Appiah Stadium, a popular political activist and staunch supporter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has apologised to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over insulting remarks he made during a tirade against the Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye.

According to Appiah Stadium, President Mahama called him and scolded him; he wasn’t happy with what I said against Akufo-Addo.

Appiah Stadium added that his decision to apologise follows a period of reflection and remorse over the comments, and he realised that what he said was wrong.

Speaking in another self-recorded video, Appiah Stadium stated, “Mahama called and scolded me. He said that he watched my video yesterday and that he wasn’t happy with what I said against Akufo-Addo because no follower of his should utter the words I did.

“Daddy, I myself know and have realised that the things I said because of Asenso-Boakye were not proper. Because you are a father for all, and I have also realised that the words I used were wrong, I have to retract what I said and record this video for people to see that your (Mahama’s) followers have good training,” he said.

“JM, I don’t want anything to taint your good works, and so I want to apologise to every Ghanaian that what Asenso-Boakye said, which created the impression that President Mahama does not want the progress of Asanteman, is what angered me to speak against the former head of state. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo supporters and all Ghanaians, forgive me for what I have said,” he added.

Appiah Stadium’s apology stems from a self-Recorded audio, which captured him using unprintable words against Bantama MP Asenso Boakye and former President Nana Akufo-Addo. After Asenso Boakye stated that Akufo-Addo performed better in governance than President Mahama, prompting an angry phone call.

In the viral video, Appiah Stadium is seen holding a phone and ranting at Asenso-Boakye and also firing some stray bullets at Akufo-Addo.

“I will fire you and tell you my mind because you are going wayward. And I am telling you that I am coming to insult you. You are not the right person to criticise President Mahama.

“What did you achieve as minister for you to pick a camera and insult John Mahama? What Mahama has done is far better than your president, Akufo-Addo. You want to disgrace John Mahama.”

The brouhaha follows criticisms from Mr Asenso-Boakye regarding the redesign of the Suame interchange.

Speaking on behalf of the Ashanti caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament, Asenso-Boakye questioned the government’s funding priorities following the decision to downgrade the Suame Interchange Project.

The former Roads Minister quizzed why the government could mobilise funds for other major road projects while the Suame Interchange is being scaled back.

He further cited the public statements by the Finance Minister Ato Forson, who announced that GHS 43 billion has been allocated to road infrastructure this year.

Asenso-Boakye questioned why a fraction of that funding could not be used to complete the Suame Interchange as it was originally designed.

“If government could mobilise funds for the Ofankor–Nsawam road and other major projects, why is the Suame Interchange being short-changed?” he queried.

“Kumasi deserves infrastructure that meets its scale and significance,” Mr Asenso-Boakye said. “Short-changing major projects now will cost the city and the nation—far more in the long term.”

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Asenso-Boakye stated,  “The two-tier plan proposed by the government will not resolve the ongoing traffic problems. Kumasi continues to grow, and effective traffic solutions are essential.

The financing for this project was secured through a loan agreement with a bank in Spain, which was approved by Parliament. Everything was set for the project when the debt restructuring occurred, leading to a withdrawal of resources. The previous government then obtained funding from Afreximbank for the Suame Interchange,” he said.
