Yang Weiqiang, Ghana’s First Chinese Lawyer, has said he is mentoring more Chinese to study law in Ghana.
According to Yang Weiqiang, he has been practising law in the country for the past eight years.
Speaking to the media in a video shared on X, Yang Weiqiang stated, “It means the Chinese community is legally represented in Ghana. I have been practising for 8 years now, since 2017.
I am bringing more Chinese and also educating people on how to go to law school, pass the entrance exams, and also go to law school for professional training. You will see more Chinese in Ghana”, he said.
When asked about whether he has taken any cases on illegal mining since he was called to the Bar.
Yang Weiqiang claimed that he has not represented anyone or a Chinese national in court regarding illegal mining so far, adding that he would not take up a case related to galasmey.
“No, I have never represented any person involved in illegal mining before. This topic is too sensitive, and I cannot talk about it. I don’t think so because the law is tight now. But I have been educating them on social media and also reaching out to the Chinese Embassy”, he added.
His remarks came barely a week ago, after Paul Chen, a Chinese national, became the topic of discussions on social media after he was called to the Bar.
Also, Paul Chen, a Ghana-based Chinese called to the Bar, has shared his aspiration after being called to the Bar.
According to Paul Chen, he hopes to educate all Chinese nationals involved in galamsey about Ghana’s legal system.
The Ghana-based Chinese is quoted by GHOne to have said, “ hope to educate all Chinese nationals involved in galamsey about Ghana’s legal system and laws”.
Meanwhile, Paul Chen, a Chinese businessman based in Kumasi, has been called to the Ghana Bar along with some 824 Lawyers.
He revealed his decision to pursue legal education as an advantage in his business.
According to him, the legal education was very challenging, but he thanked his lecturers and judges for helping him through it.
Speaking to the media in an interview, Paul Chen stated, “I was born in Taiwan, I came to Ghana when I was young, and I am currently doing business in Kumasi, and I thought being a lawyer is a very useful thing to do. Legal knowledge is a powerful tool, so it will help me with the business in Ghana.
When asked about his experience at the Ghana School of Law, he added, “It is very challenging, and I got a lot of help from the lecturers and the judges with whom I interned.
Without their help, it would have been a lot harder. I am very grateful that it has been a long journey”.
