An irate Ghanaian woman has called out the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over how quickly prepaid electricity credits are running.
According to the Irate woman, a proper investigation needs to be conducted into the ECG system.
She is alleging possible foul play after several complaints about prepaid electricity credits running out too quickly.
The irate woman stressed that she purchased GH¢60 worth of credit at around 5:00 am, but by 7:00 pm the entire amount had been exhausted.
She further asserted that her concern about the prepaid electricity credits is not baseless as it has happened mutiply time.
Speaking in a viral video shared on X, “This thing is becoming too much. Let’s put politics aside, let’s put NPP and NDC aside. I don’t know who is controlling the ECG. The light issues are becoming too much in Ghana; even if I place a horse in the fridge, it will not read this way.
Now, when you buy 100 cedis, it is 24 hours, then it will be exhausted. Just this dawn, my prepaid got exhausted, and around 5: 00 am I bought 60 cedis, but by 7:00 pm the entire amount had been exhausted”.
She added, “The AC here, I don’t even turn it on. I have two fridge but I use only one of them even that I don’t turn it on.
What is happening, what about us, those who don’t have work, I buy prepaid credit 100 cedis 24/7. If I should print the amount I spend on electricty you will open your mouth wide. Those who are not complaining, I am sure most of them are doing illegal”.
Some Ghanaians reacting to the news stated, “This ECG trend I’m seeing is it politically motivated or what? Lights have been expensive since those new meters were installed in late 2024 tho. There’s been a slight increase in 2025. I don’t see any significant difference like people are saying!”.
A netizen stated, “The question is, how is her consumption? What appliances is she using? Because some ppl buy Ghc 100 for a month. If you buy Ghc 60 and on your AC, fridge, using microwave, air fryer, washing machine, and other appliances, it won’t last. Also, she should check her earthen system”.
“And on top of that they’ll not allow the light to stay on, I’m at Achimota kingsby and it’s been hell for the past weeks. They’ll off the light and turn in back on within 30-45 and the least that happened in a day is 5 times. Today, Monday, it hasn’t been off yet, but I’m sure”, one more X user added.
An X user added, “Most often, we put the blame on the service providers. How often do we call certified electrical professionals to also check leakage in our electrical wiring?
ECG is too quiet. They should also educate consumers on what to do right”.
“Illegal connection is looking more and more reasonable when you sit down and think about it cause prepaid will finish you. Imagine the whole area having light around 3 am and your prepaid has finish including the extra & it’s not those momo prepaid”, a netizen added.
One more Ghanaian wrote, “Telcos boost internet speed (4G), but then data finishes twice as fast. ECG “upgrades” meters, but then the cost of electricity nearly doubles. GWCL “rations” the water supply every week, but then the cost of water becomes almost 2x more expensive. God bless our homeland Ghana”.
