A public petition launched by Professor Stephen Kweku Asare, addressed to the US Embassy in Accra, calling for the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has surpassed 3,100 signatures.

According to reports, as of Monday, 8 December 2025, the petition addressed to the US Embassy surpassed 3,100 signatures.

Professor Stephen Kweku Asare, in his petition, urged the US Embassy in Accra to cooperate with the Government of Ghana to facilitate the extradition of Ken Ofori-Atta.

He called on the US Embassy to collaborate with the US and the Ghanaian government to expedite the processing of any formal extradition request.

Portions of the petition read, “We, concerned citizens of Ghana, respectfully call on the United States Embassy in Accra to cooperate with Ghanaian authorities to facilitate the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who has now been formally charged with multiple financial and economic crimes.

Mr Ofori-Atta is currently outside Ghana. His absence is delaying the criminal process and undermining our country’s fight against corruption and economic wrongdoing”.

“Ghana and the United States share a strong partnership rooted in democracy, transparency, and accountability. When a public official has been charged, the law must take its course, without fear, favour, or political shielding”, the petition added.

It will be recalled that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Kissi Agyebeng, declared Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive for failing to appear for interrogation into corruption-related investigations.

Ken Ofori Atta has been accused of causing financial loss to the state in several dealings, including the construction of the famous National Cathedral and Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA’s) – Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd (SML), Termination of a contract between the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited and Beijing Xiao Cheng Technology (BXC) for the Distribution and Ambulance Procurement: A Ministry of Health contract with Service Ghana Auto Group Limited.
