Government pays GH¢10 billion DDEP interest – Finance Ministry announces

The Ministry of Finance has announced that the John Mahama government has settled GH¢10 billion in interest obligations under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

According to the Ministry of Finance, the payment marks the sixth coupon settlement under the programme and represents the second full cash payment without any Payment-In-Kind component.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, the Ministry of Finance detailed that the settlement covers cedi-denominated DDEP coupon obligations in line with the restructuring memorandum and the government’s broader debt management.

The statement stressed that the payment reflects the strengthened fiscal capacity and solvency.

The Ministry of Finance statement shared by the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, read, “GOVERNMENT PAYS GH¢10 BILLION DDEP INTEREST

The Government of Ghana has paid GH¢10 billion in interest obligations under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

This payment marks the sixth coupon settlement under the programme and represents the second full cash payment without any Payment-In-Kind component, reflecting strengthened fiscal capacity and solvency.

The settlement covers cedi-denominated DDEP coupon obligations in line with the restructuring memorandum and Government’s broader debt management and fiscal consolidation strategy”.

The statement further added, “The timely payment sends a strong positive signal to domestic and international investors, reinforces market confidence, and is expected to support Ghana’s credit outlook while enhancing stability within the financial sector, including banks and pension funds.

Government remains fully committed to meeting future DDEP obligations, supported by strong buffers, improving macroeconomic fundamentals, declining inflation, lower interest rates, and a stable Cedi”.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the news stated, “Ghana’s own Lannister. Calmly paying off debts that he knows nothing about”.

Another X user added, “Every government pays debts accrued by its predecessors. When we say this is noise, den dem bore”.

One more netizen added, “Imagine if NPP were in power.  They know nothing about fiscal discipline, and they would have mismanaged this economy and led us into more debt. But here we are, NDC led by Ato is calmly paying off the debt, and I know it will be paid in time for everyone to enjoy..!!”

May blessings be showered upon you, Sir, as you work to address the debts incurred by the previous fake and corrupted NPP”, a Ghanaian added.

“Infact NDC government is suffering paaa trying to settle the mess created by NPP hmmmm okitiwo kode moko firfir fii adwir”, one more X user added.

Another Ghanaian added, “This means the government is committed to managing Ghana’s debt and honouring its promises to investors. They now have enough money to make payments on time, which helps build trust. When investors feel confident, it can bring more investment, leading to job creation and better..”

Additionally, a netizen added, “Well done, Hon. @Cassielforson!  GH¢10 billion paid in full cash, no PIK, no excuses. This is what real fiscal discipline and recovery look like. Timely coupon payments are restoring trust for banks, pension funds, and everyday investors. The improving macros, falling inflation, and stable cedi didn’t happen by chance; strong leadership is delivering.
