Ghana receives 100 new buses

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has announced that Ghana has received 100 new 29-seater buses in government efforts to tackle recent public transport challenges.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the 100 new buses form part of a total of 300 procured by the government, which is aimed at improving transport services and reducing pressure on commuters.

In a post on Sunday, April 5, 2026, on X, Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated, “In the meantime, 100  29-seater buses have arrived in the country to ease recent road transport challenges. They form part of 300 procured for the purpose.

Another batch of 100 will arrive in August, with the last batch of 100 arriving in November”.

However, in early 2026, a video surfaced of the Aayalolo BRT buses left to rot amid the ongoing public transportation crisis in Accra.

In the viral video, the Aayalolo BRT buses have been left abandoned at the  Achimota New Station Aayalolo yard, rusting away.

TV3’s Christian Yalley in the viral video narrated that some of the Aayalolo BRT buses’ tyres have been removed, and are just stationary, adding that some of the buses are entirely grounded.

He highlighted that they were not allowed to go and film inside the buses to see the exact defect of the buses, adding that the buses have been grounded for years.

In related news, Awudu Dawuda, the Acting Managing Director of the Greater Accra Passenger Transport Executive (GAPTE), has revealed that only 80 out of the 245 Ayalolo buses procured by the government in 2016 are currently operating in Accra.

He explained that when he took over, 60 of the buses were packed because they were broken down, adding that they were repaired to get them back on the road.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Awudu Dawuda stated, “When it comes to urban mobility, we are all aware that it is important for the growth of any economy, especially when we are seeking to get more buses into the system”.

“When I took over, we were left with only 80 buses out of the 245 buses that the government procured in 2016. The buses were procured to operate within Accra alone, but 60 were taken to Kumasi, 10 to Takoradi, and another 10 to Tamale at the behest of the then Ministry of Transport,” he explained.

He added, “When I took over, I wrote to the people in charge of the buses in Kumasi, and approval has been granted for us to add the 60 buses there to the ones we have in Accra”.

“Close to 60 of the buses were packed because they were broken down. What we did was to repair them through our own means to get them back on the road,” he added.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the news stated, “Please, why change the brand again? Pretty JAK started with many cars, including some double-decker buses. It didn’t last; he later turned to Neoplan buses, of which the old ones that they started with are still running. Prz Mills brought Tata buses, it didn’t last, Prz Mahama”.

“MMT, it will end up being run down and sold for cheap to cronies. MMT is incapable of managing transport business Truth be told,” a netizen added.

“Meanwhile, we have a lot of parked Ayalolo and Metro-Mass buses that are spoiled but just need maintenance, but yeah, we should bring in new ones, mo nyinaa motwaaaaaasidi kraaaaa”, a netizen added.

A netizen added, “The transport challenges aren’t only the unavailability of buses but rather bad road conditions. No matter the number of buses you procure, if the roads are still bad, ETA will be longer than usual, and there will still be congestion!”

A X user stated, “If these buses come without the manufacturing company coming to set up and maintain workshops in the country to train Ghanaians and supply spare parts, in no time they will be sold as scraps”.

“Procurement chop chop nkoaa na aka mu in that afuom. Ghana should be producing buses by now, but here we are. Metro Mass, Aayalolo, EV buses and now this! What are you going to call this one? Jokers!”, an X user alleged.

A netizen added, “Look at the crippling road congestion on our streets. We are desperately seeking international spotlight and engaging in battles bigger than ourselves, yet we cannot even develop our nation. Equal distribution of resources, fixing our crumbling infrastructure and ultramodern roads”.

One last netizen added, “That’s all they know, PROCUREMENT. Most of these buses will be auctioned by Dec. 2028  at ridiculously low prices to party faithfuls because there’s no proper plan for their operation and maintenance. Won’t be surprised if they were sole-sourced or through restrictive tendering”.
