Dr Bryan Acheampong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, has revealed he funded the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, more than the former president Akufo-Addo.
According to Bryan Acheampong, Dr Bawumia did not contribute a penny during the 2023 presidential primaries in the Eastern Region.
He revealed that he paid every penny for Bawumia to become the NPP’s flagbearer.
Speaking to some members of the NPP, Dr Bryan Acheampong stated, “Dr Bawumia’s primaries in 2023, he did not contribute a penny to the Eastern Region. I paid every single penny for him to become the flagbearer of this party. He didn’t pay a penny, and it is a fact.
In the 2024 elections, I funded Dr. Bawumia more than I even funded Akufo-Addo. I am happy that two-thirds of the people here are from the Eastern Region”, he boldly added.
Dr Bryan Acheampong, in a separate video, revealed he personally financed the NPP’s campaign in the Eastern Region during the 2024 election season.
According to Bryan Acheampong, he funded the party’s campaign activities by giving each NPP polling station executive in November, numbering about 26,000, GHS 2 million each.
Dr Bryan Acheampong further revealed that he also financed 33 parliamentary candidates in the Eastern region with GH¢100,000 every month from May to October.
In a viral video sighted Dr Bryan Acheampong stated, “In 2020, we were in government, so nobody needed my money. But in 2024, the regional chairman and the regional secretary are here, in the Eastern Region, except for about six MPs who were financially independent. I gave each of the remaining parliamentary candidates GH¢100,000”.
“It was from May to October — May, June, July, August, September, October. In November, my regional chairman and regional secretary can bear witness, we have 26,000 polling station executives in the Eastern Region, and I gave each of them GH¢2,000,000 in November to work with at their polling stations,” he added.
Dr Bryan Acheampong has already officially announced his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position.
According to Bryan Acheampong, he will contest when the NPP officially opens nominations.
Bryan Acheampong made the announcement after the leadership of the Presbyterian Church offered prayers for him.
Meanwhile, Dr Bryan Acheampong, in recent times, has said Dr Mahamudu Bawumia tribe was to blame for the NPP’s 2024 election defeat.
The lawmaker in his statement cited former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Akufo-Addo’s getting votes from the Kusasi, but Bawumia’s belonging to one side of the divide led to the NPP losing votes with the Kusasi.
According to Dr Bryan Acheampong, the NPP chose Dr Bawumia, who is a Mamprusi, one of the tribes in the Bawku Conflict caused the NPP to lose its seat in the Oti Region, Upper East, Upper West, and the Northern Region.
Speaking to a gathering, Dr Bryan Acheampong stated, “President Kufuor won all NPP votes in Kusasi, and President Akufo-Addo also did the same thing, but because the fight is between two tribes (Mamprusis and Kusasis) and we elected a flagbearer from one of them, we lost in the Oti Region, Upper East, Upper West, and the Northern Region.
“We lost all our seats because of the candidate we presented (Dr Mahamudu Bawumia), and he could be a victim of circumstance and not his fault, but the timing didn’t favour him”, he added.
In addition, Dr Bryan Acheampong has insisted that his statement, widely regarded as a tribal statement against Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, was factual.
According to Dr Bryan Acheampong, the statements were facts he was sharing with some NPP party members.
Dr Bryan Acheampng is quoted by GHONE TV to have said, “The so-called tribal statements I made were facts I was sharing with party people”.
