Eric Opoku, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, has said he does not understand why former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta does not want to account for his stewardship.

The Agric Minister recounted that when the NDC lost power, he was called to account for his stewardship.

According to Eric Opoku, Ofori-Atta’s failure to return to the country to be investigated by authorities is a disgrace to himself as a person and a disgrace to his party.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV, Eric Opoku stated, “I have been a minister before. When we lost office, the NPP had assumed the office. They wrote to me to come and meet the transition team. I went and met with them. They asked me the questions, I responded, and that ended it,” he recounted on GH One TV on January 22, 2026.

“I think that every public officeholder must understand that once you are entrusted with a responsibility, you will one day account for your stewardship, and so when the day comes, you don’t run.

“It is absolutely wrong for you to presume that you will not account for your stewardship as a public servant. No, that shouldn’t be. So, some of us are worried about why a public officer should attempt to run away from accountability. Come listen and answer to the questions. If you did your best with the best of intentions and your conscience judges you right, why do you fear?” he said.

Eric Opoku added, “What has happened is a disgrace to himself as a person and a disgrace to his party, so it is an unfortunate incident. It shouldn’t have happened at all. Some of the ministers of the previous regime are around. Whenever you invite them, they will come. You ask them the questions. If you find them culpable, expose them to the full rigours of the law. If they are not culpable, they will go back to their homes,” he indicated.

“It has been so since time immemorial, so I don’t understand why a whole finance minister, the handler of the purse of our nation, you don’t want to account for your stewardship,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Gabby Otchere-Darko, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, has said his cousin, former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, wants to come to Ghana.

According to Gabby Otchere-Darko, speaking for the first time publicly regarding Ken Ofori-Atta’s ICE detention, he revealed his cousin is doing well.

Gabby Otchere-Darko stressed that he believes Ken would come to Ghana, and know he wants to come to Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV hosted by Serwaa Amihere, Gabby was asked what Ken Ofori-Atta thought of claims that he was responsible for the “unpopular decisions” on Ghana’s economy during the administration of former President Akufo-Addo.

Gabby stated, “I haven’t seen him for a while, so I don’t know.”

When questioned how he felt about the unpopular decision, he added, “I will keep my feelings to myself, I don’t have an opinion I want to share”.

Speaking about Ofori-Atta’s detention, Gabby said that his cousin is a strong man.

He added that his faith would see him through the challenges he is going through

Serwaa Amihere then questioned Gabby on pictures of Ofori-Atta’s virtual appearance before a US immigration court from his detention centre. While spotting a black jumpsuit, he stated, “He is a very strong man mentally, so I’m sure he is doing well”.

Serwaa Amihere then asked Gabby about the conversation he had with Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, where Gabby is reported to have said that Ken is afraid of returning to Ghana because of how he would be treated.

Gabby responded, saying, “I don’t discuss private conversations publicly, so I don’t wish to discuss it”.

Gabby went on to give the assurance that Ken Ofori-Atta would return to Ghana.

“Why will he not return to Ghana? I believe Ken would come to Ghana, and I know he wants to come to Ghana,” he said.
