Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed, Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Abuakwa South Constituency, has refuted claims linking his son to illegal mining (galamsey).
According to Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed, his son is a gold merchant and his dealings are legal.
The NDC Chairman clarified that, contrary to public speculation, the MCE made no such allegation against his son during his appearance before the Local Government and Rural Development Committee.
He boldly stated that accusations levelled by some individuals against his son’s mining business are false.
Speaking in an interview shared on X, Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed stated, “The MCE’s task force visited my son’s mining site during their operation, and while there, they pointed out something they were not doing right.
Two days later, he appeared before parliament, where he was questioned about his relationship with me and his friendly demeanour while inspecting my son’s mining site”
He added, “He responded that if he was at the mining site of his constituency chairman to inspect his son’s work, then that should inform the committee how serious he is about the work. So I don’t know why people are twisting the whole thing up,” he said.
Whatever he is doing his legal. He is even a gold merchant, and as a father, I am a politically exposed person. So if he does anything bad, I will equally be affected, so there is no way I would watch him do something bad.
Let me tell you that he didn’t start this business today. He has been doing it under various political regimes… They should thoroughly check and ensure that he has all the documents. But you don’t go about speculating rumours without evidence”, Alhaji Sanusi Mohammed stated.
In related news, Professor Kwesi Aning, a Security consultant, has claimed Italian mafia network is using Ghana’s illegal mining (galamsey) to clean their dirty money.
According to Professor Kwesi Aning, his research findings cite that the Italian mafia network is ceasing advantage of galamsey to launder money.
Speaking on JoyNewsFile on Saturday, October 11, 2025, Professor Kwesi Aning stated, “There are two studies, several studies, in fact. One shows that a group from Italy, the Italian mafia, brings in enough dirty money to buy gold. This is free consultancy for the national security and the financial intelligence agency; one Italian mafia group brings in dirty money to buy gold, takes it, sells it elsewhere, cleans the money, and takes it back to Europe.
That is number one,” he stated while answering a question on whether the security issues arising from illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, could lead to the terrorisation of Ghanaians or militia activities in the country”.
He added, “Number two, we know, and it is proven beyond doubt, that with the exception of Mali, Ghana is the second-largest gold-producing country, where the leakages are massive.
Now, I think Elikem might be able to tell us, but initial calculations show that about 2 to 2.5 billion dollars worth of illicit small-scale gold oozes out of the system every year.
This leads to organised criminal groups having an interest in ensuring that whatever NIAMOS is achieving right now will be resisted, and I can tell you that there is going to be resistance,” he added.
