“I joined Freemasons in 1967 as a young lawyer” – Kufuor

News“I joined Freemasons in 1967 as a young lawyer” - Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has opened up about his Freemasonry fraternity.

According to John Agyekum Kufuor, he joined the Freemasons in 1967 as a young lawyer.

He highlighted that he joined the Freemasons fraternity because a number of his close family and friends were part of the fraternity.

The former president debunked assertions that the Freemasonry fraternity was an occult organisation and engaged in rituals.

Speaking in an interview on the Dalay Show on December 6, 2025, John Agyekum Kufuor stated, “I joined the Freemasons in 1967 as a young lawyer. I joined them because members of my family — my uncle and my senior brother — as well as our friends, were all masons”.

He noted that Freemasonry activities may be mysterious, but they are not engaged in anything evil.

“People are likely to be afraid of what they do not know. You see us wearing black ties, bowing with some of us holding [sic], singing when we are going to bury someone… people say we are going to resurrect the person, but it is not the truth”, he added.

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor furher opened up on his Catholic faith.

According to him, he was originally not a Catholic but started practising the Catholic faith due to the influence of his wife and children.

Kufuor stated, “My wife was a chorister. She was a Catholic and took my household to church, Christ the King. I was not a Catholic, but from the way things were going, I converted to join them.

“My children told me that all the parents and their classmates attend the church, but I always drop them off and leave. So, I thought of this and said that we serve the same God whether we attend the Anglican, the Methodist, or the Catholic church, so I joined them. I became a practising Catholic after this,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra has reiterated the Church’s position on Freemasonry.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra firmly states that Catholics cannot be Freemasons and remain true to the Catholic faith.

In a statement issued by Most Rev. John Bonaventure Kwofie, Metropolitan Archbishop of Accra, he stated, “You can’t be a true Catholic and a Freemason at the same time.”

Quoting from the document, he said: “The Church’s negative judgment in regard to Masonic association remains unchanged since their principles have always been considered irreconcilable with the doctrine of the Church, and therefore membership in them remains forbidden. The faithful who enrol in Masonic associations are in a state of grave sin and may not receive Holy Communion.”

“Masonic principles denigrate Jesus Christ, our Lord and God, placing Him on the same level as Buddha, Krishna, Confucius, and others. Prayers through Christ are omitted and instead addressed to the ‘Great Architect of the Universe,’” he explained.

He added: “Freemasonry wants the destruction of Christianity, and no one can claim to be a proud Catholic and a Freemason.”
