Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart, has said his cousin, former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, is a very strong man mentally.

According to Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, speaking for the first time publicly regarding Ken Ofori-Atta’s ICE detention, he revealed his cousin is doing well.

Speaking in an interview on GHOne TV hosted by Serwaa Amihere, Gabby was asked what Ken Ofori-Atta thought of claims that he was responsible for the “unpopular decisions” on Ghana’s economy during the administration of former President Akufo-Addo.

Gabby stated, “I haven’t seen him for a while, so I don’t know.”

When questioned how he felt about the unpopular decision, he added, “I will keep my feelings to myself, I don’t have an opinion I want to share”.

Speaking about Ofori-Atta’s detention, Gabby said that his cousin is a strong man.

He added that his faith would see him through the challenges he is going through.

Serwaa Amihere then questioned Gabby on pictures of Ofori-Atta’s virtual appearance before a US immigration court from his detention centre. While spotting a black jumpsuit, he stated, “He is a very strong man mentally, so I’m sure he is doing well”.

Serwaa Amihere then asked Gabby about the conversation he had with Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, where Gabby is reported to have said that Ken is afraid of returning to Ghana because of how he would be treated.

Gabby responded, saying, “I don’t discuss private conversations publicly, so I don’t wish to discuss it”.

Gabby went on to give the assurance that Ken Ofori-Atta would return to Ghana.

“Why will he not return to Ghana? I believe Ken would come to Ghana, and I know he wants to come to Ghana,” he said.

Meanwhile, a US Judge, David A Gardey, presiding over the case of Ghana’s Finance Minister, has requested proof of Ken Ofori-Atta’s extradition request from the US federal government following the closed-door immigration hearing on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

The state attorneys opposed a bond application, known as a bail application in Ghana, for Ofori-Atta, arguing that Ghana has submitted an extradition request for him.

The Judge, however, declined to make an immediate determinationadding that no documentary evidence had been presented to support the assertion.

Judge David A Gardey directed the federal government to file any evidence of an extradition request on or before February 19, 2026.

Also, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, has said he is hopeful an extradition process will soon be initiated to return former finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta to Ghana.

According to the AG, the American authorities are handling the process, and he does not have control over what happens with the Justice Department in the US, but he is hopeful.

The Attorney General further disclosed that he received briefings from US officials after Ken Ofori-Atta’s immigration status hearing.
