Manasseh Azure Awuni, an Investigative journalist, has reacted to comments made by Laadi Ayii Ayamba, the Member of Parliament for Pusiga, who has claimed the El-Wak tragedy during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise was beyond human control.
According to the Pusiga MP, yesterday was the day the Almighty Allah had ordained for them to die.
Speaking on the Floor of Parliament, Laadi Ayii Ayamba said, “There is nothing that happens that doesn’t happen at the right time. This is what the Almighty Allah has ordained for them. Today is their day. No matter how, no matter what, no matter who was there, as what.”
She added, “Even if we brought all the presidents of the world to sit there as ministers or whatsoever, once today is ordained for them to die, they will. And this is what has happened. Unless you don’t believe in the oneness of God, unless you don’t believe in the oneness of the Almighty Allah, it is not anybody. It is not anybody.”
Ayamba further clarified, “Who wanted them to die? There is no single officer there who wanted even one single soul to pass.”
Reacting to the MP’s remarks, Manasseh Azure revealed he cringed throughout her submission.
In a post on X, he wrote, “This MP just said in parliament that it was the will of God that the young people die at the recruitment exercise and that nothing could have been done to save them”.
“I cringed throughout her submission; some of her words were cruder than I’ve reported”, he added.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed six people have died in the ongoing military recruitment at the El-Wak Stadium.
Reports suggest the chaos occurred around 6:20 a.m. when applicants breached security protocols.
According to GAF, 28 people were taken to the 37 Military Hospital.
They further revealed that six people have died, with five in the ICU and another 12 in critical condition.
The information gathered suggests the six died as a result of a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra.
According to reports, thousands of young Ghanaians thronged the El-Wak stadium in a desperate bid to secure enlistment into the Ghana military.
The chaos occurred following the large crowd jostling at the entry points, resulting in a stampede that led to multiple injuries and fatalities.
The information gathered suggests the bodies of the six deceased have been deposited at the 37 Military Hospital morgue.
Several other potential military recruits are receiving emergency treatment at the facility’s casualty ward.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed the passing of six young women during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise at El-Wak.
Mahama described the incident as a heartbreaking loss for the entire nation.
Speaking to the gathering at the launch of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Initiative in Kumasi on Wednesday, November 12, Mahama stated, “a heartbreaking loss for the entire nation. The tragic news is that I have been informed by the military that six young women, who simply sought an opportunity to serve their nation, lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident. We are praying for the 12 others who remain in critical condition”.
