Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader in Parliament, has said Ghanaians are calling for President John Dramani Mahama to serve a third term due to his excellent performance so far in government.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on December 19, 2025, Mahama Ayariga noted that Ghanaians will be the ultimate deciders of the future of this country.
The Majority Leader, in his concluding statement as Parliament rises, stated, “I know that due to the very excellent performance so far of John Dramani Mahama, Ghanaians are asking him to seek a third term. I know that because I read on social media, I listen to conversations, and Ghanaians believe that as a result of the good deeds of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, they don’t want him to leave the presidency”.
“They believe that a third term is possible, and they are demanding a third term, but John Dramani Mahama has not given any indication that he wants to go for a third term. I have always said that Ghanaians will be the ultimate deciders of the future of this country,” he continued.
He recalled, “Mr Speaker, why do I say that? Next to us in Côte d’Ivoire, the opposition leaders came to me when I was in the ECOWAS parliament and complained that the president there wanted to go for a third term and they were calling on us in West Africa to support them to oppose and prevent the president from going for a third term”.
“So, I asked them, the president who is seeking for a third term, is he going to put a ballot box in front of the citizens and ask them to vote for him to go for a third term, or is he going to wake up early morning and announce that he is continuing for a third term? And they said there will be an election to determine whether or not he should go for a third term. I said go and fight him at that election”, the Majority leader noted.
Mahama Ayariga added, “Mr Speaker, that is why I say that ultimately it will be the constitution, the institutions and the citizens of Ghana who will determine the future of our country. Mr Speaker, your guidance and leadership have ensured that our legislative process, though often cumbersome, was conducted within the bounds of parliamentary decorum and democratic responsibility”.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has reiterated the party’s position, dismissing claims of a third-term agenda for President John Dramani Mahama.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, December 16, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey highlighted that the NDC is committed to Ghana’s constitutional order and democratic principles.
The NDC General Secretary stated, “First and foremost, you must appreciate that all over sub-Saharan Africa, if there is one country that has been able to provide the model that continues to be an inspiration in terms of democratic transition, it is Ghana”.
“We at no point should ever encourage a situation where there is a disruption in our constitutional stipulations. The president has spoken about that, and clearly he did well because he didn’t want to allow such conversations to continue as if he is entertaining it,” Kwetey said.
“The party itself that has promised to ensure that we do what is right for the country has to ensure that, in this spirit of reset, even though we have such a huge majority in Parliament, we use it only to do what is good for the country and not try to change the Constitution because we are trying to make maybe one person happy,” he explained.
Also, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman, NDC, has issued a statement boldly declaring that the party will not sponsor, support or entertain any move to amend the presidential term limits for any individual, including President John Dramani Mahama.
The NDC statement comes on the heels of Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, sharing his opinion on the not ending talks surrounding the possibility of President John Dramani Mahama serving a third term in office.
In the statement signed by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC unequivocally, categorically, and without ambiguity stated the NDC has no intention of using its Parliamentary Majority to pursue any amendment to the 1992 Constitution that seeks to extend or alter the two-term presidential limit.
