“It’s heartbreaking” – Dr Zaato slams Pusiga MP over El-Wak tragedy remarks

News“It’s heartbreaking” - Dr Zaato slams Pusiga MP over El-Wak tragedy remarks

Dr Joshua Zaato, a political scientist and senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, has slammed the Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba.

According to Dr Zaato, Laadi Ayii Ayamba’s comments on the floor of parliament following the El-Wak tragedy are heartbreaking.

He revealed the MPs’ comments were deeply disappointing and out of touch with the grief families of the victims were enduring.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on November 13, 2025, Dr Zaato stated, “If you had nothing to say, young girls died, mothers were mourning, mothers were crying. When you have such people making policies for us, you wonder where we are as a country. When you have such mediocrity, it’s heartbreaking”.

“Everybody in the chamber was cringing. You could feel it. People were like, ‘no, no, no this woman is not ready to be called honourable”,  he stated.

Their remarks follow the MP for Pusiga, who claimed the El-Wak tragedy during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise was beyond human control.

According to the Pusiga MP, yesterday was the day the Almighty Allah had ordained for them to die.

Speaking on the Floor of Parliament, Laadi Ayii Ayamba said, “There is nothing that happens that doesn’t happen at the right time. This is what the Almighty Allah has ordained for them. Today is their day. No matter how, no matter what, no matter who was there, as what.”

She added, “Even if we brought all the presidents of the world to sit there as ministers or whatsoever, once today is ordained for them to die, they will. And this is what has happened. Unless you don’t believe in the oneness of God, unless you don’t believe in the oneness of the Almighty Allah, it is not anybody. It is not anybody.”

Ayamba further clarified, “Who wanted them to die? There is no single officer there who wanted even one single soul to pass.”

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed six people have died in the ongoing military recruitment at the El-Wak Stadium.

Reports suggest the chaos occurred around 6:20 a.m. when applicants breached security protocols.

According to GAF, 28 people were taken to the 37 Military Hospital.

They further revealed that six people have died, with five in the ICU and another 12 in critical condition.

Also, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has donated GH¢100,000 to support the medical treatment of victims injured in the El-Wak Sports Stadium stampede.

Speaker Bagbin, accompanied by the leadership of Parliament, visited the victims at the 37 Military Hospital on Thursday.

He commiserates with the injured and their families.
