Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said he will never contest for the NPP flagbearer position as long as Dr Mahamudu Bawumia contests.

Napo, as he is commonly referred to, highlighted that no one matches Dr Mahamudu’s wisdom, experience, and ideas to lead Ghana within the NPP.

Speaking on Oyerpa FM, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh explained, “His (Dr Bryan Acheampong) first time of being a Cabinet minister was four years ago, he came to meet us. Also, Dr Adutwum’s first time as a Cabinet minister was four years ago. I, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, have served Cabinent for seven years.

I have worked with all of them at Cabinet, and nobody comes anywhere near Dr Bawumia. To the extent that I decided not to contest for the presidency if Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is contesting”.

According to Napo, some person contesting for the NPP flagnearership during their time in Cabinet did not produce a single memo for Cabinet to consider.

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh added, “Because we are looking for somebody with wisdom among us to lead, as this is governance, nobody comes near. Some of them sat at the Cabinet and never brought a single memo”.

He further stressed that those blaming Dr Bawumia for the collapse of Ghana’s economy under the Akufo-Addo government are not being truthful.

Napo detailed, “If you look at the relevance to the government, all those contesting who brought policies that have not been done before, today, if the NDC is talking about the one that has fixed Ghana’s economy  they don’t mention any vice president. When 88 NPP MPs called for Ken’s removal, we did not say the vice president must go. So today, if somebody says the vice president collapses the economy, then that person is not being truthful”.

In related news, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh gave a cryptic reply to GHOne TV’s Serwaa Amihere on whether he wants to be president or not.

Napo, speaking on the GHOne Morning Show with Serwaa Amihere, when asked if he wants to be president, disclosed that one must learn how to serve before leading.

He, however, highlighted that those seeking to become President on the ticket of the NPP are already going through the process.

Read the dialogue between the two below:

Serwaa Amihere: Do you want to be President?

Napo: No, those who want to be president are going through the process.

Serwaa Amihere: Not now, maybe in the near future

Napo: What is the future here?

Serwaa Amihere: Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, do you ever want to be president?

Napo: That is not why I am working for Dr Bawumia. I don’t know even the word ever; I don’t understand when there is a contest ongoing.

Serwaa Amihere: it a yes or no question

Napo: it not a yes or no question, when there is a live contest

Serwaa Amihere: It certainly cannot be now, maybe in the next 12 years?

Napo: Have you seen my adopted logo?

Serwaa Amihere: No, I have not.

Napo: You have to learn to serve

Serwaa Amihere: I think you have answered my question. Meaning you want to lead, but you are learning to serve

Napo: If you don’t learn to serve, you can never be a chief

Serwaa Amihere: So you will become president, but you want to learn how to serve

Napo: If that is your wish, thank God.
