On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, members of the pressure group Arise Ghana stormed the United States Embassy in Accra, demanding the return of former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.
The Arise Ghana protesters gathered outside the embassy premises, clad in red and black attire, called on U.S. authorities to cooperate with Ghanaian institutions to ensure the return of embattled Ken Ofori-Atta.
The group were with placards bearing inscriptions such as “Let Ofori-Atta Face Justice,” “Ken’s Leadership Killed Ghanaians”, “Ken Is Needed in Ghana, ‘Bring Ken Home”, and “No Hiding Place for Corruption.”
Bernard Monah an PNC member, speaking to the media, stated, “We all know that as of now, Ken Ofori-Atta is no longer sick. He went to the U.S. to seek medical attention, and now he has healed himself and overstayed his visa. When he was flagged to be arrested, he went ahead to apply to be a permanent citizen of America.”
“This means that he has no plan to return to Ghana. He is avoiding coming back to face justice.”
“So today is the beginning. We will stay here from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and we will come back tomorrow as well.
“We agreed with the police to protest for two weeks. After the two weeks, we have decided to do a sleepover here until the U.S. finds the need to bring Ken Ofori-Atta,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ken Ofori-Atta is expected to face a U.S. court on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, over his immigration violations.
According to reports, Ken Ofori-Atta’s hearing will be a virtual one.
Ken Ofori-Atta has been described by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as an illegal alien.
According to an ICE spokesperson, Ken Ofori-Atta is facing corruption and corruption-related charges in his home country.
ICE detailed that Ken Ofori-Atta entered the United States on May 28, 2025, on a visitor’s visa with an expiration date of November 27, 2025.
Also, Frank Davies, a lawyer for Ken Ofori-Atta, has said his client is happy ahead of his immigration hearing on January 20, 2026.
According to Frank Davies, his client is happy, and Ken Ofori-Atta’s lawyers in the US are also happy.
Speaking in an interview on JoyNews Today on Monday, January 19, Frank Davies revealed, “Ken Ofori-Atta is happy. Our counterpart lawyers in America are happy. We are all waiting for the hearing tomorrow, which will be virtual”.
“What is happening tomorrow is a purely immigration matter. It has nothing to do with any extradition process, whether they call it revocation of visa or whatever,” he said.
He added, “Tomorrow is an immigration hearing for an adjustment of his immigration status in America, simply nothing more, nothing less. After tomorrow, we will all know the position.”
