An inmate of the Winneba Local Prison, Maxwell Oppong, has disclosed that being sentenced to prison has really helped him.
According to the 29-year-old, prison has been a blessing in disguise, helping him change his life.
He stressed that if not for God bringing him to prison, he would have ended dead or living a miserable life, adding that prison has helped him stop stealing.
Speaking in an interview with the Crime Check Foundation, he stated, “I went to steal a man’s phone in Ajumako. It was an Itel phone. I was with a friend at the time who showed me the phone, and I took it.
“After we stole it, people realised we were the only ones around, so they chased us, beat us, and sent us to the police station. My friend was given a six-month jail term, but I was sentenced to two years and six months”.
He added, “If not for God bringing me to prison, I wouldn’t have been able to stop those things. Coming here has really helped me”.
“Maybe I would have been dead or living a miserable life by now. In prison, you can’t insult anyone; there is so much discipline. I have learned a lot here, and when I go out, I will use this training to live a better life,” he said.
In related prison news, a video has surfaced on social media of an inmate jailed for ten years over a bag of cement amid the brouhaha surrounding the reduced sentence of evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Agradaa.
According to the inmate in the viral video, who has been identified as Ahmed he attempted to steal a bag of cement from his master who is a mason to sell and he got caught.
Speaking on Crime Check TV, when asked what he was doing in Prison Ahmed stated, “ I stole my master’s cement, and I ended up in jail”.
I have been working with him, and I was going to steal it in the evening when someone caught me. It was one bag, and I was going to sell it for either 70 cedis or 80 cedis”.
The inmate further accused his former master of not paying him well when they used to work together. He was a mason, and I was a labourer.
The video has surfaced at a time, some Ghanaian legal practitioners are mounting pressure on the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, to appeal evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Agradaa, reduced jail term by the Amasaman High Court.
Meanwhile, last year there were emotional scenes at the Kumasi Central Prison as inmates granted a presidential amnesty by John Dramani Mahama reunited with their families.
In the viral short video, the Kumasi Central Prison inmates granted amnesty were captured visibly emotional as they waited patiently to be reunited with their families.
The former inmates were later met at the gate of the Kumasi Central Prison by their families, embracing them and sharing passionate moments.
