The spokesperson for New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential hopeful Ken Agyapong, Kwasi Kwarteng, has explained why his candidate protested at the party’s peace pact signing.
During the signing ceremony, Ken Agyapong was captured in a viral video raising issues with party officials, prompting questions about his objections.
According to Kwasi Kwarteng, Ken Agyapong’s protest at the NPP peace pact signing was due to a missing clause that had earlier been agreed upon by all aspirants
Speaking on Channel One TV, Kwasi Kwarteng explained, “Initially, the expectation was that the organisers would have served the parties with the documents of the peace pact so that they would have read earlier and know the details and content of it before they came for the event and undertake the ceremony. Unfortunately, we did not get the documents as earlier agreed amongst the parties. So Ken had the first-hand opportunity to go through the document at the venue,” he said.
“Before that, the parties had earlier agreed with the Presidential Election Committee and the Electoral Commission that where the voting centres would also be used as the collation centres, and the declarations would also be made there. And so, in the event that there is any mishap or security is compromised, those centres may not be counted. That was what was agreed at the aspirant level, together with the Electoral Commission and the Presidential Election Committee,” he added.
“Lo and behold, when he led that charge, the chairman of the Presidential Election Committee admitted that it was an omission and, of course, made a verbal assurance that subsequently they would insert it,” he stated.
Meanwhile, All five New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants have today, January 22, 2026, signed a peace pact ahead of the party’s primaries on January 31, 2026.
Kennedy Agyapong – Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Dr Bryan Acheampong – MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Agriculture, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia – Former Vice President, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum – Former Minister of Education, Mr Kwabena Agyepong – Former Presidential Press Secretary and NPP General Secretary, all signed the peace pact.
The five aspirants committed to unity, respect for the electoral process, and support for the eventual winner ahead.
NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, speaking during the signing ceremony, asserted that the peace pact underscores the party’s commitment to a transparent, fair, and peaceful primary process.
Justin Kodua stated, “The peace pact ensures that all candidates actively participate at every stage and accept the results of the January 31 primaries. It also commits all aspirants to maintain party cohesion and support the winner in the 2028 general elections”.
Justin Kodua Frimpong further issued a stern warning ahead of the party’s internal elections scheduled for January 31.
The NPP General Secretary warned that anyone trying to cause chaos will be arrested by the IGP and his men.
According to the NPP General Secretary, the party is committed to ensuring that the internal elections are conducted in a free, fair and secure environment nationwide.
He further appealed to the presidential aspirants to conduct themselves with restraint and uphold party unity before, during and after the contest.
Speaking at the signing of a peace pact by NPP presidential aspirants, Justin Kodua stated, “I want to use this medium to send a strong caution to any person in our party or outside our party who has any intention of discrediting or trying to mar the beauty of our democracy come January 31.
Be careful, because on that day the IGP and his men will apprehend anybody who tries to cause chaos,” Mr Kodua warned on Thursday, January 22.
“This contest is not a war. It is only to show whether you have the support of the party or not. When you win, you still need the support of your brothers to carry on and win the election in 2028,” he said.
