Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has officially begun enforcing a strict dress code policy to promote a decent and conducive academic environment.
According to a notice shared on X, KNUST Libraries showed pictures of what the university considers inappropriate attire for both male and female students.
The notice highlighted for males, shirts with deep necklines, sleeveless tops or vests, sagging trousers worn below the waist, boxer shorts, shorts above knee length, and caps, as inappropriate.
For the females, crop tops, biker pants, deep-cut cleavage outfits, midriff-baring tops, short shorts or hot pants, short revealing skirts, and caps are considered inappropriate by the KNUST.
KNUST libraries notice further stated, “Anyone found indecently dressed will not be allowed entry or will be asked to leave the library. Any dress that can not be taken to lectures cannot be brought to the library”.
Some Ghanaians reacting to the news wrote, “Boys dey walk with boxer shorts”
“How the fuck do dresses even affect studies? What the fuck is this r*tarded mentality bro?”, a netizen added.
“Who are those misogynistic people who think they can police what women wear in this age? A school isn’t a prison. Allow women to express themselves through what they wear. Hands off women’s bodies and clothing!”, a netizen added.
An X user added, “Black man and gyimii . What is wrong with a cap?? You can let a student identify themselves and put their cap back on”.
“How does this help you go to space?
Your peers who attended Legon are going to space, and you are here enforcing the dress code. Are you a church? In this hot weather, if someone chooses to wear decent pants/shorts or sleeveless, what’s wrong”, one more netizen added.
A netizen added, “Hope the laws will be the same for the foreign students who mostly come in sleeveless and shorts/pants as well. The weather is hot, and we must wake up to reality. I don’t see the bearing of these directives on academic work. Of course, indecent dressing is a big no no”.
One X user added, “When they talk about dress code, people think they’re enslaving the students. Do we know the consequences of dressing inappropriately on campus? God bless UPSA officials for their bold stand !”
“In this hot weather? Naa, these are doing too much. I’m in the US, and this isn’t a problem. Are they going to seduce the security guards or the librarians?”, a netizen added.
