evidence to me, and that I sat there and didn’t take it. But I want to put it on record that he provided us with fake evidence”.

Domelevo revealed that one of the documents in question was supposedly signed by the Judicial Secretary, claiming to appoint the Chief Justice, a process he said was crooked and raised serious concerns about authenticity.

Daniel Yao Domelovo further lamented at the slow pace of the ORAL cases, “A lot of work is going on, but am I satisfied? Meanwhile, in related news, the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Ayine, who has filed at the Supreme Court seeking a definitive interpretation on whether the removal of Gertrude Torkornoo as Chief Justice also terminates her position as a Justice of the Supreme Court.

Dr Dominic Ayine responded to former CJ Torkornoo’s High Court challenge of her removal as Supreme Court Judge; he asks that the case be stayed and referred to the Supreme Court for constitutional interpretation.

The A-G is seeking an interpretation of the removal of Gertrude Torkornoo as a Supreme Court Justice at the apex court following the former Chief Justice’s application for judicial review at the High Court, challenging the legality of her removal by President John Dramani Mahama.

Justice Torkornoo is seeking multiple declarations that the President acted outside the powers conferred by the 1992 Constitution.

Justice Torkornoo is seeking the following from the High Court:

“Declare that the President has no authority to remove a Justice of the Superior Court without adhering to the constitutionally required process.

Declare that jurisdiction to hear any removal petition against a Justice of the Superior Court lies solely with a body established under Article 146(4).

Declare that the President’s warrant of removal is “unlawful, null, void, and of no effect.”

The suit is titled The Republic v. Attorney-General, Ex Parte Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo.

Meanwhile,  Prof Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, a law professor at the University of Ghana, has said the former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has the legal right to seek reinstatement as a Supreme Court Judge.

However, the law professor noted that Gertrude Torkonoo’s return to the bench may be impractical.

According to Prof Kwadwo Appiagyei-Atua, a toxic environment has been created, with many of the decisions in Court going against those that were taken by her colleagues.

Speaking to Channel One News on Thursday, September 18, Prof. Appiagyei-Atua stated, “It spells out why there’s a need to amend Article 146, because as it is now, I see a loophole. And that loophole is that you can be a chief justice, you are removed, but you can remain as a Supreme Court judge.

In that sense, the practicality is that there has been a toxic environment created. Most of the decisions are made against her. How is she going to relate to her colleagues who made those decisions against her?”.

He added, “That is where the gap is. I think that in practical terms, it may be difficult for her to come back. But in terms of law, she has the right to go there”.

A woman in the crowd urged the man to go to Nogokpo, saying, “We have nothing to hide, this is where we are always, if you want to go there, go?”

NAIMOS storms ‘Gangway’ galamsey hideout, hundreds rounded up

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has stormed a notorious galamsey hideout named ‘Gangway’ at Aboso in the Western Region.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of Government Communication, the operation was carried out on Monday, October 5, 2025.

In a post on X, he wrote, “The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has carried out a significant operation in the Western Region, targeting notorious galamsey hideouts.

On Monday, October 5, 2025, the Task Force stormed “Gangway,” a crime-infested community in Aboso, Prestea-Huni Valley District.

-Makeshift Structures Destroyed*: Several makeshift structures serving as hideouts and drug bases were set ablaze, and galamsey equipment was destroyed.

-Hundreds Surrender: Several hundred locals, mostly galamseyers, surrendered to the Task Force. These individuals were involved in various social vices, including illegal mining, trading, and narcotics smoking, as well as gambling.

-Drugs Seized- Eleven parcels of Indian Hemp were seized, alongside other hard drugs.

– Previous Warnings Ignored: This operation follows a similar one in June 2025, where NAIMOS warned criminal gangs and galamseyers to vacate the area. Despite this, the warnings were ignored.

Additional Operations:

While en route to Gangway, the NAIMOS Task Force conducted anti-galamsey operations in the Dadwen-Domping areas of the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. These operations resulted in:

– Seizure of Equipment: 15 water pumping machines and one generator set were seized.

– *Destruction of Equipment*: Three chanfangs were destroyed, and other structures and equipment belonging to illegal miners were set ablaze.

The NAIMOS Task Force remains committed to combating illegal mining and its associated social vices in the region”.

However, some netizens have reacted to the news saying, “Strong move by NAIMOS, but it’ll only matter if it’s followed by sustained enforcement, rehabilitation, and real alternatives for those who surrendered. Otherwise, it’s just another fire that’ll burn out too soon”.

Another netizen wrote, “Boss Felix, something baffles me. So are we saying, upon all these arrests NAIMOS is doing, none of these victims can lead the security to the big men who are sponsoring these acts?”.

One more X user wrote, “Meanwhile, the person who put them there is paying them chop money if ¢50 daily aside their wages is cooling off somewhere in Accra. Next week the foreman will get a new squad to go and continue from where they left off”.

Meanwhile, the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Col. Dominic Buah, has said illegal miners are the prime enemies of the state.

He said, “Mr. President, with your permission, I would like to send this warning to illegal miners, their assigns, and financiers. They are the first or prime enemies of the state, and they will be dealt with as such. There will be no room for them to escape or to hide. NAIMOS will smoke them out very soon; there is no resting place for them,” Col. Buah said.

Col. Buah added, “They should get ready and be assured that very soon our waters will turn blue and our forests will turn green. We have already trained over 400 troops who are the first batch deployed or are under deployment to sensitive areas. We will continue to deploy more so that we will all go to bed knowing that NAIMOS is firmly on the ground and illegal mining will be a thing of the past.”

“All illegal miners, galamseyers, and financiers, beware. NAIMOS is closer to your bases, and there will be no hiding place for you”, he added.

GoldBod arrests six over illegal gold trading 

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Taskforce has arrested six individuals for engaging in illegal gold trading and refining without a licence.

Of the six, one is an American and the other is a Moroccan; the remaining four are Ghanaians.

The six suspects have been identified as Smart Philander (American), Nina Elfseky (Moroccan), and four Ghanaians: Nana Yaw Sarpong Boateng, Sowa Elisha, Evans Arhin, and Arnold Otutey.

They were apprehended at the SSNIT Emporium near Marina Mall in Accra, following weeks of surveillance.

The Gold Board revealed “the group was caught attempting to purchase and assay approximately 2.1 kilograms of gold, valued at around GHC 2.2 million, without the authorisation required under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140)”.

During the GoldBod operation, gold refining equipment was found in the possession of the American suspect, which confirms their intent to refine gold illegally within Ghana.

The six have been arraigned before the court and are facing multiple charges including “Conspiracy to engage in gold trading without a licence; Engaging in gold trading and assaying without a licence; and Attempting to refine gold illegally — offences contrary to Sections 23(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and 26(1) of the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140)”.

In related news, the GoldBod CEO, Sammy Gyamfi Esq., has announced the arrest of three individuals in connection with a gold smuggling case.

The three suspects linked to Rafmoh Gold Ltd. & NK Benark Enterprise have been accused of smuggling 100 kilograms of gold, estimated to be worth GH¢100 million, out of the country over the past two months.

It will be recalled that Yesterday, September 17, 2025, the Goldbod issued a wanted notice for two Indian nationals and two Ghanaians over their alleged involvement in illegal gold smuggling and dealing.

The Ghana Gold Board placed a GH¢1 million bounty to be awarded for any credible information which would lead to their arrest.

Sammy Gyamfi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, announced that the four are part of a group of seven individuals engaged in the illicit trade.

According to him, three of the seven suspects have been arrested and are in the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, Mr. Gyamfi stated, “We have an arrest warrant for all of them; they are wanted by the police and the GoldBod.

If you have any information about them, you can report to the nearest police station or the GoldBod head office. We have a bounty of GHC1 million on each of them”.

However, the Goldbod issued a fresh update on the GH¢1million bounty placed on four gold-smuggling suspects.

In a statement signed by Prince Kwame Minkah, Media Relations Officer, the GoldBod apologised and issued a correction after mistakenly publishing the wrong photograph of a suspect.

The statement clarified that the image that accompanied the announcement of suspect Mohammed Nandoli Rafeeq, also known as Salaam, was not accurate; however, it added that the details released about the suspect were accurate.

“The picture circulated was actually that of Mr Shamlal Ahamed, Managing Director of International Operations at Malabar Gold and Diamonds,” the statement detailed.

They formally apologise to Mr Ahamed and Malabar Gold and Diamonds for any reputational harm caused.

The Goldbod has since released the correct photograph of Mohammed Nandoli Rafeeq and also called on media houses that shared the wrong image to update their publications.

A former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, has said some teachers are suffering in schools at the hands of certain students.

According to Professor Marfo, there are no saints in the world, as everyone has a shortcoming.

Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, speaking on the viral video involving the current Assistant Headmaster of KNUST Senior High School, Charles Akwasi Aidoo, made this known.

Speaking on Oyerepa TV on October 6, 2025, Professor Marfo stated, “There is no saint in the world. Everyone has their shortcomings, and we must work to fix them.

So, this is a wake-up call to fix things. That’s why I’m saying, how old is the child? Look at the background. How old is she? How is her lifestyle? I have even heard that it was through the teacher that they sacked her boyfriend from the school, so it was essentially a punishment for him.

There are several other incidents like this, but this one just happened to be captured on video. As humans, we must know our shortcomings and work on them”, he stated.

Professor Marfo noted that, every man likes women and is a potential womaniser.

He further added, “That is why, when men say they don’t like women, I see them differently because to me… You’re not a man if you say you don’t like women because every man likes women and is a potential womaniser.

There are bigger issues that need attention. Some teachers are also suffering in schools at the hands of certain students. For instance, there was a case where a student reportedly locked a teacher in an office, demanding an affair or threatening to frame him if he refused”, he said.

Additionally, Rev Isaac Owusu, the President of, Ghana National Association of Teachers, has weighed into the brouhaha over the growing sexual misconduct in Ghana’s Senior High Schools involving teachers and students.

According to the GNAT president, teachers should stop having inappropriate sexual relationships with their students and instead focus on single, beautiful female teachers. 

The GNAT president is quoted by GHOne TV to have said, “Male teachers, we(GNAT) are pleading with you, if you want to do the ‘thing’, we have nice, beautiful female teachers who are single”.

Also, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the vice president, has condemned the growing sexual misconduct in Ghana’s Senior High Schools.

According to Prof Opoku-Agyemang, teachers being transferred after inappropriate sexual relationships between them and students is not a punishment.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang labelled Teachers involved in sexual misconduct acts as disgraceful to the noble profession of teaching.

The vice president urged teachers to embrace mentorship and lifelong learning as important elements of their professional development.

She further highlighted that the government will not waver in punishing individuals who infringe the trust placed in them by students.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang stated, “Leadership cannot ignore those teachers in positions of power who abuse our young pupils. The recent event involving one of our teachers in a management position is a case in point. As teachers, we must always remember that we are placed in a position of trust, protection, and empathy.

“The power given to us is to facilitate learning. We will not wait to apply sanctions to those who violate that trust”.

“Remember, transfers are not punishment and so they should never be used against those who abuse our children, betray their trust, and those who disgrace our profession.”

“The government has also decided to revive PTAs to encourage broader participation in forming our young learners,” she added.

Her comments follow the Ghana Education Service (GES) interdiction of yet another teacher for alleged sexual misconduct at the Okadjakrom Senior High Technical School in the Jasikan Municipality of the Oti Region.

Mr Mfo Richard Tibetor has been interdicted by the GES for alleged sexual misconduct involving a female student.

Furthermore, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has removed Charles Akwasi Aidoo, Assistant Headmaster (Academic) of KNUST Senior High School, after a viral video showed him in a compromised position with a female student.

According to the GES, Mr Charles Akwasi Aidoo has been barred from entering the school premises while investigations are ongoing.

The former majority leader quizzed how Dr Yaw Adutwum, who was a cabinet member, would speak, condemning Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s decision to box all appointees into his apology.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated, “The way to go is to own up to certain things and move. You remember not too long ago, Dr Bawumia at a forum even offered an apology that we did our best, but given the circumstances that eschew Post-COVID-19, a few things were done perhaps upon reflection, we should have done it better.

For that reason, I apologise for the things that went wrong. We are not angels; we have learnt useful lessons going forward, and we will do much better. Even some within the party took him on, some said if you are apologising, apologies on your part don’t include me. I didn’t do anything wrong”.

He added, “How can somebody speak like that? You are a cabinet minister. Decisions are taken at the cabinet level, a collective decision that comes out. And then we have somebody say we didn’t get everything right, we apologise for the things we didn’t get right, and as a former cabinet minister, you say As for you, you are not part of it”.

It will be recalled, Dr Yaw Adutwum believes that he owes the people of Ghana no apology because he excelled at the responsibility as the Minister of Education under former President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking in an interview, Dr Yaw Adutwum stated, “I am not a part of the apology. I came to the education sector, and many have said that if every other minister had worked like me…If you are working, you will certainly not please everyone. However, as the vice president who led the economic management team, if he wants to apologise, he should focus on the failed economy under him.

In education, we did not fail the people of Ghana. Mo Ibrahim ranked us second. The people of Ghana are in awe of what I did in the sector. People see me and hail me for the work that I did for the sector, and so I owe no apology,” he said.

“I am saying that the former vice president must own up and apologise for failing the sector that he led, and not just issue apologies en bloc”, he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for the way they led and governed the country.

The former vice president was speaking to some party faithful in the Ashanti Region as part of his regional tour of uniting and re-energising the base of the party.

Dr Bawumia, who did not exempt himself from the mistakes of the previous government, pleaded for forgiveness on behalf of all those who were part of the erstwhile Akufo-Addo-led government.

“After the 2024 elections, we have done our research. We know the NPP government and the party made a lot of mistakes in governance. There were things we needed to do which we didn’t, and others we did that, if we had had the benefit of background, we would not have done them,” he said.

He stressed that the blame was not his alone but a collective responsibility of the party’s leadership. “We are all to be blamed – Vice President, Ministers, MPs, Board Chairmen, appointees. We have all made mistakes, and please forgive us. We’re sorry. We have learned our lessons,” he added.

Dr Bawumia assured delegates that, if given the mandate as flagbearer and subsequently elected President, he would ensure that the past would not be repeated.

“If, by the grace of God, you make me the flagbearer and I become the President, these will not happen again. They will not happen again,” he pledged.

“Kennedy Agyapong did not sponsor my campaign” – Kwame A-Plus replies Abronye

Kwame Asare Obeng, commonly known as Kwame A-Plus, the member of parliament for Gomoa Central, has replied to Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, over claims he made against him.

Abronye had claimed former Assin Central MP and flagbearer hopeful, Kennedy Agyapong, sold the NPP’s seat to Kwame A-Plus.

According to Kwame A-Plus, Kennedy Agyapong did not sponsor his campaign.

The Gomoa Central lawmaker revealed that he rather mobilise funds to support Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential campaign.

Kwame A-Plus is quoted by UTV to have said, “Kennedy Agyapong did not sponsor my campaign; rather, I was the one who mobilised funds to support his presidential campaign”.

His comments come after Abronye accused Kennedy Agyapong of undermining NPP cohesion.

Speaking on Ohia TV, Abronye stated, “The 2023 disciplinary report recommends that Kennedy Agyapong should be sacked from the NPP because he is damaging the party and engaging in anti-party behaviour”.

“Justin Kodua is the one saving him. Assin Dompo, the destroyer who sold the NPP’s seat to A Plus… The report is with Justin Kodua, and he is sitting on it. He is the only person who knows why he is keeping it, and there will be a time when we will ask him about it.

“The party has structures, so why would he keep the report to himself instead of laying it before the national executives or council? The report detailed all of Agyapong’s anti-party conduct,” Abronye DC added.

On Tuesday, September 30, Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP, revealed he is fully prepared to face the committee and defend his actions.

He called for a live broadcast as he agreed to face the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Disciplinary Committee following his referral for alleged misconduct.

Abronye revealed he is prepared to provide evidence of Kennedy Agyapong’s anti-Christ actions and inactions.

“I hereby write to indicate my full preparedness and willingness to appear before the Committee to comprehensively lay bare and substantiate the anti-Christ actions and inactions of Hon. Kennedy Agyapong,” Abronye stated.

Abronye further propose that the sittings of the committee be conducted openly and broadcast live so the rank and file of the NPP may have the opportunity to witness Kennedy Agyapong’s antichrist posture and conduct.

Abronye’s statement comes after Justin Kodua Frimpong, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), referred him to the party’s disciplinary committee.

According to the statement issued by Justin Kodua, he has petitioned the National Disciplinary Committee of the NPP regarding Abronye’s conduct.

Justin Kodua noted that Abronye DC, the NPP Bono regional chairman, was hurting the party’s image and insulting party members by making baseless accusations against him.

Wontumi slapped with six counts over galamsey

Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been charged alongside two others in connection with galamsey activities allegedly carried out by his Akonta Mining Limited.

Wontumi has been charged alongside Kwame Antwi and Akonta Mining Company Limited (Wontumi’s firm).

The second accused person, Kwame Antwi, is currently on the run.

According to court documents, Chairman Wontumi have been slapped with six counts, including,  “Assignment of mineral rights without approval, Assignment of mineral rights without approval, Corporate liability for unauthorised assignment, Purposely facilitating unlicensed mining, Purposely facilitating unlicensed mining, and Corporate facilitation of unlicensed mining”.

Wontumi and the two other charges stem from alleged unauthorised mining activities at Samreboi in the Western Region.

The charge sheet detailed that an operation by state security on April 26, 2025, led to the arrest of Michael Ayisi Gyedu and 28 on the Akonta Mining concession.

Mr Gyedu, during interrogation, fingered one Henry Okum as the one who gave him authorisation to supervise mining activities on the land.

According to the state, Henry Okum, during interrogation, admitted to seeking and receiving permission from Chairman Wontumi to mine within the Samreboi concession.

Investigators alleged that Wontumi granted permission without first obtaining the legally required approval from the Minister, as mandated by the laws.

Wontumi, yesterday, October 6, 2025, was granted bail following his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

Chairman Wontumi was granted a GH¢1 million bail with two sureties, which he has met successfully.

Wontumi reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 6, 2025, after his lawyer had confirmed they would be there at 10:00 am.

He was accompanied by his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi.

Andy Appiah Kubi had earlier stated that the Attorney General’s warning is unnecessary as Wontumi has cooperated with investigators.

Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, October 5, Chairman Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah Kubi, stated, “We have been asked to appear at the police CID in Accra, which we are ready for, and we will be there at 10 am at the police CID headquarters.

“This announcement by the Attorney General surprises me. I said, we respect the invitation and we will honour it, but I think the warning that followed that announcement was unnecessary,” he said, adding We are not in any way going to disrespect the invitation.”

Andy Appiah-Kubi, speaking after the CID visit, confirmed that the charge against Wontumi involves mining without a license and revealed that the matter would be fully addressed in court.

He, however, maintained his client’s innocence.

“As you have seen, we will go to court, and that is where the decision will be taken. We are not to maintain innocence, but we are allowed to proceed and then present our defence,” Andy Appiah-Kubi stated.

It will be recalled that on April 21 2025, the John Mahama government formally revoked  Chairman Wontumi’s Akonta Mining license.

Wontumi’s Akonta Mining has been accused of galamsey operations within the Aboi and Tano Nimiri Forest Reserves in the Western North Region.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, revealed the case was delayed because crucial dockets were concealed under the previous Akufo-Addo Bawumia administration.

Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the former Majority Leader, has urged his fellow NPP members to acknowledge the mistakes made during their time in power, apologise and move on.

Also, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu noted that external and domestic challenges contributed to the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He added, “I can relate to the findings that led to our loss. The Ashanti regional chapter of the enquiry cited four main issues -one being external factors, some strong winds that blew from outside and hit us unprepared. Yes, it affected the economy. But basically attributable to COVID-19, the Russia-Ukraine war, these are force majeures we couldn’t control; they hit us, they had repercussions on us on the economy in particular, especially the meltdown that we experienced.

He emphasised, “The former President [Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo] did so well to protect livelihoods and lives. But it had a toll on the country’s finances, and going forward, it ignited some heat in the system. And then we had to go to the IMF for a bailout.”

He stressed, “Some of the things that we had not intended to do, the domestic debt exchange programme, which affected over 800,000 people. They had families, and so, they were pressed. Then we had other matters, including, in particular, the Russia-Ukraine war, which escalated the cost of many items. Even fertilisers were affected.

“Then we had issues with governance. Post-COVID-19, our backs were to the wall. We had to put the brakes on development projects that affected the lubrication of the system.”

Meanwhile, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said Ghana’s debt restructuring under his government shattered lives.

Akufo-Addo revealed that the debt restructuring deeply troubled him and still does.

According to Akufo-Addo, the debt restructuring under the G20 Common Framework was the most painful chapter of his presidency.

Speaking at the AU-EU High-Level Seminar in Brussels on Thursday, October 2, 2025, on the eve of the AU-EU Summit, Akufo-Addo stated, “I witnessed the suffocating grip of debt on our economy and on our citizens. This deeply troubled me and still does”.

“The most painful part was the impact on ordinary people. Pensioners, young people, and small investors saw their lives and livelihoods shattered,” he said.

An alarming video has surfaced of a young boy, who is barely ten years old, operating an excavator at a galamsey site.  

According to reports, the young boy in the video was undergoing training in excavator operations at an illegal mining site.

In the viral video, the young boy was spotted alone in an excavator, displaying his skills as he manipulates the earth-moving equipment without the help of any elderly person.

The video has left many Ghanaians in shock, who reacted to the video saying, “Under the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), this constitutes exploitative labour, and those who engaged with the child and his parents should be arrested. It is a form of suicidal indoctrination into criminality and early criminal exposure. There is no justification for this”.

“The training aspect of the young champ is very good, but the purpose of the excavation is wrongful if only it is wrongful Galamsay. Is the appropriate small-scale mining termed Galamsay? Even if you acquire the necessary documentation and genuinely follow protocols and ethics?”, a netizen added.

One netizen wrote, “Teach them young and they will know more when they grow. I would rather put my son in this situation than let him go to school .. and later come do protocol before he works for the government as a slave”.

Additionally, a netizen added, “If not for this galamsey crisis in the country, like to me, this is a very good example at the boys’ exposure in sure”.

“Ghana is finished, that is child abuse, and he must face the law”, one more netizen wrote.

Also, an illegal miner has boldly declared that no amount of destruction caused by the anti-galamsey task force to destroy their machine will deter them from illegal mining.

The illegal miner made this declaration while his colleague was assembling new equipment to continue their illegal mining operation despite an earlier raid by anti-galamsey forces.

Speaking in a viral video, the illegal miner stated, “The soldiers have come to our sites and they have destroyed our machines, so we have gone for a new one. If you burn it ten times, we will buy new machines ten times.

Do you know the price? It is 9000, and within five days, we can buy a new one. Don’t worry yourself, the galamsey cannot be stopped. Tell Mahama to give us machines so that we can destroy the land well. We are destroying the land. Look, that is someone’s home.

The leaders, what have they done for us? This is not an excavator that we will say we don’t have the money to buy. Within five days, you will get the money to buy a new one”.

Meanwhile, Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, has commended the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Police Command for arresting 12 persons for the destruction of railway lines along the Akyim-Bonsawere stretch.

The Takoradi-Nsuta Railway lines once facilitated the haulage of tonnes of manganese in the Western Region.

The destruction, spanning several meters, has caused widespread public outrage, with many netizens calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

The damage follows years of deterioration and abandonment of the railway infrastructure.

With the absence of active railway operations, galamseyers seize the opportunity to encroach on the area in search of gold.

Speaking to the media, Joseph Nelson demanded the prosecution of the 12 arrested individuals and also sustained monitoring of the railway.

“This is a threat not only to national assets but also to our very existence since the environment is constantly being polluted, a threat to water supply, forest reserves, water bodies, among others,” he said.

The Regional Minister urged the police to step up surveillance saying, “From all indications, this mining did not happen in a day; it’s been here for weeks or months.”

NMCG issues stern warning to nurses and midwives against unprofessional conduct on social media

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana (NMCG) has warned nurses and midwives practitioners against unprofessional behaviour on social media.

The Council expressed concern over videos showing misuse of uniforms, use of offensive language, and sharing of misleading health information.

It reminded practitioners that such actions breach the Code of Ethics and tarnish the profession’s image.

According to the Council, the nurses and midwives who fail to comply with this directive will face the application of appropriate sanctions.

The Council warned that offenders risk suspension or revocation of their licenses.

A statement dated October 6 and signed by the Registrar, Mrs Philomena Wooley, read, “The attention of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana has been drawn to a series of disturbing social media publications and videos involving Trainees, Nurses Assistants, Nurses and Midwives.

These publications and videos depict conduct that is grossly unprofessional and in direct contravention of the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct governing the Nursing and Midwifery professions”.

“The Council is particularly concerned about the misuse of the Nursing and Midwifery uniform in the creation of social media content that purports to educate the public or fellow Practitioners without due authorization; The use of abusive, derogatory and offensive language directed at Leadership and other Stakeholders; The dissemination of misleading or unverified health information under the guise of professional advice,” the Registrar explained.

The statement added, “all Students and Practitioners that the Nursing and Midwifery professions are grounded in the principles of integrity, respect, professionalism and ethical responsibility. Any conduct that undermines these values not only tarnishes the image of the profession but also erodes public trust in the healthcare system”.

“Consequently, no individual or group is permitted to provide public education or professional guidance under the guise of the Council without prior approval or accreditation.

All Students and Practitioners are hereby cautioned to desist from engaging in any form of unprofessional conduct, particularly on social media platforms. The Council will not hesitate to invoke the necessary disciplinary measures, including suspension or revocation of licenses, against any individual found culpable of breaching the professional Code of Conduct,” it concluded.

In related news, the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives, on Thursday, October 2, 2025, staged a protest to demand their salary arrears owed by the government.

According to the nurses and midwives, about 7,000 of them have been working without salaries for the past nine to 10 months.

Meanwhile, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, the deputy finance minister, has told the Nurses and midwives that their salary arrears will be captured in the next budget.

He expressed gratitude to the nurses and midwives for their service and apologised for the delay.

“I had no option but to encourage my people that we were winning this election, and that’s why I made the statement that if we lost, I would resign. I, however, apologise to Ghanaians for my resignation comment; I went too far,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Michael Okyere Baafi has revealed he would not seek re-election in 2028 for the New Juaben South seat.

The lawmaker alluded to the worrying state of Ghana’s politics as his main reason not to seek re-election in the 2028 elections.

Speaking in an interview on AsaasePa FM on September 2, 2025, Okyere Baafi stated, “If this is how our politics is turning, then the world is becoming scarier. That’s why some of us, and I, have said that after this term, I won’t seek re-election in 2028”.

He added, “We did all the work and campaigning, and we were confident of winning the election. But the NDC’s strategy was to buy votes. Almost every voter who wanted money was paid about GH¢500-1,000 by the NDC.

They distributed items such as hair dryers, spraying machines and other things. Given the work we put in, there was no way we should have lost. The NDC even had a table with thugs protecting the table, and not even the police could intervene”, he added.

“The government should come up with a plan that will help the illegal miners not to destroy the land and the water bodies, but it will help to improve the mining it self , because galamsey is unstoppable”, a netizen added.

Another Ghanaian wrote, “The security agencies & the gov’t don’t have the willingness to fight galamsey because if they did, a lot of strategic interventions would have been put in place, like passing laws to suit the purpose of the arrest of chiefs, land owners and elders of galamsey communities”.

“In your mind, you will be sitting in your city, thinking there is a big man sponsoring them. No, they are areas, boys doing their own thing. And it is the same in most mining communities, they can afford to hire those excavators and do whatever they want without the help of any big man”, one more Ghanaian noted.

One more netizen added, “If these people are serious in fighting this suicidal behaviour of galamsey, then they should as well put some controls on the importation of these machines into the country. Just as Mahama is willing to deal with shippers who’ll violate rules governing importation of excavators”.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the National Security Council believes the galamsey fight can be won without a state of emergency.

According to John Mahama, the National Security Council has not advised him on a declaration of a state of emergency, and once they do, he will not hesitate to declare it.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement on illegal mining in Accra, the President stated, “Yes, I have the power to do it. But the president acts not only on his authority but also on the advice of the National Security Council…as of now, the National Security Council believes that we can win the fight against galamsey without a state of emergency”.

The day they advise me otherwise — that now we need a state of emergency — I will not hesitate in declaring it,” he added.

Mahama added, “We still believe we have the power to win this fight”.

Also, the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Col. Dominic Buah, has said illegal miners are the prime enemies of the state.

He said, “Mr. President, with your permission, I would like to send this warning to illegal miners, their assigns, and financiers. They are the first or prime enemies of the state, and they will be dealt with as such. There will be no room for them to escape or to hide. NAIMOS will smoke them out very soon; there is no resting place for them,” Col. Buah said.

Col. Buah added, “They should get ready and be assured that very soon our waters will turn blue and our forests will turn green. We have already trained over 400 troops who are the first batch deployed or are under deployment to sensitive areas. We will continue to deploy more so that we will all go to bed knowing that NAIMOS is firmly on the ground and illegal mining will be a thing of the past.”

“All illegal miners, galamseyers, and financiers, beware. NAIMOS is closer to your bases, and there will be no hiding place for you”, he added.

Additionally, Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, has revealed that the government will repeal the infamous Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which allows mining in forest reserves.

According to the Attorney General, LI 2505 will be laid in Parliament to repeal infamous LI 2462.

Speaking during the stakeholder engagement on illegal mining assembled by President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Friday, October 3, Dr Ayine stated, “We have prepared an instrument that is LI 2505 in my office, and that will be laid in Parliament on the 14th of October”.

“The Minister and I have agreed that on the 14th of October, when Parliament resumes, we will lay that instrument to revoke the famous LI 2462,” he added.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the former Majority Leader, has refuted claims that religion or ethnicity played a role in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in 2024.

The former majority leader highlighted that no data gathered after the 2024 general elections cites religion or ethnicity to be the cause of the NPP’s defeat.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained, “The enquiry we did in the Ashanti region did not produce that; it is not one of the factors”.

“In fact, those two questions, ethnicity and religion, were asked of the people everywhere in the Ashanti region, and the Oquaye committee also asked similar questions — the group of professors asked. The conclusions don’t support this at all. And yet, people are trying to inject that into that.”

“Even though the Vice President and the President don’t share responsibility, the presidency encapsulates the two, so you cannot extricate yourself, especially when you sit in cabinet meetings,” he said.

When asked whether Dr Bawumia’s leadership of the Economic Management Team (EMT) made him a central figure in the economic challenges.

According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Dr Bawumia’s Economic Management Team function was largely advisory.

He added, “That is a reality. But nobody should forget that executive authority is vested in one person. That is not to extricate Dr Bawumia from every blame. The Economic Management Team he headed, their role was only advisory.”

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu further emphasised that Dr Bawumia is not solely to blame for NPP’s 2024 defeat.

He explained, “Even though the Vice President and the President don’t share responsibility, the presidency encapsulates the two, so you cannot extricate yourself, especially when you sit in cabinet meetings”.

“That is a reality. But nobody should forget that executive authority is vested in one person. That is not to extricate Dr Bawumia from every blame. The Economic Management Team he headed, their role was only advisory,” he stated.

He stressed, “Do they force their observations on the President? I’m saying that in the situation, you can’t whitewash Dr. Bawumia and extricate him from any of the things that people considered not good — the policies and programmes people think were not very good. You cannot extricate him completely.”

Meanwhile, Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has rejected claims that the party’s electoral loss was due to his religion or ethnicity.

According to Bawumia, he told former president Akufo-Addo he would not run again if Prof Mike Ocquaye’s report attributed the party’s defeat to me.

Dr Bawumia stressed that if the report had held him responsible for the defeat, he would have prioritised the party’s interests over his personal ambitions.

Speaking to delegates at Abuakwa on Saturday, September 13, 2025, Dr Bawumia detailed, “Before the Ocquaye report came out, I had a meeting with Akufo-Addo and others. We were having a discussion about the reasons why we lost the 2024 election.

“I told Akufo-Addo that if the findings of the Ocquaye report indicate that because I’m a Muslim or because or I’m a Mamprusi-Kusasi, we lost the election, I will step down and not contest anymore. This is what I told Akufo-Addo. Because I will not choose my interest over the party’s interest. The party’s interest must always be ahead of me.

“I told Akufo-Addo that because of the party, I will sacrifice any ambition, including the fact that if I contest, we will lose. But when the Ocquaye report, Ashanti report and Konrad Adenauer Foundation report came out, all of them pointed to the same conclusion – religion, tribe was not a factor in the 2024 election,” Dr Bawumia added.

Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe, the CEO of the National Petroleum Authority, has blown an alarm on the devastation caused by the illegal mining menace (galamsey).

According to Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe, Ghana imported water into the country worth almost 11 million in 2023.

Speaking on Accra-based Okay FM, Edudzi Tamakloe asked the show host, “Do you know that in 2023, imported water alone into Ghana cost almost 11 million dollars?”

He further urged called on chiefs and other opinion leaders to join the fight against the galamsey menace.

Meanwhile, Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has said Ghana will need US$200,000 to pilot nano nano-liquid technological solution to reverse the devastation caused by illegal mining (galamsey).

According to the Executive Director EPA, the dechemicalization solution, containing a copper-based ‘nano liquid,’ has been laboratory-tested and proven effective in purifying heavily contaminated rivers.

She revealed the EPA is looking at various options, including membrane-based purification.

Speaking on JOYNEWS The Probe, October 5, Prof. Nana Ama Browne Klutse explained, “I want to tell my fellow Ghanaians that there is still hope, because we are in a technology age”.

“Yes, there’s a nano liquid that is copper-based that can be used. That’s just one”.

She added, “We have tried this, which has been tested in Greece. I have seen for myself. We have done the test in the lab for the EPA and advised the government on this; we have tested it, and it works, and it’s doable.”

“To do pilots to show to Ghanaians and even the presidents that this is doable. We need 200,000 USD if I get it today, we will do the pilot for every Ghanaian to see that with the flowing river, this particular technology can be used.”

“We are looking at all of the options, and we will have to decide on the one that is more affordable, not just cheap affordable, because it’s effective and also cost-effective”, Prof Nana Ama Browne Klutse added.

Also, a Toxicologist, Yakubu Adam, has issued a blunt warning that no amount of cooking or seasoning can destroy mercury, a heavy metal found in foodstuffs.

The toxicologist revealed that mercury, which is a heavy metal, has a lifespan of 880 years.

Toxicologist Yakubu Adam directly linked this immutable fact to the recent cases of food poisoning.

He argued that without a decisive end to illegal mining (galamsey), there is no viable solution to the contamination of the food supply.

Speaking on TV3 New Day, Toxicologist Yakubu Adam explained, “When it comes to the mercury that we are talking about, it is a heavy metal and it is also non-biodegradable, meaning it can never be destroyed when it gets into the environment, it stays in the environment.

One thing about this mercury is that if you end up taking it in your body, and you pass on through the natural process when they bury you inside the soil, you go with the mercury in your grave, so this mercury can stay in the environment for about 880 years without being destroyed, and there is nothing that can destroy it.

No amount of heat, no amount of salt, no amount of whatever you think can. You know this is not a bacterial infection or a fungal infection. They are not caused by parasites; this is heavy metals”.

He added, “So, salt water, heating, and everything can never break down this mercury in our food. When it gets into our food, it stays in our food, and we end up consuming it, and it gets into our bodies, and there are a lot of health implications”.

When it gets to our body, the major depositing part is our brain. When it gets there, it can stay in our brain for almost 20 years and can lead to neurological or neuroregenerative problems”.

The Toxicologist added that the only way to stop the exposure is to stop illegal mining (galamsey) or to stop the use of mercury in mining processes.

Police arrest 12 galamseyers for destroying Takoradi-Nsuta railway line

Joseph Nelson, the Western Regional Minister, has commended the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Police Command for arresting 12 persons for the destruction of railway lines along the Akyim-Bonsawere stretch.

The Takoradi-Nsuta Railway lines once facilitated the haulage of tonnes of manganese in the Western Region.

The destruction, spanning several meters, has caused widespread public outrage, with many netizens calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

The damage follows years of deterioration and abandonment of the railway infrastructure.

With the absence of active railway operations, galamseyers seize the opportunity to encroach on the area in search of gold.

The Minister’s visit follows a viral video showing the destruction of the railway lines along the Akyim-Bonsawere stretch.

Speaking to the media, Joseph Nelson demanded the prosecution of the 12 arrested individuals and also sustained monitoring of the railway.

“This is a threat not only to national assets but also to our very existence since the environment is constantly being polluted, a threat to water supply, forest reserves, water bodies, among others,” he said.

The Regional Minister urged the police to step up surveillance saying, “From all indications, this mining did not happen in a day; it’s been here for weeks or months.”

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the National Security Council believes the galamsey fight can be won without a state of emergency.

According to John Mahama, the National Security Council has not advised him on a declaration of a state of emergency, and once they do, he will not hesitate to declare it.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement on illegal mining in Accra, the President stated, “Yes, I have the power to do it. But the president acts not only on his authority but also on the advice of the National Security Council…as of now, the National Security Council believes that we can win the fight against galamsey without a state of emergency”.

The day they advise me otherwise — that now we need a state of emergency — I will not hesitate in declaring it,” he added.

Mahama added, “We still believe we have the power to win this fight”.

Also, the Director of Operations of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), Col. Dominic Buah, has said illegal miners are the prime enemies of the state.

He said, “Mr. President, with your permission, I would like to send this warning to illegal miners, their assigns, and financiers. They are the first or prime enemies of the state, and they will be dealt with as such. There will be no room for them to escape or to hide. NAIMOS will smoke them out very soon; there is no resting place for them,” Col. Buah said.

Col. Buah added, “They should get ready and be assured that very soon our waters will turn blue and our forests will turn green. We have already trained over 400 troops who are the first batch deployed or are under deployment to sensitive areas. We will continue to deploy more so that we will all go to bed knowing that NAIMOS is firmly on the ground and illegal mining will be a thing of the past.”

“All illegal miners, galamseyers, and financiers, beware. NAIMOS is closer to your bases, and there will be no hiding place for you”, he added.

Additionally, Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, has revealed that the government will repeal the infamous Legislative Instrument (LI) 2462, which allows mining in forest reserves.

According to the Attorney General, LI 2505 will be laid in Parliament to repeal infamous LI 2462.
