“If I were a presidential candidate, I would never have conceded defeat” – Ken Agyapong

News“If I were a presidential candidate, I would never have conceded defeat” – Ken Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong, the former Assin Central Member of Parliament and presidential candidate hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has said that if he were a presidential candidate, he would never concede defeat until the Electoral Commission (EC) officially announces the results.

According to Kennedy Agyapong, until the last constituency is counted, he will never accept defeat.

Mr Agyapong highlighted that the NPP needs bold and courageous leaders ahead of the 2028 elections to match the NDC.

Speaking to party faithfuls as part of his regional tour in the Savannah Region on Wednesday, October 15, Kennedy Agyapong stated, “Until the last constituency is counted, if I am a presidential candidate, I will never accept defeat. I will never accept defeat until the Electoral Commission comes out to declare. I will never accept defeat,” he stated firmly, drawing cheers from his supporters.

He added that, “We need bold men… the party needs people who can match the NDC in every respect and defend the interests of our supporters.”

He further urged delegates to reject any candidate who focuses on personal attacks instead of addressing key issues such as job creation.

“The delegates must reject any candidate who does not talk about jobs but spends time attacking my personality and saying I am not presidential,” he said.

His comments come on the back of the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession speech, less than 12 hours after the 2024 election.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia had already given details of some of the events that led to his concession speech.

Speaking to a gathering, Dr Bawumia stated, “Even though the Electoral Commission had not yet pronounced, in fact, some of my people in my team were saying you can’t go out to concede, we don’t know if all this data is right, let’s wait. And all of that. I said, Look, we know this data is right from our own system, you know, so if you wait, you build up more tension, and violence could come because people would think we are trying to rig the election.

“Because that is the message that is coming, that we are trying to rig the election. But nobody has ever conceded an election without the EC coming out to pronounce. And I said there’s a first time for everything. For the interest of the peace and stability of our country, I will come out, I’ll be the first person to concede even before the EC comes out”, he said.

He added, “And so at 9 am I came out and I conceded right here where we are standing. I spoke to the country, I said that I believe that in the interest of peace and security, our democracy and also our economic environment, any violence discourages investors from coming to this country, and it only encourages the terrorists around our sub-region to come here because there is instability, and this is not what God has for Ghana. God wants a peaceful Ghana.”
