Joseph Akasake Abaa, the Bongo District Chief Executive (DCE)

The Bongo District Chief Executive (DCE), Joseph Akasake Abaa, has died.

Reports suggest that the Bongo DCE died after a short illness at the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga on Sunday, February 22, 2026.

The Bongo Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Tahiru Aberinga, verified the news in an interview.

He described Joseph Akasake Abaaas death as shocking and unexpected.

Joseph Akasake Abaaas was nominated by John Mahama to become the Bongo DCE and was confirmed by members of the Bongo District Assembly in April 2025.

The late Bongo DCE has also served the people of Zorko-Goo-Awaah as an Assembly Member for three consecutive terms and also held several positions within the NDC, including Bongo Constituency Youth Organiser and later Constituency Secretary in 2022.

The Bongo DCE death follows, Naser Toure Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, who died last month.

Reports suggest the NDC MP passed away at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a period of illness.

According to multiple sources, Naser Toure Mahama is said to have died on Sunday, January 4, 2026, in the afternoon.

The late Naser Toure Mahama was a fourth-term MP and held several key roles in Parliament.

He served as Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee, and a member on the Roads and Transport Committee, the House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee.

Richard Acheampong, the Second Deputy Majority Whip, has revealed that the late Ayawaso East is expected to be laid to rest today in accordance with Muslim tradition at his residence in Nima, Accra.

In other news, the Assembly Member for the Agogo Apentenyinase Electoral Area, Kwabena Osei, has died.

Reports suggest that the Assembly Member for the Agogo Apentenyinase Electoral Area in the Asante Akyem North Municipality in the Ashanti Region died by suicide.

According to reports, the Agogo Assembly Member was found hanging from the ceiling of his home on Wednesday, January 7, at around 9:00 p.m.

The Presiding Member for the Asante Akyem North Municipality, Frank Gyamfi cornfirmed the news.

He described Kwabena Osei the Agogo Assembly Member as a young and promising leader.

The Presiding Member revealed he had spoken to Kwabena Osei on private issues on Sunday before the incident.

Frank Gyamfi stated, “I received a message from some of my colleagues that one of our assembly members, Kwabena Osei, is no more. I was shocked when I heard of his demise because I had spoken with him on Sunday.

“They are saying it is a suicide, but whether he committed it himself or it was done by somebody else, we cannot confirm. I do not want to preempt what the police will uncover, but he had been hanged,” he said.
