The Good Governance Advocacy Group Ghana (GGAGG) has officially petitioned President John Mahama to immediately remove Dr Randy Abbey from his position as CEO of the Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

The group cites alleged mismanagement, poor leadership, financial irregularities, and actions that undermine the interests of cocoa farmers and threaten the stability of Ghana’s cocoa sector.

The petition filed by the Good Governance Advocacy Group dated February 9, 2026, reads, “Mr President, before touching on the grounds for this nation-saving petition, I wish to warmly commend you on your hard work, servant leadership, and focus on solutions, even though you met a worse economy bequeathed to you by your highly ineffectual predecessors.

I must also be quick to add that the results of the best economic indicators so far and the low cost of living for both Ghanaians and foreign residents in Ghana are a testament to your quality of service to Ghana, our motherland”.

“However, Your Excellency, very unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the work of your appointee at the Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Dr Randy Abbey. Mr President, it is sad to officially report to you that, unlike you, Dr Randy Abbey does not have good intentions for the onerous role you kindly bestowed on him,” part of the petition stated.

“Your Excellency, unfortunately, Dr Randy Abbey’s COCOBOD management has been characterised by poor leadership choices, incompetence, arrogance, intimidation tactics, misaligned or misplaced priorities, financial mismanagement, questionable renovations, resistance to change, undermining initiatives, and blocking operational improvements, to say the least,” it added.

The petition comes at a time when cocoa farmers across the country have threatened to demonstrate over unpaid monies owed by COCOBOD for cocoa beans supplied since November 2025.

Some Ghanaians reacting to the news stated, “This is a step in the right direction from Good Governance Advocacy Group Ghana”.

Another netizen added, “So, where was this useless organisation during the last regime? This country Nkasa the joke is too much. Every kwasia wakes up and petitions the office of the President”,

One more X user added, “Mahama would sack him. It’s not even about NPP or NDC politics. He knows nothing about cocoa and is too arrogant to learn. He should be reassigned to somewhere his natural talents and skills would shine. I suggest an ambassadorial/diplomatic role since he’s an excellent communicator”.

However, President John Dramani Mahama has broken his silence concerning Ghana’s failure to secure sustainable funding for the cocoa sector.

Speaking on the matter on Wednesday, February 11, the President stated, “Our handling of state-owned enterprises has at times been uneven. Weak governance frameworks, political interference, and inadequate financial discipline have undermined institutions that were once engines of stability and credibility.

“We failed to raise sustainable funding for cocoa and COCOBOD’s capacity to syndicate effectively. These are not points of blame, but lessons in responsibility,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, has announced that President John Dramani Mahama has called for an emergency cabinet meeting.

According to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the emergency cabinet meeting is to address the crisis in Ghana’s cocoa sector.

He announced that the emergency cabinet meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, 2026.

In a social media post on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, on X, Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated, “President Mahama has called an EMERGENCY CABINET SESSION for tomorrow, Wednesday, 11th February, 2026, to address all issues affecting the Cocoa sector”.
